Greenbrier Campground TN is surrounded by the Little Pigeon River and offer RV sites, tent camping, RV rentals, cabins, and bell tents. Located only 6 miles from downtown Gatlinburg and 8 miles from the entrance to the GSMNP, we are convenient to all area attractions.



Greenbrier Campground

The property is beautiful, surrounded by a little rushing river which you can hear from quite a distance - lovely white noise for sleeping. 

Gravel tent pads prevent mud when it rains. They're a little small though. Only 16' x 16' tents allowed though which made things challenging for my family of 7. We had to buy a new, smaller tent, and had no room to store our kitchen supplies inside.

Most of the tent sites are in a clearing the middle of all the campers, which makes you feel a bit on display. There are about 6 sites that are down by the river, surrounded by more trees and away from the campers that are fantastic, but they fill up fast.

This campground is definitely geared more towards campers / glamping. The shower rooms were nicer than many hotels and well maintained. 

There is lots of room for kids to play safely and they're constantly expanding and adding new features. Firewood is available for sale, as well as golf carts for rent. 

*BRING QUARTERS* if you plan to use the laundry room. Change is only provided during office hours. 

I plan to return. 

Best bathrooms

_The Greenbriar Campground was the Cadillac of campgrounds in the area, unfortunately we arrived on a weekend that would have been better suited to the “pontoon boat” of campgrounds._

[Greenbriar](http://www.smokymountaincamping.com) is located near the Greenbriar entrance of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, very near the arts and crafts district of Gatlinburg. Access to the facility is by a small bridge that runs over the Little Pigeon River, which splits and runs around the Greenbriar, making it an island of sorts. This is notable as nearly every campsite backs up to the river. There are a handful of internal tent sites and rentable cabins as well. But the vast majority of sites have river access, including a fire pit mounted in the rocks RIGHT ON the river. Imagine yourself peacefully sitting out under the stars, mountain peaks in view, the rush of the Little Pigeon, illuminated by the fire directly in front of you. Though the water fluctuates with rainfall quite a bit, you can always hear it from your tent or RV, which was an added bonus. During warmer months, children can play and swim in the clear and smooth stoned river. There’s also an historic swimming hole on location. Several campers even had hammocks set up between trees that hung over the water on their sites.

Sites are narrow and fairly close together, although they’ve done an excellent job of maintaining the heavy trees around the river and on the “treelawn” area which separates each site. This helps to make a narrow space seem deceptively private. These sites also come equipped with water, sewer and electric hook ups, and even a cable hookup! A newer and clean picnic table is also provided. They designate those few interior sites as “tent” - not that you cannot reserve the other sites with a tent, but because the internal sites have soft, level grass to pitch on, whereas the outlying ones have level pea gravel across the entire site. Ample space is provided for your car to park at the edge of your site - they are long and narrow. I’d recommend a base padding or doubled tarp under your tent if you choose to go that route. Stakes may not hold well in the gravel and somewhat better in the “treelawn” dividers on either side.

Activities and facilities are aptly located in the center of camp. A playground, bath house, laundry facility, game room (with one game! - but to make up for that, it also has couches and a large flat screen TV which many campers happily watched March Madness together on), as well as campstore and volleyball and basketball courts make up the internal area of the camping island, keeping the sites themselves fairly free of noise and passers by. There is also free and reliable WiFi in the campground. This is notable because the area’s mountains make reception touch and go mostly.

This was a pet friendly campground, and many campers had their dogs with them. There was also a small dog park where owners could unleash their pets and let them roam a little. In spite of this, dog barking seemed to be kept in check. It was also a family friendly campground, and the kids seemed to really enjoy the playground coordinated games and socializing.

The bath house appeared to be newer, and will trump your home facilities in many cases! Within the bath house, there are several private doors leading to your own 3 piece bath with shelving and granite counters with outlets, and a stunning double shower. In spite of a very wet and cold weekend, we were pleased at how clean these were kept, as well as the whole campground - likely due to the fine, well draining pea gravel of all the paths.

As a Dyrt Ranger, I often get the opportunity to test products on our trips. This weekend we sampled the [Mountain House Turkey Dinner Casserole](https://www.mountainhouse.com/M/product/homestyle-turkey-dinner-casserole.html?variant_id=235). Despite traveling during the last weekend in March, we encountered very wet and cold weather for the region, and a warm meal was a welcome bonus. Mountain House has a simple preparation, all that is required is hot water to prepare, and the entire prep is done within the package itself, minimizing waste and cleanup. We also ate ours right out of the package as a bowl. The package also seals if you are hiking in and have to bring your rubbish back out in a pack. The meal itself was surprisingly good for a complete rehydration kit. My husband noted that it also seems as though they may have reformulated, the the veggies were brighter and the general consistency was more appealing than we’ve experienced in the past of these types of meals. It was quickly prepared and suitable for two adults.

