Champoeg State Heritage Area features a rare combination of history, nature, and recreation. Situated south of Newburg along the scenic Willamette River, Champoeg's forests, fields, and wetlands recreate the landscape of a bygone era.

This is the site where Oregon's first provisional government was formed by a historical vote in 1843. A thriving town of 200 was established, only to be washed away during a great flood in 1861. This rich history earns the park’s placement on the National Register of Historic Places.

A diversity of activities await. Enjoy walking or biking on the paved trails that pass historical landmarks and hug the river. Play the 18-hole disc golf course under the oak trees, relax at the multitude of scenic picnic areas, or fish or kayak from dock on the Willamette River. For RV's there are 21 full-hookup sites and 54 electric sites with water.

The ecologically rich landscape is home to more than 130 bird species, including seasonally nesting western bluebirds and acorn woodpeckers.

Champoeg State Heritage Area

Champoeg State Park is on the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway, and a great place to camp if you want to do a long biking getaway. The campground is pretty full service for a state park. You can buy ice and firewood onsite, and there is a small store that is a short walk away. There is also a children's playground and lots of bike paths.

What Champoeg is lacking is atmosphere. Since you're in the valley, the campground is mostly just flat land with very little tree cover. You'll definitely be able to see your neighbors whether you're in the tent or rv area.

Biking the loop to St. Paul is a fun countryside ride. The location is also pretty accessible to wine country.

Bring your bike!

Bike trails, huge visitors center with a museum, disc golf, wide open picnic and pet exercise areas, some beautiful campsites, everything well off the road.  Some of the sites were a little close together, but the place is so huge, well-attended by rangers and with the large areas well separated.  Part of the beautiful countryside that is the Willamette Valley.   

Spread Out, Lots to Do, History Well-Preserved

This is a jewel location for a park.  Not only are there 16 miles of off road biking trails, there is a large open area for frizz-bee Golf with baskets.  This campground accommodates RVs, and walk in Tents and there are Yurts and Cabins to rent.   I have enclosed a photo with the rates for this year.  There is also a camping areas along the river accessible from a boat.  There was a great little museum store with the history of the area as a beaver trapping area that was farmed by trappers who settled there.  

Precious area and tranquil campground along the Williamette River

I arrived at Champoeg State Park on my bike in the rain. The park ranger was very friendly. After paying my $5 fee for one night, he directed me to the area reserved for hikers and cyclists. As I rode up to the site, I noticed right away that it was not tucked far away from the amenities such as restrooms, and showers. It was part of one of the campground loops. The site itself was fabulous. There were two covered shelters with food lockers and power outlets. Piped water was nearby. The showers, individual rooms, were nice and hot. Overall, the restrooms and showers were clean. 
Champoeg is a large park with lots of hiking and biking trails and plenty to do for families. There is also a camp store that is fairly well stocked with camping necessities. 
Interesting for the cycle tourist, Champoeg is the beginning/end of the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway, one of Oregon's well-signed bike routes following low traffic roads. This route goes all the way to Eugene.
I highly recommend a visit to Champoeg State Park, especially if you are a cyclist!

Excellent Hiker/Biker Facilities

This is one of the best places to camp, especially with families. Tons of trails, disc golf course, water, biking, local wine tours, & great park activities.

Awesome State Park

Do you want to; Tent, RV, Cabin or Yurt camp? Well this place is for you.  Small campground overall however it is very much a place to camp!   Located at the historic Champoeg State park there are a number of buildings and preserves that are dedicated to the history of the fur trading of the era.  From Frisbee golf courses to numerous hiking trails, horseshoe pits, museums and festivals galore! Camping alongside the Willamette River allows you to canoe, kayak, paddleboard,  water ski / wakeboard, or any other boating sports. Fishing is alright- not the best I have fished here but they are out there. 
Clean bathrooms, "public" dock, great site layouts, close by to portland and surrounding suburb areas- go Wine Tasting one day and then sleep in the various oak groves under the stars.  EXCELLENT location to get a taste of Portland without getting city. 

