Best RV Parks & Resorts near Blackhawk, SD

Three Flags RV Park and Black Hawk Creek RV Park offer full hookup sites for recreational vehicles in the Black Hills region. Three Flags provides pull-through sites with 30/50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections on level gravel pads with grassy areas. Black Hawk Creek accommodates larger motorhomes with concrete pads and operates from April through October. Nearby, Lazy JD RV Park in Piedmont provides seasonal sites from May through September with 50-amp service. Sites throughout the area typically include picnic tables and many support larger rigs, though spacing varies between properties. "Sites are well-maintained, level, power and water is good, sewer hookups work properly," noted one visitor about Three Flags RV Park.

Most Black Hills RV parks require reservations, particularly during summer months and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in early August when availability becomes extremely limited. Highway access to most parks is straightforward, though some highway noise affects properties situated along major routes. Dump stations are available at most parks, with Three Flags offering an on-site station for those without full hookups. Cellular service varies throughout the region with stronger connections near Rapid City and more limited coverage in canyon areas. Several parks maintain shower facilities, laundry rooms, and on-site stores with RV essentials. A camper observed that Three Flags has "clean bathrooms and showers" with "no Wifi streaming" and "Verizon is pretty slow, but acceptable."

    Heartland RV Park And Cabins

    Nice Place

Long term stay. Great rates. All staff very courteous. All facilities clean and well maintained. Level gravel pull through sites of varying sizes. Each site has grass area except on the new end. It is very close to the highway, so there is a lot of road noise. Other than that our stay here has been excellent. Good cell reception. Standard campground wifi, but good reception. Haven't used cable. Nice enclosed dog exercise area. Playground for kiddies. It is off season, so pool, tennis court and some other facilities closed right now. We will be leaving the end of November, but after having been at several campgrounds over the past 2 years, this will be our go to place in the Rapid City area from now on.

    Crystal Park Campground

Okay with a Lot of Potential

Arrived and parked at the new Gateway Travel Center in Newcastle to check in. We have been coming to this area for an annual hunting trip for 8 years. We stayed here two years ago and upfront its not the best of campgrounds (CG), but looks like some improvements are being attempted. This CG is still the best option for the area. The travel center and RV park used to be an outdoor movie theater back when. You now check in inside the travel center’s convenience store. You go to the check out counter, fill out your paperwork, and get your assigned site. We were traveling with another RV and were assigned sites 30 and 28, which are FHUs with 50/30 AMP. Technically there were sites 31 and 29 adjacent to our sites. The sites were small enough as it was, but if someone would have come in beside us into site 31, we would have been literally an arms length away from each other.  With both of us in our party having fifth wheels with slide outs on both sides, there was no way anyone could have pulled into site 29 between us. However, no one was placed next to us during our 5 day stay and we believe the new CG management wouldn't purposely place someone next to a big rig. We recommend that once you receive your assigned site, go scope it out. They were putting in new site signs but had not gotten to our site so the number was written on the electric box with a permanent marker. Some of the sites here are standalone 30 AMP or 20 AMP, perfect for travel vans.  There is no WiFi in the CG but the travel center has free unsecured Wifi near the pumps and in the convenience store that also has a Taco Johns. The last time we stayed here, there were pipeline workers and the CG was full. This time there were only a few transient workers. They have two pretty nice tent camping areas in the grass and their restroom/shower/laundry facility was well maintained and clean. They have 2 washers and 2 dryers that were very reasonably priced at $1.50 to wash and $1.50 to dry. The RV sites do not have picnic tables nor fire rings but the the tent areas have a few. Every morning and evening we had wild turkeys and mule deer roaming around the CG. With the Fountain Inn Hotel and the RV Park pretty much co-located, this CG made a good choice for our RV and hotel staying hunting group.

Four Mile Old West Town Campground

    Simple

50amps full hookups are for those who are long term. No shower house. Sites are pull through our 32 ft 5th wheel and 250 had plenty of space in the spot. But sites are close to each other. 30amp I noticed all had full hookups. Sites are level. The place is quite, right off hwy 16, and a great shot of the mountains. It’s a good place to stay if you aren’t spending time at your camp site but visiting around.