The campground is perfectly situated for an unending array of activities. Arts and crafts, shopping and the GSM park entrance are all within minutes, and trailheads abound. 15 mins away is Pigeon Forge and all the entertainment that area offers. Access to all is easy and straightforward. Note: Always check the Smoky Mt National Park page before heading out. Given the dramatic nature of the area, including damage and changes in the land and vegetation (which didn’t impede our enjoyment or the natural beauty of the area, by the way) from the recent fires have left some of the trails unstable and can close suddenly. Also - if you wish to hike with your dog, there is only one trail available to you which runs down the side of a beautiful river from the visitors center and lets out directly into the pretty mountain town of Gatlinburg, packed with dining, whiskey walks and various forms of minor entertainment. We went at the very start of their peak tourist season, in inclement weather, and the walks were still crowded. Further in, you will find abundant hikes of varied lengths and difficulties, and many features like waterfalls, rushing rivers, historical primitive sites and much wildlife.

Overall, it is evidence of a great campground and region that we were able to pack so much in over a 3 day weekend in spite of the poor weather and lower temps. All left feeling refreshed and happy from the Greenbriar and the Smoky Mountains.

Ranger Review: Warm Eats with Mountain House on Cold Days at the Greenbriar 

Me and my family has been to this campground a few times now and it is hands down my favorite! We live 6 hours away but frequently visit the area through out the year. We have tent camped back home but wasn’t sure with bears and the kiddos as they are always scared of sounds at night lol. So we stumbled onto Greenbrier via web. They have campers set up fully equipped besides blankets pillows or even towels when ch is no big deal to bring along. The campground is surrounded by water and you can hear the creek from the site. They have a really nice bath house too. I love to fish and fishing is just a few steps away. My kids loved it and so did we and will definitely be back on a our next trip.

Great Family Experience 

This campground is top notch. I’ve stayed here several different times in different seasons. The grounds are well kept with plenty of amenities for families. I look forward to our next trip here. 


fantastic family campground

2times a year I live on a little patch of sacred ground (site #withheld) on the Little Pigeon River riverbank. There is a boulder a few feet away from the bank. Those who know me know my story and that I call that big rock, Serenity Rock.

My home Away From Home

The sound of the bubbling river right outside your door or tent flap. Rafting down the river to the swimming hole or just sitting on a rock. Fishing at the swimming hole in the evening is also a great activity for the family. Hands down my favorite campground. Oh did I mention the beautiful bath houses with granite and rock accents? Still looking for a bear in those mountains.

When I traveled to Tennessee I really wanted to explore the Smoky Mountains and all there was to offer. I had so many suggestions as to which campground was the best and which I needed to stay at that I had to take the time to see as many of these options as I possibly could. This one was at the top of the suggested campsite list because of the following river just behind many of the campsite and the proximity to the entry of the mountains from Gaitlinburg.

I pulled in and it was a bit crowded. And by a bit I mean really crowded. Spaces appeared to be closer together than I typically would like my neighbor to be. Maybe it was my time of visitation, maybe it was the site itself but it just seemed like it was going to be a getting to know your neighbor moment from the start. And that it was! Lucky for me my neighbors were nice and didn't have any random dogs running and barking like some of those across the way.

I had reserved an actual site with amenities of electricity and water instead of opting for the tent site which looked a bit more like general population. I needed the power for my devices and so I thought the cost difference was worth it. Little did I know when booking just how much that would be to my advantage when I arrived. Not only did this give me water right behind me but it. also kept me from having neighbors really on top of me like the general population seemed to be.

The facilities included very nice restrooms which quite frankly made me do a double take on if I was at a campground. Then there was the clubhouse which had a lot of things that no other campground I had visited thus far in the Smokey Mountains had. I guess this is what you get when you stay at a privately owned site versus a government owned and maintained facility. There were also volleyball and basketball in addition to a pretty nice playground for the kiddos. I was pretty happy this was here because it kept kids from running crazy through camp looking for activities like they had been at a few of the other stops I had made.

So what was the kicker?

THE PRICE! They have 3 seasons at this campsite High, Low and Holiday and each season has a different price point. You are by far paying for your access to those amenities. Like I mentioned before I chose an upgraded site which I paid $39 for versus the $29 they were charging for group site camping which was primitive. They also had some non water tent sits which were $35 and that was on the low side as opposed to the RV rates which were so high I would have never considered staying during high season in excess of $45 to $69.

