No reservations. $14 per vehicle/per night in addition to entry fees. Primitive camping is on a sandy beach or in dunes. No designated campsites. Open fires permitted, must be within four foot squared area. Lone Rock Beach Primitive Camping Area — Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

The dispersed layout is awesome, but has almost zero cover for any tent campers. Especially if youd like to camp next to the lake, which is the basic appeal of being there. Also beware of sand. Saw a car up past the door in a dune, stuck. 

The views are great, the water is extremely nice, and the vault toilets are good and plenty in number. 

The weather can be unpredictable. Things were going great until 40+ mph winds came through in a snap and lasted all night. We were blasted by sand and wind, then came rain for hours, and temps dropping fast and into low 40's. Piles of sand in the tent, sleeping bags, and every orafice of our bodies. It was brutal. Sunshade poles were bent into multiple U shapes and ruined. Tent held strong, but we did not. Saw clouds building on horizon the same as it had the day prior and we decided to make our escape quickly. The weather that day had a 20% chance of precipitation and no mention of high winds. So again, beware.

If perfect weather, things could have be totally different- But really when is that ever the case? 

All Fun and Games until..

We went again this year in May and found the season to b e perfect. Weather was amazing, and it was not yet overrun by tourists so we were able to comfortably stay on the beach. We visit 5 or 6 times a year and will be back again next month. Hard to stay away!

Always a good time

I started out on a roadtrip from Phoenix alone and didn't know where I'd sleep for the first night. As the sunset approached I stopped at a few viewpoints at Lake Powell to take photos and happened on this spot. It was so fun to drive on the sand right up to the beach and water. It looked like most normal cars did fine to get down - I was thankful for all wheel drive though. I didn't see water facilities but there were bathroom shelters up the beach a ways. Overall it was very cozy, gorgeous sunset and sunrise and everyone nearby was friendly! I wish I had a kayak or paddleboard with me. Enjoy!

Safe and peaceful!

Stayed 3 nights in a row in Mid October 2016. Really enjoyed the beach camping. With incredibly easy access to Wahweap bay.  The moon was so bright at night that we didn't even need headlamps to go to the toilets. $14 per night(need a one time $35 pass to Glen Canyon National Recreation area.) It was not too crowded in Mid October.  On Saturday and Sunday there was a line of RVs and Campers along the waters edge. And then a few of us forced to camp back from the water(200ft) near the dunes(closer to the toilets). And then on Sunday night most of the crowd cleared out and we move our tent up to the "front row".

(The cons list looks longer, but the pros far outweigh)
Pros: right on the shore of Wahweap bay. Amazing views day and night. Cheap fees considering the fancy microflush toilets. 

Cons: Camping on a sandy beach can cause some issues, especially if winds pick up. I assume it's really crowded in the summer. This part of lake Powell features mostly grey colored rocks, if you are hopin to see the signature red rocks of lake Powell, you will likely need a powered watercraft. (We spent an entire afternoon paddleboarding, and couldn't even reach the far end of Wahweap bay.

Spectacular view, easily accessible

I thought this campground was a pretty unique find. The closest town is Page, AZ. There's a pretty cool dam nearby, there's Horsehoe Bend and I hear Lake Powell itself is great for Kayaking, but we didn't get to enjoy that. This campsite is interesting because there are no designated spots. You just drive out anywhere on the beach and camp. Plenty of toilets scattered around the beach, no showers. We came on a windy night and tent camped, so we woke up covered in sand. Other downside is that apparently it is a spot for locals to come party. Be careful where you park. The sand moves and you can get stuck. But it was pretty amazing sleeping right on a beach.

Lone Rock Beach

This place is pretty sweet if you're visiting Lake Powell. The camping is primitive so just drive onto the beach and park and set up where you want. The RVs can be pretty loud and block the view of the lake which sucks. The wind is pretty strong and you will get sand in your tent!

Windy primitive beach camping

A great place to have a combination of playground fun. Offroad trails, beach, good hot weather for swimming, jet ski's and boating if you got em. Get a tan, and go explore, so many options here. Although, well known and pretty crowded. We hadfo squeeze in between a couple of bice rv campers who accepted us. Not the most comfy campsite unless you RV.