    Hart Ranch RV Resort

    Great RPI Resort campground

If you have an RPI membership, this place is a no-brainer. It’s a huge and well maintained RV resort with tons of family friendly amenities. Onsite restaurant and convenience store with gas station. Large pool with hot tubs. Tennis, basketball, pickleball, and shuffleboard courts. Mini golf and an activity center that will loan you a variety of sports gear and well as rent bikes and golf carts. A massive dog park. Our kids also attended a 2 day horse camp onsite which was very fun for them and very reasonably priced. The list of activities is endless. Tons of kids biking around and playing, so easy for kids to make friends. They also have cabin rentals and a few tent sites. There’s a weekly rodeo held onsite during peak season. It’s 15 minutes from Rapid City and close to the Black Hills. If you are looking for a base camp to explore this area, Hart Ranch is a great choice.

Elk Mountain Campground — Wind Cave National Park

    Nice Setting

Elk Mnt -Wind Cave NP 10/24

(72 yr olds in 27’ trailer.)

Overall Rating: 4 for stopover convenience, setting, and exploring the NP Price 2024: $ 6(the off season, no water price) w interagency pass Security: no Usage during visit: light - this cg is shutting down in a few days. Only 1 loop is now open. Visual Privacy Between Adjacent Sites: no Site Spacing: pull over sites in Loop B were 50+ feet apart.
Pad surface: gravel Reservations: yes Campground Noise: quiet Outside Road Noise: none Through Traffic in campground: none Electric Hookup: no Sewer Hookup: no Dump Station: no Potable Water Available: yes, but currently turned off Bathroom: pit toilet is clean and open.
Showers: no Pull Throughs: Some pullovers- in b loop have nice view of grassland rolling hills. However, not all will allow for a driver’s side slide. Our site, #15 did have room, barely. Cell Service (AT&T): no bars. Setting: attractive rolling grasslands and pine forest. Recent Weather: highs in the 70s. Solar: yes Insects: none Host: none this time of year.
Rig Size: some sites will probably allow for a 40’ or so trailer. Check carefully when reserving on rec dot gov.
Sites: 16, 20, 18, 15: I like these pull over sites, because they have a nice view of the rolling grasslands. However, in our site, number 15, we were able to barely get our slide out without it protruding over the campground road. Some of the other pullover sites in B loop offer less room for a safe slide out usage. Other loops have wider pullover sites for trailers with slide outs. I took pictures of some of these sites with their numbered posts.

    Black Hills RV Park

    Dog run and convenient

Unable to reserve online for same night. Called and assured space available never asked name, etc. Luckily the spot was near back of campground with very short walk to stunning view. All sites gravel with picnic tables. Sites are close together but due to early Oct, they tried to park RVs every other space in middle of campground. Many long term residents around outsides of park. 2 small Dog runs in front; grass dog walking area in back. Next to Fort Hays, home of $0.99 cowboy pancake breakfast and Dances with Wolves film set. Convenient as Mt Rushmore is only 20 miles & 36 miles to Crazy Horse Memorial. Extremely clean toilet and bath house!!

    Bulldog Creek Campground

A Hidden Gem that Borders the Black Hills National Forest !

I absolutely LOVE the Bulldog Creek Campground!   Nestled against the Black Hills National Forest, it is scenic, relatively quiet, peaceful and entertaining! First, the Rates...$40-50 per night with full, 50a hookups,$30 for 30a full hookup,$10 for tent camping, if you're just going to stay a night or two. If you just want a safe, quiet place to dry camp overnight, it's$20.

Now the really good part; if you want a base camp for a month or more and enjoy exploring the Black Hills, Sturgis and Rapid City, you can get 50a full hookup, pull-through site for just$550 per month plus electric! That's a bargain in this area. I was at the Ellsworth AFB famcamp who had just raised their rates to a whopping$54 per day, with no discounts available for long-term stays.

The campground is just off I-90, but set back farther than most, so not a distraction. There is an active rail line along the highway, but so far, I've not seen more than two trains in a day, and none at night. So even if it's for just a week or two, and not a month.. call Aaron, the owner. I'm sure he'll work the numbers a bit, just to have your business!

And as for entertainment, on my first night here, there was a heard of at least 2 dozen deer grazing through the campground. Several of them came within a few feet of my door as I talked to them! This mornings sunrise, accompanied by a hot cup of coffee, was exceptional. You just have to come visit!

    Three Flags RV Park

Great amenities. Day trip to Badlands.

We stayed here for 2 nights. There were full hookups and E/W spots. There were plenty of hot showers, a dump station, laundry, and propane refills, plus a tiny store. The grassy spots were level. Everything was cleaned daily. The only downside was considerable road noise from the freeway, but a fan or A/C can drown that out.