This by far was one of the nicest camps I have been to on this side of the Mississippi but it also came with a hefty price tag!

TIPS:

*   Chose your time wisely. During high season it is always busy, try coming during low season and on a weekday.
*   Take full advantage of all amenities including the wifi and cable tv offered at each site! Mine as well if you are paying that much.

Great Proximity To Entry Of Smoky Mountains

I come here every May and October.  Reservations can be made online site specific.   All sites are good.   The ones towards the back in the 30s are always snatched up first as prime river spots.  Sites are adequate with full hookups.  Tent sites are interior.  Nice shower facility if needed.  Small store on site with essentials.  Easy access to Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge.  Surrounded by hiking galore in the Great Smoky Mountains.   Nice swimming hole for summer fun.   Ping pong and other games.

My favorite in the Gatlinburg area

This place has everything you can think of! Grills and outdoor sinks/counters for tenters, laundry, store, swimming hole, pool table, outdoor dining for large families &amp; play structure. The staff was friendly and the area was clean &amp; well groomed. The sites for campers were narrow and felt congested, but that was the only downside. 

Great Place/Narrow Sites

We stayed here over Christmas time in a 20' travel trailer. Very clean with heated bathrooms washing machines and other amenities. The sound of the rushing river is a plus.

A great find

Had a great 4 days here at Greenbrier. Sites are a little cramped but they did a nice job separating with trees and such. Location is perfect with tons of stuff to do within very short drives. Great place for kids as well as there is plenty for them to do. Bathrooms and showers were numerous and clean AND air conditioned. Cable and WiFi were added bonuses. Will definitely be returning. 

Wonderful!!

We enjoyed our visit. Some sites are small and some are big. Nice and quiet place to relax after a trip to Gatlinburg. You can rent golf carts to ride around the park. Nice playground for the kids and they also have horseshoes and cornhole boards. You can buy tubes to float down the river and get out at their beach area. The bath house is great. It has 8 locking rooms with a sink shower and toilet. There’s a little store up the road that has some supplies if you forgot it and the campground store doesn’t have it. 

Great place

Great campground with lots of amenities. Beautiful individual bathrooms with big showers, playground, corn hole, basketball half court, pool table under outdoor pavilion, heaters, gas grills, fenced in dog park, Sunday services, farmers market one night a week, trolley stop that goes into Gatlinburg, laundry facilities, small beach with  swimming in Little Pigeon River, can tube from one end to the beach area, and a store with ice and wood sales. They have waterfront sites for RVs and tents. The newer “loop” has much wider sites, brand new bath house and a separate beach area. Both beaches can be used by anyone. WiFi is pretty good but cell service is sketchy. There is a Food City about 4 miles away but the little store right before you turn off 321 to go to the campground has a lot of camp gear, RV gear, food, seasonal, etc. Nice man was very appreciative of our purchase. Overall, I’d go again and stay here. 

The Gatlinburg area is right at the Smoky Mountain National Park. Plenty of hiking, sightseeing, waterfalls, history, and scenery to see! We saw bear cubs along Roaring Forks drive. Cades Cove is a great day trip and bears can be seen there too. Greenbrier is right outside the campground off 321 just over the little bridge going toward town. There’s a little sign but you could easily miss it. The best parts were Clingmans Dome, highest point in TN, and going to Anakeesta. Buy a guidebook at the Sugarland Visitor Center so you don’t miss any of the beautiful hiking trails. 

Lots to do!

We stayed here in a fifth wheel in the new area. Sites are large with plenty of room. There is tent camping right along the River we and a new bathhouse. Lots of amenities and you can tube down the river to a swimming hole at the end of the campground. There is an entrance to the park right across the street. Close to Gatlinburg and whitewater rafting area. 

Great Campground at the edge of the park

 Greenbriar campground is located in Pittman Center, west of Gatlinburg, adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains. The campground is certainly one of the nicest camping spots I’ve n the area. The campground is very large, and has multiple camping options. They have tent and rv spots, as well as cabins, but I also saw some teepee style tent cabins. The campground is very wooded, so you feel like you are getting a legitimate Smoky Mountain camping experience. The pigeon river runs through the campground, and is great for fishing, or swimming/tubing in summer. There is a dog park also, and the campground is pet friendly. This campground has so many things to do, and it is very popular, so if you want to camp here, I would suggest booking early, because spots are booked months in advance. The campground is very quiet at night, with just the sounds of nature. There is a camp store, with firewood, and you’ll want to enjoy a campfire, even in the middle of summer. I Highly recommend Greenbriar Campground for camping in the Smokies.