Great offroad beach swim park

Arrived late on Sunday night of a holiday weekend - we were able to find a spot right on the shore. The beach was packed but no one minded us squeezing into a spot. Be prepared for it to be loud, bring your own toilet paper, and don't push it if you don't have a AWD car. Very very beautiful worth the noise. $14

Oh what a beautiful sunrise 

We camped on the beach here for cheap. There are flush toilets every so many feet high up on the beach which is nice. I would bring plenty of water - I can't remember if the water from the sinks was potable. There was a nice guy helping to dig people's cars out of the sand - be careful where you drive, and whatever you do, if you get stuck do not drive SLOW afterward! Drive fast until you are on more solid ground. We saw one guy get stuck over and over and over again because he kept letting his car slow and lose momentum. We got stuck once ourselves. The great thing is that you are very visible and there were a few people willing to help us. What we ended up doing was parking far from the beach and just carrying our camp gear closer to the shore.

Lake Powell is AWESOME. The water is the perfect temperature, the sand is wonderful and not gravelly. This is a perfect place to just swim and float all day long, maybe with a couple beers and definitely LOTS of sunscreen.

This may have been a fluke or rare thing, but the wind was high the day we were here. Our tent quickly blew up from the ground and onto another family's tent! We re-staked it and weighed it down with our gear and that worked. It did storm on us overnight. Our tent was filled with sand the next morning and we were soaked and had to hold our tent up because of the wind and rain. However, it was still one of my favorite camping experiences of our two-week, 7 national parks trip!

Beautiful and fun place to spend a day or two!

We arrived to the beach after dark in our campervan in March. There was no tenant to collect payment, but rather a payment box which we used. The beach itself was empty and but three RV's parked back on land. The location of where to park for the night was difficult to figure out as there are minimal signs, poor night lighting, and no one to ask. If it were busier I'm sure we would've been able to figure it out a bit easier. We finally decided to park near the RV's as I didn't want to get stuck on the beach in the van. I woke up the next morning before dawn and the sunrise over Lake Powell was beautiful. There were no cars on the beach, nothing to distract from my desolation. The only draw back were the bathrooms. At that time of year there are about 10 or so non-flush toilets along the beach, but the majority were locked, so I had to walk the length of the beach to locate one that was open. It was fine, for a toilet. I've heard it's super crowded in the warmer months, but I'd highly recommend going here for an early spring night to bask in the quiet. And for 10$, what a steal.

I highly recommend 4 wheel drive- or you WILL GET STUCK IN SAND!

Thunderstoms are common every afternoon In late summer. Fun to watch, but get off the water when uoI see them rolling In. 


Beach Party

You can’t get much closer to the lake then this...the sand road aling rhe top of the beach is well worn, so you won’t sink. There are pit toilets scattered along the top of the road. There are not designated spots, it is kind of a free for all, where you are going to park your RV, or put your tents. There is no water, or electricity, so you need to bring your own (I wouldn’t drink the lake water :)).

Great sunsets

Stayed here twice. First time was great but windy. It's the beach....there's lots of sand! On our second time, we had a nice spot until someone pitched tents practically on top of us. It didn't leave much personal space for us. It's uncomfortable when someone starts a fire within 10 feet of you.

Cold, outdoor showers were fine in the hot weather. You can get yourself pretty clean. Flush toilets and regular sinks were up top by those showers. And there is potable water at a dump station. Porta potty style toilets and urinals were on the beach, and there were plenty of them.

Inexpensive - $14, $7 with NPS Senior Pass.

Beautiful location but look out if it's windy

It’s as primitive as a campground could get at Lake Powell - pick a spot any where along the shore and it is yours (for $14 a night!) it does get very windy, so prepare or park your vehicles accordingly to help protect your site from the wind! We ended up just moving about 200 yards back by some trees. Sand does get every where, but it is the most beautiful place to camp. Water access right outside your door! Be careful driving through the sand - be wise! There are also toilets about 200 feet away from most of the camping areas.

Beach camping on the lake!

You can pay $14 to camp right on the shore! Be careful though, be smart when driving through the sand or park and walk your stuff in as close as you want. The wind can be a problem so be prepared and have the right gear. There are bathroom stalls within 200 feet from the beach lined up all along the campground. There are some spots that have rock circles for fires already so try to use those if ya can! Beautiful view and water access.

Primitive beach camping on the lake!

Really beautiful beach spot and nice to swim in and relax, but come prepared with shade and a table to cook on. If you plan to come here I think an RV is the best choice because I came with a tent and we left for a few hours and came back and an RV ran over it, so we had to set up somewhere else. It is also really windy, so come prepared for that as well. My overall tent camping experience was not great, but the spot is beautiful. Do not think it is worth the $15 per night. 