Guide to Blackhawk

Several RV campgrounds near Blackhawk, South Dakota provide convenient access to the Black Hills' attractions. Located at an elevation of approximately 3,500 feet, this area experiences seasonal temperature swings with summer highs around 85°F and winter lows frequently below freezing. Gravel or concrete pads are standard at most facilities, with varying levels of shade depending on location.

What to do

National monuments access: From Heartland RV Park, travelers can conveniently reach Mount Rushmore and other major attractions. "Heartland RV Park is located relatively close to Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore and many other tourist sites," notes Daryl L. The park provides information about drive times: "They provide a printout with all the local attractions and how far they were! So helpful."

Wildlife viewing: The region offers exceptional wildlife observation opportunities within a short drive. "We spent 6 nights and had awesome day trips with wildlife experience the entire stay," shares Barbara F. from Heartland RV Park. Visitors frequently recommend Custer State Park for buffalo herds and the Wildlife Visitor Center at dusk for optimal viewing.

Evening entertainment: Several parks provide on-site activities after a day of sightseeing. At Rush No More Campground, guests enjoy various amenities. "There is a playground for the kids and a beer garden for the adults. Entertainment on certain nights, food and fun," according to Monique C. Some parks host live performances regularly, with one guest noting, "Live band on Sunday. Outstanding."

What campers like

Central location: Holy Smoke Resort receives praise for its strategic position. Lawrence P. explains, "Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and many of the other attractions are very close and easy to get to from here. If you need a big city feel, Rapid City is a short ride away as well." This balance of natural attractions and urban amenities appeals to many visitors.

Clean facilities: Campground cleanliness consistently earns positive comments from guests. At Rapid City RV Park & Campground, Wendy M. appreciates "great location with an awesome view! The spots were pretty level; bathrooms were clean; great laundry facility and the arcade room was nice to have!" Similar comments appear across multiple properties in the region.

Extra amenities: Swimming pools, hot tubs, and community spaces enhance the camping experience. Laura F. at Heartland RV Park mentions, "Easy to get to, pool, hot tub, showers and restrooms. Level sites, and friendly staff." Some facilities offer dining options, with Bonnie F. sharing, "This place is fun with unique flare. On-site restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner with live music each night."

What you should know

Highway noise: Many RV parks in the Blackhawk area sit close to major roadways, creating noise concerns for light sleepers. At Black Hills RV Park, one camper notes, "Only more expensive. Sites very close-- and neighbors a self-storage site, so you really feel you may be in storage." Highway 79 generates significant traffic sounds at some properties.

Limited shade: The region's landscape means limited natural cover at many parks. Emily C. at Rapid City RV Park explains, "It's off a highway but the site is around woods so it's peaceful." Another visitor mentions, "Very open spots but not bad if you're traveling through."

Reservation requirements: Booking well in advance proves essential, particularly during summer. Even less popular sites fill quickly for peak periods. At Lazy JD RV Park, scarlett K. found it to be a "Cash only Rv campground. Only one washer/drier on honor system. It is located close to all services in rapid city SD."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Children need recreation space after long drives. Love's RV Stop-Box Elder 602 offers play areas as noted by Ileana I.: "There's also a playground and dog park on site." Similarly, Amy C. appreciates that Heartland RV Park has "a nice children's play area which is fenced in."

Recreational options: Look for campgrounds with activities beyond traditional camping. At Holy Smoke Resort, Matt D. notes, "Nice centrally located RV park with 14-15 large pull-through sites with full water, sewer and 30/50 amp hookups." Many parks provide gathering spaces where families can relax together after sightseeing.

Bathroom facilities: Clean, accessible restrooms matter significantly for families. Tina M. shares that Heartland has a "Small little pool to cool off," while another visitor mentions, "The shower stalls are small and curtains are short so the dressing room floor got wet so could get dress without getting cloths wet."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Many Blackhawk area campgrounds feature sloped terrain requiring leveling equipment. Kara C. at Rapid City RV Park & Campground shares, "Only thing was the sites are a little small but even I had no issue parking my 33'6" motorhome and I had only stayed at two other locations prior to this visit."

Internet access: WiFi quality varies significantly between properties. At Three Flags RV Park, Michael B. notes, "No Wifi streaming, Verizon is pretty slow, but acceptable." Some parks offer premium WiFi options for additional fees, which becomes important for longer stays.

Year-round considerations: Most parks operate seasonally, typically April through October. Ron R. at Three Flags observes, "This Park is kept very clean. Laundry room and machines are organized and in great operating condition. Bathrooms and showers are cleaned very often. RV spots are level." Sites with concrete pads generally remain serviceable later into fall than those with gravel bases.