Best Around

We camped here in a spot by the river. There seems to be many good spots on the river and we love the sound of the water!
Sites are full hookup and have cable, picnic tables, fire rings and a grill. Everything was extremely clean. We had a fire one night and the next morning by the time we were outside the next morning, the ashes were cleaned out of the ring.
The bathrooms were awesome. They have individual bathrooms, I think about 8(or maybe 10) full bathrooms with a sink, toilet and shower in each one. So, hubby can shave while wife showers, or whatever works. They were very clean also. 
The dog area was small so my big Labrador would rather take a walk than be in the small fenced area, but it was nice. 
There is a tent area, and a playground area, and a pavilion where I understand they have church services on Sunday.
Definitely would return!


By the river!

Greenbrier is the best. Entrance is beautifully decorated, staff really nice and accommodating, bathrooms/showered nicest I’ve seen and the location on river amongst the trees is idyllic.

Just amazing! Stunning cabin. They supply wood. Water, electric and everything you need. Right in the water. Listen to the river. See the photos. It was awesome!

Wow. What an amazing cabin! Best one yet!

Almost 5 stars! Only negative was that they have a huge playground with many structures but none of it is friendly to littles under age 5 which means you have to “helicopter parent” if you have a little... 

The campground is surrounded by a little river so many sites have river views. Most are relatively spacious. There are also a few spots on the road side of the island.

The amenities were spotless. Laundry was pretty new and worked great. 

Location was fantastic. Removed from the chaos and in the woods but close enough to be in Gatlinburg in 10 minutes or on a smoky mountain hike in 20. 5 stars for this location! 

We stayed in #200 which is a “sideways pull though” though it’s a pretty risky attempt to actually pull through vs back in with a tight squeeze between a tree and your hookups. This spot is on the road side (off the island) but we had an excellent river front and the road noise wasn’t a problem. 

Wifi is ok... good for most things but can’t handle a video conference. Had ok cell service on att. 

Quiet rivers east of Gatlinburg

I rated this a 4 because the camping sites are quite close together which feels like you are almost up on top of your neighbor.  The setting is quite beautiful and most have a river view (I love waking up to the sound of flowing water).  The swimming hole really wasn't much of a swimming hole, which was disappointing because that was the whole reason that my sister, visiting from California, wanted to stay there.  It was quite pricey, so I am not sure that we would stay there again when it might be more affordable to stay elsewhere.  We stayed Easter weekend and it was sweet that they did an Easter egg hunt for the smaller kids.

Nice Campground with nice people

This was a great little campground.  It’s just a very short drive to Gatlinburg and the Sugarlands Visitor Center of GSM National Park.  The campground offers full hookups, PRIVATE bathrooms with great showers, ice and firewood sales, shuttle to downtown, and waterfront sites. We stayed in site #16 and it was perfect!  It’s one of their wider sites so we didn’t feel we were on top of our neighbors.  The Little Pigeon River was just steps off the back of our camper.  My kids enjoyed the swimming hike as well although the water was freezing.  The staff was friendly and everything was very clean.  It’s pricey, but I’d definitely go back!  

Secluded But In the Middle Of It All

This campground is very clean and well kept public areas. It is right in the little Pigeon River and most of the sites are right on the river. They have some yurt-like tents for rent they looked pretty nice. We had site 58- which was nice bc it was larger than many of the sites- it was not right on the river- but short walk to the water. Great facilities and staff was welcoming and helpful in sharing info about local attractions and the Smokies. 

Great campground- sites small

We stayed here may 9- 12, having to reserve in January I figured it would’ve been warmer, but we still had a great time - just didn’t get to enjoy the swimming hole. The grounds are well kept and staff professional. We stayed on site 9 right on creek , very scenic and  sound of water was therapeutic . Site was directly across from playground also. We camped here w 2 children and 2 dogs. Highly recommend as a great family campground!

Very friendly and helpful staff

We stayed for a week on an RV back in site. The sites can be soemwhat close together, but with this mostly just being home base, we didn’t find it to be a problem. Our oldest rented a bell tent, and when I say they are the cutest camping spot, I am not exaggerating. The bell tents sit on the river and away from all the RV sites. They even include 2 full size beds and lamps/nightstands. The entire grounds is surrounded by a river that has a swimming hole and can be traversed in a tube. The playground is large and our son was there multiple times a day. They have a movie in the park each Friday and offer church services on Sundays. The trolley runs through the grounds and into downtown gatlinburg, but takes about 30 minutes to get to town. The bathrooms/showers are all private stalls and pretty well maintained. We will definitely be visiting again in the future. 