Beautiful beach spot - EXTREMELY WINDY 

This campground is very cool! Great view of Lake Powell and surrounding rock formations. Great for swimming, camping, pets, etc. No fire rings, but bathrooms are available. 4WD not necessary for some parts, but definitely necessary if wanting to drive down the beach through the sand. Tent and RV camping allowed, no reservations. Must pay the Glenn Canyon entrance fee unless you have a National Park Pass. Camping is an additional $14/night fee.

Waterfront beach camping 

Beautiful and open campground smack dab in some of the most beautiful land this country has to offer!

YES, this area can get packed. lots of people/rvs/whole 9...BUT you can kinda camp where you want, so finding some space in this campground, even when it’s packed, wasn’t an issue for us. 

Most of the lake front camping was taken, so my Lady and I set up camp a good distance away from lake. We could barely hear the people in the distance, and the stars at night were amazing!

we were not bothered by anyone, even with it being so crowded. 

No shaded areas, so bring sun screen and shade set ups if you visit when it’s warm out. 

Busy but easy to escape

My wife and I took a random trip through Arizona on the way to The North Rim Grand Canyon! We happened upon Page Arizona, and found that we are the only ones whom didn't already know about the area. In other words there were NO spots to camp left near the town. but we found this Dispersed camping just a few miles into Utah. We were a bit worried about not having a park host, or really any direction to where to park and set up. Although we did love the no Fee program!

turns out you park wherever you want! we found one of the few trees and parked near it, it was late and dark so we set up camp and slept, we woke up to one of the best views we have had yet, "Lone Rock" proudly stood in our mist like a loan Guard. with a beautiful sunrise we ate as we watch jet skis and water skis jet by.

We were only a few minutes outside of page and found our camp safe and sound when we returned from a full day on the lake kayaking!!! a short drive to "Horseshoe Bend", the worlds most photographed landscape! and of course Antelope Canyon.

Lot to do!

This campground is part of Glen Canyon National rec area. It costs $14 (even in the off-season, apparently). Not sure it's worth that given that in the winter all but a few of the vault toilets are closed, but it's a nice, open space with a pleasant view of the lake and "Lone Rock". You can build a campfire right on the beach, and while we were here (early March) it was very uncrowded--just a few other campers spread out in the vast, open space. We have a 2wd and it did fine on the sand, just don't go careening off the edge of the drop-off into deeper sand unless you are confident your vehicle can handle it. Only about 20 minutes from Page, so convenient if you're looking to stay in the area for a day or so.

Big, open lakefront space with nothing but the basics

The campground is right on lake powell and there are no reservations so be sure to get there early for a good spot. Camping is in the sand, but it is pretty hard, if you are planning on sleeping on the ground. The bathrooms are actually pretty nice and well maintained for a primitive site

Awesome primitive camping

We spent the day touring Antelope Canyon nearby and had a long drive ahead the next day. We had no plans to stay anywhere, so we pulled down to Lone Rock Beach campground.

There are lots of dispersed camp spots in the dunes and bushes along the road down to the water. There is also a typical state park type bathroom. You can drive along the beach in the hard pack and camp wherever you want though. We drove the van right up to the water. There were a couple strange toilets, think double metal portable units with a large base and stairs. If you were disabled, it would be wise to camp closer to the the bathroom building. These were a steep couple steps up, and no light. Bring your own.

It was raining when we arrived. The next morning dawned beautiful and warm so we were able to appreciate the splendor of the canyon. I hear summer and weekends can be a crazy paty zone, but here in April, it was quiet and nice.

Right on the Water

Dispersed camping along the beach of Lake Powell. Price when the entry is manned is $44 ($30 day use plus $14 camping fee). Camp anywhere along the beach, but be cautious of getting stuck in the sand, and bring some recovery gear. Flushable pit toilets are available, but you may end up pretty far away from them. Watch out for wind storms, as they come up quickly and will turn tents, awnings, and sun shades into pretzles. 

Best beach camping

We lucked out with perfect weather! Drove in on my Mazda CX-5 got stuck more toward the far end while trying to scope out the whole area. I was able to easily dig out some sand and head back to the middle area. Parked the car about 120 feet from the water. Without issue. Unfortunately we were side by side with other campers but all friendly and no issues. Overnight camping permits cost $14 +. $30 entrance fee BUT if you have your national park annual pass entry is free:) 15 minutes from horseshoe  bend and 1 hour from
Zion. Gas up before heading to Zion when heading west the nearest gas station is 50 miles away! This beach is also doggie friendly 

One for the books! 

