Best Campgrounds near Royal Palm Beach, FL

Camping options within an hour of Royal Palm Beach, Florida range from developed state parks to unique specialty sites. Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound offers two distinct campgrounds: Pine Grove near the entrance with spacious RV-friendly sites, and the more rustic River Campground along the Loxahatchee River. John Prince Park Campground in Lake Worth provides waterfront sites with power and water hookups just 5 miles from the beach. Specialty accommodations include West Palm Beach-Lion Country Safari KOA with glamping options and Peanut Island Campground, accessible only by boat. Several campgrounds feature full hookups for RVs while primitive tent camping can be found at J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area.

Seasonal considerations significantly impact the camping experience in this subtropical region. Summer months (May-September) bring intense heat, humidity, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F. Insects, particularly mosquitoes and no-see-ums, become problematic during this period. As one camper noted about Jonathan Dickinson State Park, "The bugs are pretty bad. Bring your OFF and screened shelters. No-see-ums were bad in the evening, and flies were plenty all day." Winter (November-March) offers more comfortable temperatures in the 70s-80s°F with lower humidity and fewer insects, making it the preferred camping season. Most campgrounds remain open year-round, though reservations become essential during the winter months when northern visitors arrive.

Water access represents a defining feature of many campgrounds in the area. John Prince Park offers lakefront sites with fishing and paddling opportunities on Lake Osborne. According to one visitor, "The short term camping spots have the best views and most are situated on the lake." Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with campers frequently reporting alligator sightings from a safe distance. At St. Lucie South, one camper reported, "We saw a 3-5 foot alligator trolling around just off our site." Proximity to urban amenities varies widely between campgrounds, with some offering a secluded natural experience while others provide convenient access to beaches, shopping, and restaurants. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the region, with most campgrounds reporting good coverage from major carriers.

    Topeekeegee Yugnee Park Campground

    Great Park

Clean park friendly staff. Great amenities. There are not many downsides two that I want to discuss. The campground does sit next to a train track i believe its a commuter line so there is an early train 4am which is startling. Other downside is park closes at 8, you can still enter through the exit gate until midnight and then have to call security to get in/out.

    Markham Park Campground

A Great Stay at Markham Park!

I stayed at Markham Park on July 28 and had a wonderful experience. The campground is well-maintained, peaceful, and offers plenty of space between sites, giving a nice sense of privacy. The park itself is beautiful, with lots of shaded areas, clean facilities, and easy access to nature trails, bike paths, and water activities.

What I loved most was how much there is to do right on site—whether you enjoy kayaking, fishing, mountain biking, or just relaxing by your campsite, this park has it all. The staff was friendly and helpful, and check-in was quick and easy.

Overall, Markham Park is a perfect spot for a quick getaway or a longer camping trip. I’ll definitely be coming back!

    Pahokee Marina & Campground

    Stunning Views, But Needs Improvements

This campground offers one of the best lakefront views in all of Florida—truly a hidden gem if you’re looking to camp right on the water. The sunsets over Lake Okeechobee are absolutely breathtaking and unlike anywhere else in the state.

The campground does include a pool, which is a nice touch, but unfortunately the amenities are quite limited. The office is closed on Sundays, so plan ahead if you need assistance or have questions during your stay.

The biggest downside was the condition of the restrooms—they were in very poor shape and had a strong, unpleasant odor. This definitely impacted the overall experience.

With a little maintenance and more attention to guest services, this place could easily be a five-star destination. For now, come for the view, but manage your expectations for everything else.

Pine Grove Campground — Jonathan Dickinson State Park

Nice place but lack of shade

The campground is amazing, but due to not having many trees we don’t have shade in the campsites. Just one another have trees, unfortunately. Coming in the summer was a bit tough staying here without an RV with air conditioning. Despite that, everything amazing! Bathrooms super clean, campsites in perfect conditions and so on. Another good thing is that it is close to the city with a huge Publix nearby.

    Ocean Breeze Resort

    Taylor Made for Train Enthusiasts

The campsite is right by the train tracks to Miami, and it feels like the train is barreling through your van. This goes on all night, thanks to a few railroad crossings with plenty of honking!

    DuPuis Campground

Can't fail with a free camping site

FREE stay, register at the SFWMD site and request a permit. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table. Various trees at the camp sites to provide shade. First come first serve. Two cars, two tents, 6 people max per camp site. The sites surround a pond. I didn't use the compost toilet so I don't have an opinion. I couldn't locate the faucet, but supposedly there is one. You need the code for the combination lock to open the gate which is included with the permit. There is a short trail spur maintained by the FTA that connects the family campground to loop 1. Supposedly you are able to take a shower at the equestrian campsite down the road. Will definitely stay again.
