All of the park’s 106 family campsites have a grill and picnic table and are located near a *bathhouse with hot showers. A dump station is located at the campground check-in. The campground has 86 RV sites with water and electric hookups and 20 tent sites, each with water. The tent camping area does not have electric hookups. There are no sewer hookups in the campground.

*Off-Season Bathhouse Closures: November 1st through April 15th
Bathhouses 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 will be closed during the off-season. The 94 Bath House located in the lower area around sites 10 and 11 will be the only bathhouse open during the off-season.

Dumpsters and recycling bins are also located at the campground check-in. Wi-Fi is available throughout the campground. A cell phone booster is also located at the campground check-in that Verizon Wireless customers may use to assist with cell service.

Four group sites, which will accommodate approximately 25 people each, are available. The group sites are located just south of the individual tent-only camping area of the Roan Mountain State Park campground. They have large gravel tent pads, picnic tables, fire rings, grills, and water spigots at each site. There is no electricity, camping is only allowed on the gravel pads (not in the surrounding grassy areas), and it is approximately a 1/4 mile walk to the nearest bathrooms/shower houses. These four sites may be reserved up to 12 months in advance.

Located on TN Hwy 143 at the base of the majestic 6,285 Roan Mountain, Roan Mountain State Park encompasses more than 2,000 acres dominated by rich hardwood forest along rugged ridges. The cool, clear Doe River winds its way through the center of the park and supports a healthy population of trout. Wildflowers and wildlife inhabit the hollows and ridges of the Roan foothills in abundance.

There are 30 comfortable cabins, as well as RV and tent camping at the 106-site campgrounds. Each cabin has a front porch with rocking chairs, fully outfitted kitchen, full bath, wood burning stove and gas/electric heat. Each campsite has a grill and picnic table and is located near a bathhouse with hot showers.

Visitors can hike along the creeks and ridges, tour the century-old Miller Farmstead or enjoy cross-country skiing in the winter months. There are approximately 12 miles of hiking trails and 2.25 miles of mountain bike trails. Difficulty levels range from easy to strenuous.

Roan Mountain State Park Campground

Booked a tent campground right by the creek and couldnt have picked a better location. Quiet time starts at 9 and everyone there was very respectful of this. Enjoyed the sounds of the water running down the creek all night. Staff there was helpful and friendly. They recommended big hump hike right beside the mountain.  

Great getaway

**Nice big park with a lot for everyone to enjoy, from the pool and fishing to mountain biking. Amazing plants and view everywhere. Tons of hiking trails (including the Appalachian Trail), our favorites were the grassy hills with 360 views of rolling mountains.**

**Camping options include RV, tent, and cabin. Sites are lightly wooded.**

**Yay: There are events every month. Wonderful Appalachian feeling to this whole area.**

**Nay: Parts of it feel a little too much like a resort, but it is quite well maintained and bustling rather than over crowded.**

**Surprise: The rhododendron gardens are incredible, surreal. The historic farm is also great, as is the adorable town of Roan Mountain.**

Near the TN-NC border 

Stayed three nights with two kids. Great tent pads with running water located right next to every pad. Plenty of hiking and biking to do. Pool and playground for the kids to enjoy, a great place for easy camping.

Great for a family!

Wind your way up the mountains to this sweet state park! There was only one other couple camping when we arrived but I feel like this place wouldn't feel busy even if it was thanks to all the trees! We also felt super safe thanks to the park ranger driving around on patrol, he drove by a few times making sure everything was all set. Much appreciated by two females camping in the off season!

The campsites have nice gravel areas AND flat dirt spots for tents. It was nice to not have to pitch the tent right on top of gravel for a change. Our site was quite large and had a picnic table and a natural rock fire pit that was free of debris and trash. There was plenty of space for the hounds to roam on their long leads. A water spigot was just a short walk away. Restrooms were nice and warm, appreciated thanks to cold fall temps.

The site we stayed in had a little paved bump out for parking. Trash receptacles were directly across from our site as well.

There's a sweet little visitor's center that's worth stopping just before you get to the turn off for the campground. The woman working in there was very friendly and offered a few hiking options. We arrived a little late in the day so we drove a bit further up the mountain to Carver's Gap and then went on a short little hike to Round Bald, right along the AT. As the pictures indicate, it was stunning.

Beautiful in the Fall

Has 2 loops, one for big rigs and one for small ones. The lower loop for larger rigs is $35 a night with free wifi, but it was down when we were there. The smaller loop is very tight and on a hill side. No cell service in either. But a beautiful creek runs along the one side and the running water adds a soothing sound.

Would definitely stay again if there's an opening. Very ful all the time during the summer.

Roan Mountain State Park

Sites #1-40 are for tent camping and the rest are for RVs. We camped with tents in the RV section because it was all that was available. It was definitely tough to find places to put our tents in our site (86), but the designated tent sites were large and flat. It was pretty crowded while we were there and campsites are close together.