Sandy Beach dry camping at its best. Great price and Beautiful views. Can't get much closer to the water. National Park pass works here. Fifteen minutes from lake Powell park.

Ultimately Beautiful

I love primitive camping here. You camp right on the beach with the most gorgeous views. You’re super close to tons of amazing places like Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. There are lots of RVs and you don’t have privacy, but it’s worth it. Best to have 4WD.

Amazing sunsets

This place was one of our favorites we stayed at while dispersed camping. We paid on Saturday June 12th $14, and our pass was good until the 19th. The following 2 nights there was no one at the booth so I think they may only charge on Saturday. Saturday night was PACKED so we couldn’t get a waterfront spot, but Sunday night we probably got the best spot on the whole beach. We parked on the far left right at the little cliff directly across from the Lone Rock. Since there was no one to our left we boxed ourselves in and it felt pretty private for how busy it was. The cons of this place is how busy it is and how many RVs there are with their god forsaken generators. Also that there were a few giant Trump 2020 flags which, I guess is petty of me to care but it’s annoying to see when you’re just trying to camp and get away from the world. pros are the waterfront views and there are bathrooms and rinse showers at the top of the hill where you enter. Last pro is that if you have an off road vehicle and keep driving over to the right you can avoid most of the RVs and generators. Which leads me to probably the most important point: DO NOT drive on the deep sand without an off road vehicle. We saw SOOO many little cars stuck in the sand. Some had to get towed by a tow truck. Others were lucky enough it seemed that some big trucks on the beach were nice enough to help them. We even saw one giant RV with a dude that drove all the way down to the right of the beach into the deep sand and had to have TWO big ass trucks pull him out. Just... don’t be that dude. 

Amazing views, lots of RVs and generators

Pros:
 - Beach camping on beautiful Lake Powel
- Close to numerous hikes and incredible destinations
 - Very fair price
 - Vaulted toilets, trash dumpster, dump
 - The lake is clear, cool and refreshing.

Cons:
 - You will share the beach with 200 other campers.  Weekends see very heavy use with RV’s and tents packed like sardines and stacked 2,3, and even 4 deep along the shore; weekdays offer a much more private experience but you will not have the beach to yourself, you will have neighbors.  If you like privacy you can find it as long as you’re willing to find a site much further back from the water.
 - Do not attempt without 4 wheel drive, we’ve saw a dozen RV’s and cars stuck in the sand (the worst areas are the “roads” to/from the beach.
 - If it’s windy you are pretty much stuck inside as the blowing sand makes it unbearable.  The lake really isn’t any better as the sand blows there as well.  In almost a week we’ve been able to put our awning out twice for about an hour.
- You will spend a lot of time cleaning sand out of your RV.


It is a unique experience and I would do it again, but know what you’re getting into.  If serine and private are your thing I’d find another place, if you’re ok with the con’s you’ll have a great time.  

Tenting can be great but we saw several tents blown over as well as several shade tents.  Bring bags to fill with sand to use as anchors.

If you go, pause near the showers to watch others go up and down to find the best path.  There is deep sand and big bumps.

Perception vs reality

Stayed 7/19/20 - $14/night

  

We setup just off the "main drive", between two bathrooms (12 &amp;13) and next to a brush area.

  

BE CAREFUL IN THE SAND. It is easy to get your car stuck. There is a gravel path down the center, but non-4WD vehicles should turn LEFT on their way out, and not continue straight, beyond the gravel.

  

We had a sedan, so we took extra caution and setup camp further from the water.(Also because we didn’t want to be near people due to COVID). There was plenty of room to spread out.

  

We wanted to kayak Lake Powell, so afternoon setting up, it was easy to walk the kayaks down to the water and put in right on the beach. You might want to wear some type of shoes, the sand is HOT!! My friend burnt his foot and it blistered immediately. Although the views are absolutely beautiful, this campground is loud and noisy all night. Lots of ATVs, dirt bikes, etc. Cool experience, would have enjoyed it more being closer to the water and not during COVID.

Beautiful views & experience - Noisy

We ended up leaving this spot, mostly because FWD is needed, but also because it was pretty packed with RVs, trucks, dirt bikes... mostly not a quiet place. 

Though if that is what you are after, there were lots of trails for ATVs and such. Camping right on the beach for $14 isn’t too bad.