Historic Site, Variety of Camping options, beautiful area

Beautiful place! Nice RV spots, electric and water (rv dump station separate). Disc golf course, hiking, biking trails, shower facility, picnic tables, bike air up station, museum (we never got to), gift store, and close to the Willamette for fishing. We all agreed we could have stayed a week! Will definitely come back here! We rate this one 8.5 to 9.

Champoeg State Park

We had a great time at a vintage trailer rally at Champoeg State Park. Super-close to Portland, with great facilities, a dock, good sized camp sites and even a cool museum. Definitely worth a trip. The small town of Aurora, Oregon, is across the freeway and worth a stop if you're into ice cream or antiques. Campground also includes cabins, yurts, and if you really want to save money--it's just $5 if you come by bike.

Amazing Campground Close to Portland.

Champoeg State Heritage Area is a great place to visit for camping, biking, and especially if you're excited about Oregon history. There's tons to do including a museum, a monument to where Oregon was founded, and the Butteville Store is located a 3-mile hike away (the oldest continuously operating store in all of Oregon…it has great ice cream!). The camp sites aren't anything special. But the bathrooms are clean, there's a small but fun newer natural playground, and lots and lots of fields and woods to explore. Oh, and it's on a river! Probably the best part is how close it is to Portland. About a half hour drive and you're off camping!

Beautiful area and easy access to restrooms and showers

Just awesome 

I am going to try staying here again in the winter, the sites are small and close enough together that in peak summer season it’s pretty darn noisy, the joyful din of summer break.

Lots of trees around the tent sites so there is a lot of shade which is nice. Shorter driveways though so not a lot of room for extra cars. The ADA accessible spots are great, paverstones under the picnic areas and such; very nice.

If you like disc golf this is definitely the place to go, huge sprawling shaded course is very inviting and everyone who was playing looked like they were having a good time. Great destination for lazy bike rides, miles of paved low incline trails. Plus as well, they have a bike tools available as well, a work station for light repairs.

Full service campgrounds, yurt sites have more space around ‘em so it may be a better option for in the future.

Good river and fishing access, lots of low-key trails to explore. Dogs are welcome on leash and there is a designated area for them to romp too.

Crowded Disc Golf Fun

Not very good access to the river here, not the place to try and cool down, but a lot to see and do anyway. The farmhouse fascinated my boys... they got to water the garden with a water pump and buckets!

Cool Heritage Site!

I stayed in the 1 of 5 tent spaces. They were a bit close to the other sites, but still large enough for a few tents if needed. There was only 1 parking lot for the tent/cabin spaces, so had to carry all my stuff about 100 feet. The bathrooms were clean and well lit at night. The bike paths through the campground/park were great and lots of people were using them all day. I walked the path around the entire park, which took me about 3 hours. Along the way got to see the Champoeg Heritage site with period piece actors, wide open spaces, and the Willamette River. There was a huge playground for the kids. There was also a large field area for dogs to roam around, just no fence. For being so close to the greater Portland area it felt like we were much further away. I would recommend this place, just make reservations early.

Great place for Families!

This campground isn't my go to for a regular camping trip, however it's a great place to get from the city on my bike easily. The hiker biker site is top notch and provides plenty of distance from the main campground.

The settings are beautiful and highly recommend the trails that connect to the park. Walking along the river is a treat.

Champoeg

We've been here 3 times, once for tent camping and twice in a yurt. The yurts are heated, and a couple of them are pet friendly, which is great for us! There is a small table in each yurt. Theres a couch and a bunk bed for sleeping arrangements, with the lower bunk larger than the top bunk. Great walking trails and day use areas, and our favorite thing about this place is biking on the biking trails surrounding the area. Beautiful and close to civilization for a quick and low key camping trip. Great for beginner campers and families!

Good for biking, heated yurts, smaller tent spots

Lots of cool things to do, bike trail that goes along the river and a really cool play area for the kids plus a great big dog exercise area.

Lovely place 

Love to stay here when all the other campgrounds close. Nice hiking trails. The rangers are very nice. Beautiful scenery. Only downside is some of the people who stay here make it uncomfortable for others and destroy the bathrooms. But other than that I'd stay again.