The campground has lots of amenities—a pool, amphitheater, camp store with firewood and ice for sale, flush toilets, laundry machines, etc. They put on lots of fun activities like group hikes and educational talks. We went to the see the live music at the amphitheater Saturday night and it was charming. There are lots of hiking trails you can walk to, but we didn‘t have time to check them out. 

The highlight of the trip was hiking the grassy balds starting at Carver’s Gap. Get there early! Parking was tricky when we got there at 9:30am and impossible when we left around 2pm. The scenery was absolutely beautiful. Overall a nice weekend in Roan Mountain State Park!

Roan Mountain in June

This was such a great campsite!! We had such an amazing experience! It wasn’t very crowded and very clean. We brought our puppy on his first camping trip and it was close to Roan Mountain and lots of great hiking!

Beautiful State Park

Absolutely beautiful state park. Excellent visitor’s center at the entrance. Very helpful staff and a couple hicking trails. A little futher up the road are picnic areas, cabins, and the campground. They have a heated pool, tennis courts, playgrounds, tons of hicking trails. The campground is open year round (the lower loop) and has just about everything you need (no sewer hookups). They have programs year round. If you go even farther up to the top of the Roan you reach Carver’s Gap and the Appalacian Trail.

Beautiful, lots of activities

This campground is one of our favorites. It is located in Roan Mountain Tennessee. The campground has clean bathhouses with hot showers. It also has several events at it throughout the year, like trick or treat in the campground and the Rhododendron Festival.

The campground has a creek between some of the sites. It is not easily accessible, but sounds great from inside your tent. There are both tent and RV sites - mostly private sites due to heavy shrubbery. The loop is perfect for kids to ride scooters and bikes. We enjoy hiking at Carver's Gap (at the top of the mountain) and hiking up to Jane Bald and Round Bald - fantastic views!

We hiked on the Appalachian Trail. We did not have to hike far to see amazing 360 views! Not very crowded. This was one of my favorite places to camp.

Hiking on the AT

Friends and I rented a cabin here the 3rd time. It is simply beautiful. The mountains, creeks and nature are breathtaking. There are a lot of hiking trails near by. From easy to moderate… so something for everybody. The cabins are very nice and clean. They have everything you need. I would definitely recommend to stay here and enjoy this gem of nature.

I'd have given RM a 5 star review except for the RV sites are small and so close together. We have a small camper, 15" including the tongue and I felt the site too small. The tent sites are lovely., large and more private. Next time we''ll see if we can get a tent site since our camper is so small. No hook ups on the tent sites, but hey we're camping. The staff was friendly and extremely accommodating. We had some severe weather during our visit. 45mph, horizontal rain and a power outage. The staff was right out after the storm to clean up and help out. Our traveling companions were in a tent and their site was in standing water. The staff hauled in gravel and made an elevated pad as well as helping to move the tent. Great service! The area is spectacular and has something for everyone.

Excellent SP

Probably the most beautiful and peaceful state park in the country! Plenty of things to do to keep you busy here. Ampetheatre, tennis court, pool, Rhododendron Gardens, Carver's Gap, Little Doe River, Miller Farmstead, &amp; visitor center museum; all worth checking out. Only a few things you need to look out for. Some of the spaces are short and roads are narrow. Be picky choosing a site. Also some of the sites are grossly off level. You may need 2 sets of leveling blocks! When it rains you get alot of runoff from the steep banks. We woke up and everything we had outside was covered in mud.  Also you may want to make sure you have everything before you leave. With all this peacefulness comes not a big selection of stores and restaurants. Roan Mnt. has a few small markets, mom &amp; pop restaurants, Dollar General. Elizabethton is about 20 minutes out if you need any fast food, Food City, or Walmart. I know I had some setbacks here, but I will definitely be coming back. Multiple times. Just take plenty of time to do research on this one.

Beautiful and peaceful

Awesome campground with electric water &amp; the occasional WiFi. They have a dump station. Great park tons of trails, they also have a seasonal swimming pool.

One the best run parks in the state. Forget TV and phone service is spotty but who cares, the park is great. Hike, fish or just relax


Quiet and clean 

The park is very nice , very clean. There are shower facilities there . We hiked there, the mountain were cold even in  July. Beautiful place !

Very clean and nice 

We camped in the upper section.  Our site #44, was huge.  The spaces between the sites made it feel very private. The entire park provided lots of roadways and trails that our pups enjoyed.  The camp staff were friendly and helpful.  I would rate this as one of the best campgrounds we have stayed at.

I couldn't believe how big the spaces are. And they have fresh water on each site. My family loved it. We are coming back 

Big sites for a very cheap price. 

I camped here over the weekend with a friend and our dogs.

We were in campsite 62. Our loop was very private and shaded. The only negative point was the street light right across from us. It was pretty bright at night. Our campsite had a picnic table, a fire pit, a water spigot and electricity. There is also a little creek nearby, which was perfect for the dogs. 

The campground is very well maintained, and the bathroom was spotless. The staff, rangers and volunteers, were super friendly. If you forgot something, there is a little camp store on the property. 