Crowded place, but beautiful 

This is such a beautiful and unique camping experience, being ON the beach. Lone Rock (and Wahweap Bay in general) is absolutely breathtaking, plus waking up and falling asleep to the sounds of the waves is so peaceful. However, BEWARE OF THE WIND!!! We were sleeping in a tent and oh. my. gosh. we had to chase it down the beach twice during a huge wind storm and then weigh it down with all of our belongings. The wind settled down a little before bed but we soon woke up to such intense winds that the tent was leaning so much that the top was touching us! Not to mention all of the sand that was flying in, coating everything in the tent (we had to sleep completely wrapped in our sleeping bags so sand wouldn’t get in our eyes) We laughed through the pain the rest of the night and then took this pic in the morning for memories. Would still go back because of the sheer beauty... but only in a camper/ RV 😂😅. 

Beautiful Sand Storm 

As someone who’s been camping my entire life, my two favorite terrains are the desert and the beach. At Lone Rock you get the best of both. With the lake a LITERAL stone’s throw away, you can hop in and cool off at any point throughout the day or night. The dry desert air keeps bugs to a minimum, which allowed my partner and I to sleep open-air and without a rain fly- which was awesome considering the stars out here are an absolute spectacle. 

There’s a gas station and convenience store 5 minutes down the road with urinal games for the guys (pretty cool) and an awesome custard shop if you decide to splurge on some frozen goodness.

The last half mile or so is a fun and sketchy road road, so definitely keep speed if you don’t have all-wheel or 4-wheel drive capabilities... the fine sand of the road will get you stuck otherwise.

Only 2 issues I had:

1. As a tent-camper getting stakes into the ground was DAMN NEAR IMPOSSIBLE. Hard-packed clay lies about an inch under the sandy surface, so if you’re using thin stakes or a rubber mallet- forget it. I’d suggest picking up some sandbags or even a couple dumbbells to hold the corners of your tent down. 

2. This is a well-known site, and very crowded. If you’re lucky enough to get a good spot early on Thursday or Friday morning, expect to have neighbors within 6 feet of you by day’s end. People pack in TIGHT so either bring a backpack and hike down the beach a little ways, or leave the social anxiety at the highway- you will have neighbors.

All-in-all I loved the campsite. The facilities were clean and well stocked, we had no issues with bugs or insects, and having the beach and desert feel was an awesome experience. 

Best of both worlds

Best beach camping EVER!!!!!  There is a price but it is only 14$/night.  We had a tent and 2wd. We made it down the beach where there was way lass RVs and campers.  A little noisy at night with everyone’s toys but other than that is what absolutely fantastic. Super easy to find and super fun driving on the beach. Would recommend this spot to anyone. Just awesome 

Beach camping 

Beach, lake, views, good vibes. Pretty hard not to love the camping experience at Lone Rock. With the exception of some crazy wind that came through, everything was great here. Vault toilets if you need them, rv dump and water spigot available at the top of the hill. Plenty of dumpsters to take care of trash. Everyone was friendly and helpful! Saw strangers helping strangers when some would get stuck in the sand.

Would definitely scout out an area and how you want to approach it before barreling in. Might save you a headache or two. 

Hard not to love

I will say having just came from Zion that my camping expectations were set high! Firstly I’d like to mention how a lot of these reviews say how deep the sand is and how it could be super sketchy for your car so we were nervous at first, but still went for it. Yes the sand is deep in some areas but there’s also plenty of pretty well compacted roads where you go can to avoid the deep sandy areas. And once you get to the beach-y part it’s basically clear as day so I don’t think you should worry at all unless you’re in a two door Honda Civic (I’d probably opt out). But besides that it does suck that everyone stays right in front of the water, it would obviously be great for those who weren’t set up right at the water to catch that view. I feel like if there was some rules about the beach area being more of for people to walk along side the shore to to hang out it could be much more enjoyable. Where we stayed there was lots of thorns from the little weeds that grew from the sand so that wasn’t great at all, but it was manageable. There was no cell phone reception what so ever for us (t-Mobile) here and we found that strange. There was plenty of restrooms to choose from but they were a good distance from where we set up (also not the cleanest). Plenty of trash cans to dump your garbage before heading out once again. We’d love to come back again in the future though, maybe get a spot up by the water!

Beautiful place to visit but..

Overall,  it was awesome, the views were amazing and it was a nice place to stay Sunday - Friday before the crowds rolled in.