Pretty spots, helpful rangers

It fits right in with most state parks. No sewage lines except for a few spots that are almost always taken. 

People are great, Park is easy to navigate. A few spots in A loop like A-7, A-21,23 used to be tent sights so they aren’t at your typical “RV Angle” and tougher for long rigs to get into. 

Grass, streets and sights are all extremely well maintained. Worth the visit!

Great State Park

Champoeg has a little everything. GREAT biking trails that are kid friendly. There lots of historical sites around the campground to enjoy as well.  Loop B is highly our favorite  because it is smaller and more private and close to the river. We’ll go back year after year. Our kids had a blast! 

Great family getaway 

Great historic park with no issues with hookups in the RV area. Spring and summer can be a bug challenge so bring lots of insect repellant! 

Beautiful park

Came here for one night to meet a friend who was camping here and was pleasantly surprised. There wasn't a lot of privacy, but my site was nice and level with a picnic table and fire pit. Electric and water at the site and a very nice, new dump station on the way out. 

  

Did a walk along the bike path--lots of people out biking. Very pretty and cool on a warm day. Didn't see too many kids. A very nice off-leash area for the dogs. Didn't make it down to the river or the historic site.

Not Bad!

Big campground with lots of amenities but still a friendly feel and nice spacing. Well kept and clean facilities from bathrooms to dump station. Would definitely come back!

Amazing facility!

This camp grounds has walking trails, biking, fishing, big park area. In the  A loop camping area it is clean however the sites are open to others. 

Great place

This was our first trip in our new pop-up camper! This was a great campground to try it out in. The sites in A loop are definitely closer together than B loop, but we liked being close to the playground. The bike trails were fun and the fall leaves are gorgeous right now. I was surprised that it was practically fully booked mid-week in Oct!

Fun + Close to home

This is a great spot for a quick weekend outing if you live near Portland.  Nice hike along the river and interesting history to learn about.  Not much privacy at sites and the cabins are small but the campground is well kept and easy to get to.

Close to Portland 

My first RV campground. I purchased my Artic Fox 1150 in Portland and drove directly to this lovely state park so that I could read my manuals and learn how to live in my camper for the next year on a cross country road trip. I learned later that I was a bit spoiled by this first experience. Oregon has done an excellent job with its state parks. Only one loop was open for the winter, but the sites had full hookups and good spacing between sites. I stayed in four different sites over two visits in the month of December, and they were all great. The rangers and camp hosts were all great as well. There was a one acre plot set aside for dogs to run and play….a big plus for me. I was also able to remove the camper from the truck and run errands. I found out later that a lot of places will not let you do this.

Another Great Oregon State Park

Great pull thru site and on the end of the loop. It had a big shared grassy area in the middle, big enough that multiple families were out playing games and having fun without getting in each other’s way. The site itself was clean, grass right to the edges of the trailer parking. It’s had a nice, level area for the picnic table and the fire pit was just off of that. Power and water hook ups for out trailer. I would definitely purpose to reserve this site again. 

Nice, clean pull thru site

This campground is dripping in green in the spring!  It has a very park-like quality with manicured landscaping and very nicely laid-out sites with plenty of space in between. Each site is paved to accommodate RV’s and campers with electricity and water. The bath house was clean, the water was hot, and they had almost enough towel hooks (can we ever have enough?). 

  

The park offers hiking, cycling paths, huge picnic areas and a disc golf course, in addition to boat landings for a canoe along the Willamette River. If you want to get out of downtown Portland for a quick and easy weekend away, this might be your place. There are also winery tasting rooms within a few minutes drive.

  

The park’s proximity to I-5 means that you can still hear the traffic but not so much that it disturbs sleep. Nearby towns of Wilsonville and Newberg have all the usual services. We don’t usually camp at state parks because with our solar powered system, we never need to plug into an electric hook-up, however the nice shower after a few days on the road was really worth it.

Manicured & Clean, Close to Town

We had a great spot in B-Loop. Close to the restrooms and also close to the off leash dog area. We thought it was very quiet and everyone in the loop was friendly. We will definitely be back.