Some of the campsites are directly on the water, but they were not very shaded. 

The park also has events scheduled. They had a cloggers dance group when we were there, which was very nice.

There are a lot of things to do in the area. Some of the hiking trails even start in the campground. You can also explore the grist mill with a nature trail or an old homestead. You have access to the AT about 10 miles away. 

Overall it is a very nice and clean campground in a beautiful state park. We would camp here anytime again.

Beautiful place in the mountains

Great sites in loop 5. Up the hill. we had 3 tents and a camper. Shaded, good fire pits, picnic table. Fire pits you had to walk up to but were away from tents, which I liked. Bathhouse was clean, well lit, pretty warm showers. Campground was very clean and has a lot of amenities. We were there for base  camp hiking the Appalachian Trail. Sites 56,57,58 were large flat sites with lots of room if you have a large camper. Was very full the week we were there. Recommend!

Beautiful camping on top of the mountain balds! Watch the sunrise and sunset, but pack appropriately for the wind. The Appalachian Trail passes through this campsite! 

Walk the Appalachian Trail!

This is one of our favorite campgrounds. There is lots of lush foliage and streams. The facilities are usually clean and they offer several activities throughout the week. Friendly staff too.

RMSP is a beautiful state park. The campground is relatively remote. Many of the sites are on a hill, which can make backing in a trailer a challenge. The sites are mostly shaded. Bathrooms are clean, and hot showers are free.

We are currently camping for 5 nights here. Booked our campsite a day in advance; I think we got lucky with a cancellation. We are here during a lot of rain from Ida but it's so beautiful and peaceful.

On a non rainy day, we did 5 hikes to explore the mountain. On a rainy day, we went to Miller Farmstead and ate at Rocky Mountain Bakery (definitely recommend).

Wifi is great, though not sure if it would hold up during a busy crowd. 

If you can book this park in mid June to see all the rhododendrons bloom, you'd be a lucky camper. 

We are in site number 64 which backs up to a wet weather creek. All the sites here are great. They are all fairly spacious. 

We will definitely be coming back here to camp! 

Wonderful park! 

Excellent camping location. Very clean sites with power, water, and level ground. All sites are paved for parking. Quiet at night and plenty of room for kids to play to include a playground and hiking trail.

First time to stay at Roan Mountain. Trout fishing and good hiking and mountain drives. Campground is modern with water, 50 amp for rv’s and very clean showers. 

Mountain Solace

We love this campground. Lots of tall trees and mountains. Wooded sites although many of these are on slopes. A large area is level. Trails are easily accessible from the campground. Bathhouse was clean. We want to come back!

Glorious setting!

the upper numbered sites on the hillside are very private compared to most campgrounds. We have really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful place. 

Beautiful campground

We’ve been to about 15 TN State parks and I’ve never had a ranger tell us our kids couldn’t have scooters. He told me it was a state wide rule.

I accidentally hooked my sewer up thinking there would be a dump on site. My neighbor quickly told me there wasn't so I unhooked it. The next day while getting lectured on the scooters he also lectured me on the dump station because someone reported it to him. I explained it was hooked up all of 15 minutes, but I still got a lecture.

Beautiful But Overbearing

We already had plans to stay here, but we got lucky and was able to move to a creekside campsite after someone cancelled. The sound of the water helps drown out the sound of your neighbors and kids playing, so it really made for a peaceful camping trip. 

We camped during the week and the campground was still almost full! This is a great Basecamp for lots of exploring and hiking in the area. 

The campground has laundry facilities, playgrounds, a small store with wood for sale on site. 

The tent camping area was really nice. I like that there is a designated area so that tent campers do not have to camp amongst the large RV’s. 

Creekside Camping!

We stayed in the lower section along the Doe River (more like a creek through the camping section of the park) in a nice flat site #50.  All sites in the lower section along the river are well spaced, and during our mid-week visit it was quiet.  Easy walk to the clean and modern restrooms.  Sites are well maintained and flat on the lower section.  Would not recommend the upper section, as it was very hilly and didn't see any flat sites.  Sites 40, 41, 44, 46, 48, 50 and 52 are paved; sites 37-39 are gravel.  Park rangers were courteous and provided good local knowledge for anglers.   Took a ride to Carvers Gap (en route to Roan Mtn).  Road to Roan Mtn (summit) was closed until after Memorial Day, but hiked the northbound section of the AT for 360 degree views.  Took a ride to Elk River Falls, about 10 minute car ride from park, and took the easy and short trail to the falls.   Easy ride into town of Newland for a taste of civilization.  Would return…nice place to camp.

Nice place to stay!

I stayed in site 33, which is tent-only. I enjoyed my time here! Almost every site was full, which I realized why later on. The rhododendron on the mountains were in full bloom! The amenities here were well kept and the campsite was large enough. There isn’t much privacy. 

Mid-June Tent Stay

Very pretty place. However the host are on the rude side. From checking in to wanting to over do their jobs. They wouldn't say anything about the people yelling and screaming after 11pm but are fast to get people for small infractions