Really great spot to be close to the water

It's hard to beat the view of the wide open "campground" that is the beach at Lone Rock. Be prepared for the crowds, fifth wheels and ATVs and generators. If you can accept that going in, this is a great space to stargaze, paddle board and enjoy a drink in the evening. Pit toilet bathrooms are available within 300 yards of the shoreline. I think they have flush toilets further up the hill. Free RV dump and potable water available. Also note, wind can really kick up the sand, which absolutely nobody loves. And that sends a lot of garbage flying. Batten down them thar hatches.

Leave no trace.

Camping on La Playa

Arrived on a Thursday evening and stayed for 1 night. It’s $14/night or $7 senior/access pass fee. I had the access pass but no one at the stand to confirm so I paid full price. So many places to park along the river or off the river. Looks like over 150 campers could fit here. Only had around 30 for the night I stayed. A few small fire rings throughout the land and SEVERAL vault toilets, which were clean. I think I counted 20? Good AT&amp;T service and beautiful sunsets. About 20 minutes from horseshoe bend or 10 minutes from Page, AZ to stock up on groceries and gas. What a nice find!

So so perfect 

We chose this site for the rare opportunity to camp right by the shores of Lake Powell. This is a large dispersed camping area managed by the national park system within the Glen Canyon national recreation area. There is a ton of space for vans RVs, vans, tents and many Outhouses  spread out further back from the shore. Wide open beach to walk, hang out and have a campfire. Decent AT&amp;T and Verizon cell reception. Stunning views at sunset and sunrise. Fantastic find! 

Fantastic site on the shores of Lake Powell

We camped here Feb 4-7 2021 and there were about 4-5 other campers on over a mile of beach. Our nearest neighbor was about 100 yards away. During the day on the weekend more people showed up for day use but there weren't ever more than 30 people on a HUGE stretch of beach. The beach can accommodate any size rig easily. The most important thing to remember when getting there.... SCOUT AHEAD! Either on foot or with a 4x4 so you can plan your route out to the beach. One wrong turn and you will be up to your frame in soft sand. But there are plenty of hard pack routes to get out there as long as you scout ahead. I saw a 45ft class A, I have a 35ft toy hauler, people were driving 2 wheel drive cars out there for the day. I did pull a Mini Cooper out that was stuck up to the frame and I almost got stuck with my 4x4 Ram truck. So planning is key. This is going to be one of my go to winter camping spots. I don't like camping with lots of people so Feb was perfect. Temps were high 50s during the day and lows were high 20s. Never more than a breeze and not a single bug to be found. Summer is a whole different story, I'm sure. Lake Powell is notorious for wind/sand storms in the afternoons but we didn't have any of that. The potable water fill, flush toilets, and showers were closed for the season but the vault toilets on the beach were open. The Pilot gas station that is a 3 minute drive has a dump station and potable water that worked out perfectly. I can't recommend this spot enough! YouTube video link: https://youtu.be/6hqRPstunaM

One of my favorite winter boondocking spots!

Pretty windy this time of year, so not ideal for a tent. Found a good spot a little ways from the water. Just passing through so it worked.

Windy with a view

My boyfriend and I are on a several month long road trip. This has been our favorite place we’ve stayed at so far in the whole 11 weeks on the road and out of all of our other road trips we’ve done separately. The bathrooms are a little far and there weren’t showers that I was aware of but the views are gorgeous. The beach was warm even in the beginning of April. You can kayak or boat in the lake around the Lone Rock. The biggest problem is people getting their trucks and campers stuck around you all day and night. If you don’t watch for soft sand or go fast enough/are too heavy definitely think about staying closer to the bathrooms or up the hill to towards the road on the paved parts with an RV. We had one guy get his truck and trailer with wife and 3-4 young kids stuck 15 feet away from our tent and said well I guess we will just wait until morning without making any effort to get unstuck. Luckily with help of many friendly neighbor campers and experienced off-roaders they helped get them out. All in all we ended up staying an extra day because the sand was so soft, the weather was perfect and were excited to get some tanning and beach sports in while sleeping next to our car dozens of feet away from others.

You will not be alone at this beach but we thought it was well worth it! Visiting in October it was still plenty warm to swim during the day. Be careful of where you drive/park if you are not used to sand. We were camping out of a minivan and parked farther back from the water to make ensure we wouldnt get stuck. We saw multiple people have trouble while we were there but there were some regulars who always helped get them out of the sand. It was windy at night but nothing we couldnt sleep through. 

Beach camping

If you like to hear the sound of OHVs and cheap gas gennys..this place is for you (it is designated as a OHV area, unfortunately I did not know beforehand).  Bring your sand goggles. The big RV herd lines up on the edge.  Windy sandstorms and zero shade. This is the real "Planet of the Apes in RVs"....