Amazing location in the Smokies

Staying in site 1, downsides would be its right at the entrance, however we do have a small pebbled creek running behind our site.  The creek runs along the backside of most sites at this campground and leads into a large swimming hole in the back corner. The hole has a few large rocks that can be jumped off of and you can also bring your own or purchase a tube to float down the mini rapids.  Camp store is very well equipped and staff is friendly.  Close to lots of Gatlinburg fun. Large trees in each site and throughout grounds. WiFi is OK, cell service is OK, not great. We’ve certainly been places where these are worse.  Trout fishing abounds with the river being restocked every other week.  Charcoal grill and fire pit and nice picnic table on each site.  Bathhouses are very clean and have individual rooms with toilets and showered.  

Easy to get to coming from I-40 as long as you follow the directions on their website and not GPS. 

We’re loving our time at Greenbrier! 

A larger campground with a smaller feel 

Nice campgrounds. Clean and appears well managed. Creekside sites are very nice and relaxing. Plenty to do for the kids. My only critique is the smaller spaces are just that - noticeably smaller and tight. Reserve the larger ones!

Nice campground

The camp ground is surrounded by a river. The only way you can get in is through the bridge. The restrooms were super clean. Our kids loved the playground. The basketball court was also good and come with a ball that anyone can use. The pavilion are open to campers and we used the propane grill. The game room has some nostalgic games available for play. A private river beach is pretty good and can swim safely there.

Well manged special campground

We stayed 3 nights in the Baby Bear bell tent with our small children and it was perfect. We ended up arriving later than expected and the hosts were wonderful. Very nice and helpful our whole stay. The river front bell tents are where it’s at! You’re a few steps from a small babbling creek. The kids loved wading and catching minnows. Even when it rained, the tent was comfortable and roomy. I can’t say enough great things about how clean the bath and shower houses are! Close enough to Gatlinburg and the National Park entrances, yet far from the crazy crowds. Would definitely return here. 

Great river front location close to the NP

Phenomenal bathhouses but a splash in the river is all you really need. We had a great late July tent camp here with our 4 and 1 year old. The staff were very kind and accommodated our late arrival

Little Pigeon River

I was not expecting to enjoy our stay at Greenbrier Campground as I booked it simply because nothing in the National Park was available (it was a weekend). Boy was I wrong! The park was clean, quiet, and right on a stream - absolutely LOVELY! They also offered activities for kids, wonderful hot shower rooms, a laundry room. and gas grills for anyone to use! The first day we went out sightseeing and came back to find our camp chairs were gone. We reported it to the office and they were so concerned they actually gave us new chairs to replace them!! Above and beyond the call of duty there! I will definitely stay here again if we find ourselves in the area!

Wonderful Private Campground close to Smoky Mountain National Park

So, the location is great. The bath houses are great. The customer service is great. 

But the sites are sooooo small and tight, and the cost is… quite a bit. Not saying the cost isn’t fair considering the amenities (and activities, although it was too cold when we went for that), but if you’re just looking for a place to sleep while exploring Gatlinburg, then you aren’t necessarily getting your full money’s worth. 

We stayed on sites 70 and 71. 

Excellent except…

We had a river spot and it was gorgeous.  I will say that the lots are close to one another and it is not very private but it was pretty hot and we didn't hang outside by the camper much.  Most of the time we were at the playground or beach.  The river water is ice cold!  A shock to the system after 100 degree days haha.  Once you just plunge in it is wonderful.  The campground is about 20 minutes from Gatlinburg which is a plus to me.  Much more quiet and less populated of an area.   The landscaping at this campground is gorgeous, they work hard on it for sure.  There are big boulders that line the camps roads which were a little obnoxious maneuvering around when backing in but nothing that terrible.

Beautiful Scenery

Greenbrier has improved their campground even more. This time we stayed in the “new” front area. The sites are bigger and water front. There’s a new bathhouse with several individual bathrooms. The dog park is near this area as well as a swimming area on the river. It’s a short walk to the office/store and all the activities they offer. It’s quiet, peaceful, close enough to Gatlinburg to get there and back easily, and has a trolley that takes you on and out of downtown. There was music one night, BINGO, another night and an Ice Cream truck and Kona Truck came through every evening. Use Google maps to look at sites for width. Some are wider than others. Wifi is great for to one who need that. 

Even better 2nd time here!

So for the price we paid, it’s so not worth it. The spots are right on top of each other and this place is crowded. The staff is pretty friendly and they do have a cute playground for kids, but I didn’t pay for a playground. I guess it’s not what we were expecting or looking for. We like more nature views and less people views.

It’s nice, but…

Really enjoyed it. Pretty creek. Great playground. Very quiet at night. Close to Gatlinburg.
