Gypsum Campground is located along the Eagle River and is readily accessible from Interstate Highway 70. The campground is open May 15 - November 15 annually. There is no reservation system. Campsites are occupied on a first come, first serve basis. Inactive volcanic crater and lava flow are nearby to Dotsero. Visitors who want to enjoy camping, picnicking, sightseeing, and wildlife viewing can access the river from the campground, which offers gravel roads with primitive walk in fishing and camping. Wildlife includes ducks, geese, blue heron, bald eagles and other raptors. Recreation activities in the area includes rafting and fishing. Gypsum Campground

So we arrived late in the evening after driving the first leg of a road trip. There weren't a ton of spots open, in fact we might have gotten the last one. It was a gravel road leading to the sites but there was a restroom at the beginning of it. Sites were close together but we were just there for a night. The views were nice if you were looking at the river. The other direction was the highway. Obvious noise from the highway. Mostly just sage brush. I don't remember much for trees. There was a picnic table and at least a fire ring. May have also been a grill. We were close enough to our neighbors that it put our dog on high alert in the early AM since they rose early and made some rustling noises.

There are 8 sites, mostly level, and a few day use sites next to the Eagle River.

This campground is close to I-70 which makes it convenient for day trips. In our case, it was a great place to camp because we were very tired but quite a bit of traffic noise. However, the noise wasn't enough to keep me from sleeping.

There are two vault toilets that haven't been serviced for a quite a while. Neither toilet had toilet paper. The floors weren't too dirty but I wouldn't want to go in with no shoes.

Eagle River Rec Area

 Easy access. Clean bathrooms. Fire ring and picnic table. Lots of road noise from I-70 but good access for biking, hiking, and fishing.  Great BLM campground. 

Nice campground

If you are looking for a place to set up that is close to fishing this is your spot. There are a couple sites that are right by the river and a very short walk to wet your hook.

Yes the road noise is noticeable but it's unbearable. I would say just try to find one of the sites closer to the river verses the road.

I don't recall seeing a water faucet but did see one sight with power hook-up. Did it work? I haven't a clue. Only 2 other campers when I set up camp and both were in smaller RV's. Fire rings, picnic table and a fairly level site. Pit toilets that were bearable.

Great site for fishing and cheap

Great place to stop if you are taking highway 70! It’s right off the highway but still has great nature. Very desert like. Hot during the day and cold at night (we went beginning of June 2020). A little creek is nearby and a couple trails near the entrance. The site is self pay you ($10) just fill out the slip and put it in the post at the entrance once you find a spot. Each site has a fire ring and a picnic table. There’s a bathroom and trash near the entrance. The bathroom is a little gross but that’s expected lol. We got a hole in our air mattress so be careful! The ground was a little rough at our site but it was cool. The scenery is beautiful! Enjoy! ⛺️

Tent Camping

This is a last resort campground. It is on the side of the highway, no shade except by the river, and the sites are right on top of each other. There are only 6 sites. 

  

There is easy river access so if you are looking for just a spot to stop overnight or to cool down by the river this would be fine. But I wouldn't use this location as a get away destination.

  

The bathroom is disgusting and the trash was overflowing when I stopped here. I don’t know how often this spot is patrolled or cared for.

  

There is a rafting guide company that comes through every couple of hours during the day to put in or take out of the river. They park their buses under the only shady spots in the extended pull out to keep them cool. I don't blame them, this location gets hot.

Dirty and Next to the Highway but Good River Access

this campground is right off of I70 making it a super easy overnight stop on my way west. there is definitely traffic noise. sites are pretty on top of each other.  facing away from the road is a very nice view to take in so it's not all bad. there are ~8 campsites all with fire rings and picnic tables, some shaded others not.

Beautiful

Looks like the day area is just closed but there are two gates open leading into the campground and othered were there while I was. Only stayed for a night but it was peaceful. Sites are small and not much privacy now with the burnt vegetation. Vault toilets were clean and has a trash dumpster. Definitely hear highway noise so I wouldn’t recommend for rent campers as it gets pretty loud at times. Had great AT&amp;T cell service to work remotely. I’d say again but not sure it’s worth a weeks stay at $10/night. 

Campground is open 

Quick stop near I70. We arrived late at night, ~9pm, got probably last spot. A lot of space for a car and tent, very private areas. This campsite offers quite spectacular views in the morning compensate a bit noise from the road.

Good for a night close to I70

This is a great stop for a night. The campground is right on the river which is very nice but it's right on 70 so the road noise is pretty loud all night. Coming from a city that's not a huge deal for me. We had cell reception, dumpster and vault toilets available