Gigantic beach clusterfrak

We arrived after dark in a 2wd Campervan. There are roads (trails) through the sand to the beach. Some are more solid than others we almost got stuck. Be careful in your selection on which path to take. The main restrooms at the entrance are nice and clean with sinks and flushable toilets. There are around 10 other primitive restrooms dispersed closer to the beach. It was extremely windy when we arrived and was almost unbearable to be outside. If the conditions are windy be prepared to be sandblasted! I suggest finding a spot next to some brush to cut down on the sand. Or the Wahweap campground is paved so less sand.

Such a nice camping area! Super easy to get stuck in the sand here so be prepared and walk your route before you try and drive it. Super fun for big groups and weekend trips! 


Lake Powell Camping

I really liked camping here and I felt safe being alone. There were rangers patrolling and people were overall respectful. If you don’t have 4wd I’d stick to the upper loop- go left right after the bathroom facilities. If you have 4wd and want to camp on the water, head straight after the bathrooms and go left at the fork. Stick to the established roads and when you’re going uphill do not stop or slow down. I have 4wd and did just fine. Would def stay here again:) enjoy!

Best spot in Page

There's boondocking, and then there's National Recreation Area boondocking near Lone Rock along the shores of Lake Powell. If you want an introduction to this kind of camping, this is a good place to start --  call it "boondocking light." With freshwater available, a sanitary dump and even flush toilets all within walking distance of the dispersed camping area, you can pick and choose your level of comfort. 

  

You can also choose how far out onto the sand you want to go. This area could easily hold thousands of campers, tents, RVs and Vans, like some camping festival rock concert, where the main act is the daily sunrise as it hits the massive tower of sandstone lending its name to the area.  So, you won’t need to worry about making a reservation even during the most popular times of year. 

  

Sand is an issue here, in your hair, in your food, in your trailer, and under your tires. Once you leave the pavement, it's best to stick to the tire tracks of the many vehicles who came before. There are places where the sand gets pretty deep and soft and we saw just a handful of vehicles requiring a push, tow, and otherwise shoved pack to the hardpack. Most of those however, we either pulling a big rig or only had 2WD. Fortunately, there are more than enough 4WD vehicles driven by enthusiastically prepared people just itching for the chance to use their new tow strap. Have a six-pack at the ready and be willing to make new friends. 

  

The main toilet block is located above the main camping area with running water and flush toilets, but no showers. The outside swimming showers and drinking fountains were closed as a result of COVID-19 and water restrictions (it's been a major drought y'all.) Additionally, many portable vault toilets can be found scattered throughout the camping area minimizing the walk to the toilet. 

  

The local area is simply brimming with outdoor adventure activities from hiking, and paddling to canyoneering and motorized off-road recreation. The destinations are picture-worthy from mountain summits to slot-canyons and horseshoe bends in the Colorado River. The nearest town with all the usual services is Page, AZ, just across the state border. There you will be able to stock up on groceries, fuel and anything else you might have in mind.

Sand & Sunrises

Amazing spot on lake Powell! Stay here one night. For a paddle board trip with friends, if you’re wanting privacy this isn’t the site for you as there are LOTs of people along the waters edge. The mid afternoon wind made the sand blow pretty bad so I’d set up early or after the wind time. There were nearby bathrooms with outdoor showers that was amazing !! High clearance vehicle  is a must in my opinion as with the blowing sand it could be possible to get stuck.

It’s not the location that got the 3 stars it’s the crowded beach. We got here on a Thursday evening hoping to find a semi secluded campsite near the water. This campground was literally so crowded.. on a Thursday? Our neighbors started blasting their music as soon as I laid down for bed. From what Im guessing there wasn’t any sort of quiet time. There were lots of side by sides trying to show off with their loud music. This place would’ve been great if we caught it on a night with less of a crowd. The view was really great and sunrise was awesome. 

Not a huge fan

If you've ever been to the Wahweap side of Lake Powell, you've likely heard of or seen photos of Lone Rock Beach. It's a fantastic dispersed camping area and you can drive up and sleep right along the shore of the lake. 

  

The sand gets deep as you get closer to the water line, so be sure to have a 4WD vehicle or else you'll want to park and walk down to pitch a tent closer to the water. There are also lots of camping options further up the beach, nearer to the restrooms with firmer ground for those that aren't prepared to drive in deep sand. It's also worth mentioning that the water levels are such that you cannot currently boat to Lone Rock (as of May 2022). 

