Ecological restoration at Ochlockonee River State Park has successfully preserved the beautiful longleaf pine forests that once covered much of the state. Trails allow visitors to explore the park and see the diverse wildlife, including the red-cockaded woodpecker, and natural communities such as pine flatwoods and sandhill.

A boat ramp provides easy access to the river. Both freshwater and saltwater fish inhabit the waters around the park, including largemouth bass, bream, catfish and speckled perch.

For overnight visitors, there are full-facility campsites with access to restrooms and showers. Youth group camping is also available. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent at the ranger station. 

Picnic facilities and a swimming area are located near the scenic point where the Ochlockonee and Dead rivers intersect.

Ochlockonee River State Park Campground

Set back in palms and live oak, the campground is private with some sites very private and others not at all. The best sites seemed to be #7-9 and #18-21 as they have the best privacy, are close to the river, and are completely set back from the main loop. Sites closest to the bathroom have to contend with hearing the bathhouse fan (although light from the bathroom didn't seem to be an issue). Unfortunately I ended up with the last sight available, #26, right next to the end of the bathrooms with the fan. Good thing I travel with earplugs. On the plus side, my site was a pull through so coming and going was very simple. 

There are some really nice trails along both the Ochlockonee and Dead Rivers, as well as a pretty scenic drive that is "paved" with wood chips, which makes it perfect for hiking. While I didn't see any gators, there were signs warning about them. I did see several deer, a raccoon, and some lizards. 

Town is about twenty minutes away if you need anything. There are several bars and restaurants as well as an IGA grocery. You can even find services offering boat rentals.

Remote and quiet

We booked 5 nights and left after one night due to ticks. The campground layout is real bad. We went there to see the white squirrels and white deer.  We saw them and left the next morning. See "RV Camping Journal" for details. We were told that there is only one Albino deer in the park.

Ochlockonee River State Park

We came to this campground after staying at St George Island state oro to complete a 2 week trip.  We read the reviews of the small spaces for big rigs and we confirm it as we arrived.. although it is a fact we still made it with our fifth wheel on campsite#9 designated for a 35’.   If the site had the front bushes trimmed out it would make it easier since it’s a curve to back it. But at the end we just back straight and the privacy of it was worth it.. it’s just back of the river and canoeing area and although we got rained at arrival since hurricane Sally approach same day we were able to see what we came for, quiet, peace, small not crowded campsite and got to see very close the unique white squirrel.  Rangers at main gate were very friendly and gave us great information and tips due to heavy rain and winds expected due to hurricane Sally approaching same night.  We walk thru a couple of trials and everything was well maintained.  Also used the women’s restroom and although is not new the toilet and sink areas were really cleaned and the toilet paper was actually of a great quality. ( impressive knowing this to be badly rated restrooms).  The tide creek Picnic Shelter is well maintained , lots of parking and there is a lot to do if you bring the kids including swings and slides.  Canoeing, fishing, fire rings and all the uniqueness of the palmetto bushes and oak trees.  If you like to be alone in the woods and no heavy city population this is the park to come.  Did not got to enjoy the stars because of all the rain from hurricane path.  We never experimented any bad winds during this Hurricane situation and the rain went so well for our taste of resting before heading back to our 7 hour trip back home.  And yes looking forward to come again but will try other better sites for our fifth wheel now I know which they are. 

Smaller quiet wilderness campground

This trip, we stayed 2 nights in space 25. It is convenient to the bath house (which is among the cleanest we've ever seen) and has plenty room for our 28' trailer. All of the spaces are very close to their neighbors, some are too close. This park is the tightest Fl State Park in our experience. The road among the sites and the sites are all dirt but level to the eye. Only the handicap space has a concrete pad (#23). The river makes the experience. Boat ramp and swimming area. Fishing. Rental kayaks. Bicycling. Hiking. Mild climate except for late summer heat. 

Beautiful oaks and the famous white Squirrels

Camped here for two weeks in July of 2019. Very nice clean campground. Boasts a herd of dappled deer and white squirrels. Not albino but white with a small patch of gray on top of their head. Supposedly brought here by a gypsie from Spain.they were trapped on a game preserve smuggled here by said gypsie. They are not found anywhere but the park area. Very good fishing and a very relaxing place.

Great camping g on the forgotten coast

I love this place.  It’s located in a unmolested part of Florida. Clean bathrooms and friendly staff. We tent camped and had 3 tents on one spot without feeling cramped. 

 Very family friendly. 




Very nice campground 

My site was part of a cluster of sites suitable for bigger rigs, enough room to maneuver into even though the park has very tight dirt roads. Site has partial shade but is open to the others around it.  Would be good for buddy site.  Each site has what appears to be hammock clothes line and hammock poles.  ATT was consistent with 2 bars LTE 

Beautiful quiet place.

We had site #29, which was at the end of the loop and near the road and dumpster, but it was nice in that you don't really have neighbors at that spot. 

We looked and looked but we never saw the white deer or the white squirrels. 

Beautiful campground and park with nice walking trails and water views. Nice free hot showers. 

Good cell reception. 

Sites have power and water and there is a dump station near the entrance.  

With taxes and fees it came to about $30/night. 

Beautiful and Quiet

It was the last weekend in July still hotter than hot at night. Great location next to the water for quick fishing, kayaking, skidooing, canoeing but the biting flies and mosquitos were a terror. It would have be nice if the area was sprayed. Every site was full and my neighbors were loud and up all night past the quiet hours - no sleep but still glad I had the time to go. Great site overall

Busy Week for campers! No rest

Small 30 sites on a little loop. The sites are close together with one bathroom. Boat launches. Beautiful trees and walking/hiking paths.

Quiet small campground, clean and nice amenities, good park. Our site was very private. Overall great Florida state park campground.

Nice boat ramp and fantastic scenery on the river. Check your site size to ensure your vehicle will fit because they are all different. Otherwise, really nice park. Lots of wildlife, hot showers, beautiful trail along the river with convenient access behind most sites or via campfire circle for all. Very quiet. 

Wildlife, boat access and scenery 

I live near Ochlockonee River SP and I really enjoy it for day use and camping. Camp sites are indeed close and some sites might be hard for trailers, campers, or RVs but I have no problems with my SUV and tent. Is it miserable in April - September? I wouldn’t know because I stay far away from forests in the Florida summer! You will certainly experience mosquitoes and deer flies if you do go in the warmer months, which isn’t the park’s fault but be warned. I love the Ochlockonee River - it’s very serene. There is a boat ramp and fishing spots as well as a campfire circle, benches along trails, and places to walk along the river. The flatwoods trail is often very wet and you may need at least knee-high boots to get through it. I usually bring tall water boots everywhere but I can see how it’d be disappointing if you didn’t have any on you and couldn’t hike far! There are indeed white squirrels and deer, and lots of deer in general! Bathrooms were pretty clean and everything was functional. They also have a little library with books to read! They have a dumpster and dump station for holding tanks. I had good phone and LTE service as a Verizon user. Sopchoppy is indeed basically non-existent. It has gas but come prepared with other essentials. No major complaints about the park other than it’s a little small! Love it though!
