Equestrian camping near Royal Palm Beach, Florida provides access to extensive trail systems across multiple wildlife management areas. The region contains over 60,000 acres of conservation land with varying levels of development and amenities for horse riders. Winter temperatures average between 60-75°F, making December through April the most comfortable period for trail riding and overnight camping.
What to do
Trail riding at DuPuis Campground: The property features a network of multi-use trails through pine flatwoods and cypress domes, allowing for day-long riding excursions. A camper notes, "FREE stay, register at the SFWMD site and request a permit. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table. Various trees at the camp sites provide shade" (DuPuis Campground).
Kayaking from Pine Grove: Access the Loxahatchee River directly from the campground for paddling through cypress forests. "Great site for a day trip or a weekend. Lots of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Conveniently located but feels like miles away from civilization. Stretches from the ocean to outer areas," explains Jennifer L. (Pine Grove Campground — Jonathan Dickinson State Park).
Hiking Hobe Mountain: The observation tower provides panoramic views of surrounding wetlands and coastal areas. "The park is beautiful, must climb Hobe Mountain, the views are stunning. From there you can see both the intracoastal waterway and the Atlantic Ocean in one direction and sand dunes every other direction," recommends Karen.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: The natural vegetation creates separation between camping areas. Laura M. reports, "Was pleasantly surprised that the scrub around the sites is tall making sites more private than the view from Google. This park has paved loops with gravel pads, fire pits, BBQ, tables, playground and much to offer in terms of hiking, biking and boating/kayaking."
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Early mornings often reveal deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species. "We've seen otter, tortoise, birds, eagles so far. Nice sites in two campgrounds. We're in River CG, more shade, a few paved sites but most are dirt/mud," shares janet H.
Primitive camping experience: J.W. Corbett WMA offers undeveloped sites for those seeking a more rustic experience. Lisa C. states, "Although this area doesn't have full hookups, it does provide plenty of room to camp, hike, nature view and hunting plus more!" (J. W. Corbett WMA Primitive Camp).
What you should know
Seasonal popularity affects availability: Winter months see significant increases in visitation. "Make your reservations early as it books up a year ahead of time," advises Edward R. about Jonathan Dickinson State Park.
Limited shade at some sites: Summer camping can be challenging without adequate cooling options. Arnaldo N. cautions, "The campground is amazing, but due to not having many trees we don't have shade in the campsites. Just one another have trees, unfortunately. Coming in the summer was a bit tough staying here without an RV with air conditioning."
Reservation system quirks: Direct booking through park services may provide better site selection. Brian M. warns, "One warning if you reserve through toll free service there is a $6 charge and they put me in a terrible spot. Ranger claimed only a few others available, but it was July and almost empty."
Tips for camping with families
Select Shady Pines for tent camping: This section offers more private sites with better shade coverage. "Shady Pines Camp area is best for tenters, with several tent only sites. The sites aren't large but fairly private due to foliage. It's only a short walk to the beach from there," recommends Jennifer L.
Bring adequate insect protection: Mosquitoes can be intense, particularly near water features. One camper recalls, "Forgot my fan and almost eaten alive saved by Off."
Consider bike rentals: Many trails are suitable for children and beginners. "We love the mountain biking trails. Perfect for all levels and ages," shares Edward R. about activities at Jonathan Dickinson State Park.
Tips from RVers
Cell reception information: Connectivity remains reliable throughout most developed campgrounds. Laura M. confirms, "Good cell reception with AT&T and Verizon" at Pine Grove Campground.
Campground section selection: The Pine Grove area offers better accommodations for larger vehicles. "The Pine Grove CG close to entrance, more spacious, not much shade, paved and nice gravel sites," notes janet H. (Jonathan Dickinson State Park).
Local supply access: Essential services remain accessible without long drives. "Another good thing is that it is close to the city with a huge Publix nearby," mentions Arnaldo N., highlighting the convenience of restocking supplies during extended stays.