  

Do not expect to find a remote, empty beach here. There will likely be lots of other people dispersed along the beach, especially in the high season. You can certainly find your own private pocket of sand, but along the water it gets understandably more crowded. 

  

Also, it gets very windy in the spring/early summer months so if you're in a tent, this could be a frustrating experience. All those things said, this is a very cool place to camp at Lake Powell. The views are beautiful and the desert surrounding the lake never gets boring. There are lots of sightseeing and hiking opportunities nearby and the NPS keeps the facilities clean. There are a handful of restrooms available as well as an RV dump station and potable water (in-season). There is also a Pilot gas station a short drive away for cold drinks and snacks in a pinch.

  

You will need to pay the NPS park entry fees in addition to the $14 per night camping fee. In the off-season, this is done at the pay station upon entering. 

  

If you're there on an extremely windy day, you may want to rethink taking a walk along the beach unless you're hoping for a full body exfoliation (speaking from experience).

Awesome spot with a view 

This campground can accommodate 5000 units as per rec.gov!  Looks like it.  However, low water levels has brought the number of campers way down.  There are less than 30 camping units spread out over several acres during our mid week stay.  A nice experience!

With the deep sand here, it’s east to get stuck if you aren’t careful. Watched one person get stuck out first night here. With how low the water is, it’s kind of like camping at sand dunes

Don’t get stuck!

Stopped here going through the area and stayed an extra night! Not our usual scene, but in November it was relatively peaceful and lovely! LOVED watching the color of Lake Powell change through the day. The sunrises were magical! A few motorcycles and atv’s buzzing around through the day but people were respectful. A bit scary at how the water level has receded since the google earth image!

We paid 7.00/night with the National Park Access Pass.  Had good Verizon, and thus a wifi hotspot too.

Oh my gosh, how fun was this!

We have camped here many times over the years and LOVE it!  I will say it was a lot more scenic when the water was higher but even with no water it is beautiful.  You want to avoid going too far down the beach because the sand gets very soft and deep and you will get stuck.  There are tons of other places to set up your camp with no worries.  No hookups but they do have a dump station and vault toilets.  In the summer they also have cold outdoor showers.  It does get very crowded and busy in the summer (well it used to when there was water in the lake) so we prefer to camp in the "off" season.  It also gets very, very hot in the summer.  Winter is somewhat mild and could be a very good time to camp.  The last time I camped here was in February and it was perfect.  You can also bring your ATV and have loads of fun riding on trails and up on the hill!  The town of Page, AZ. is close by if you need or want to go shopping.   This campground is also a good location for your home base.  There are many awesome places to explore in the area.

Primitive And Awesome!

We have a 40’ Fifth Wheel and were worried about getting stuck in the sand. We walked the area and decided on a spot a little way back from the Sandy beach area. Since it was March, there were not too many people camped out there. It was beautiful and quiet. We had great cell service with ATT, and there were no amenities. The Dump Station was closed at Lone Rock, but there are many other dump stations and potable water in Page. Lots of things to do and see in the area. We stayed 8 days and loved our time there.

We Loved It At Lone Rock

Not sure if it’s the time of year or what but there were no entry or camping fees! 

This place is beautiful with tons of room for campers, trailers, tents, ORV’s, and you name it! Driving on the sand was a breeze and only had to use 4WD getting down to the water. Lots of clean private vault toilets. 

We scoped it out during the day and then arrived to set up at night- highly recommend getting to your spot before dark because it was pitch black out there. 

A bit windy at night but quiet and peaceful! Would definitely return!

Beach Camping 

Great spot! Absolutely more than we expected. We were looking between here and Wahweap camp grounds and this was way better with easier access to the water. Wahweap actually wasn’t offering beach access at the time. All there swimming areas were closed. Definitely recommend! 

Hidden gem

 The water level was finally up to lone rock!! We pleasantly camped right next to the lake, but the water level was rising so quickly that By morning we had to move tent and campfire back a bit. Through the night one of our jet skis has floated all the way to the other side of lone rock and was beached up on the sand.  Was able to go completely around with pontoon boat and jet skis! The garbage situation wasn’t very pleasant though.

Bathrooms decently close to shoreline, park not actively gated at the moment and the showers and main bathrooms are closed but you can travel to the Wahweap campground for cheap showers if needed! 

Deep sand makes high clearance and four wheel drive desired, but there were many RVs and campers that made it through the sand to the shore (whether or not they’ll be able to leave, I cannot say).
