Solo Camping

I am here in California getting ready to leave the state by FY22 and had to get outside. I have been exploring the idea of going camping and decided to go this weekend. I stayed a half mile down from the main camping area. Setup my tent on the back of my truck and enjoyed the scenery. It was…

Quiet desert spot

Pleasantly surprised by the well maintained spots, cleanliness and very quiet. We just stopped for a night while passing through. Easy to find and get to. My son loved all the rocks for his RC crawler.

Quiet & Safe

We decided on this campground because it was nearby when we felt we needed to setup camp for the night on our drive from L.A. to Vegas after spending the day at Universal. We’ve stayed at 4 other free camping areas during our roadtrip so far and this is my favorite. Sure it doesn’t provide creeks…

Nice stopover place

We were only here one night but we had a nice stay. We left the windows open since it was great evening weather. The freeway noise was there but it didn’t keep us up. We had full hookups and check-in was easy. Our near-end site was great for our dogs since no one was booked at the end so we had…

One of my favs

I love this place so much. It’s far enough from town to have an amazing but close to a gas station if needed.

Not a ton of traffic at night. Sadly this place was victim of the recent fire and a lot of the awesome Joshua trees are black and look dead. I still love it.

Awesome camp site

This is a great spot. The drive here can be a bit rough if you come down cedar canyon. Cedar canyon and black canyon roads are full of washboard spots that makes for a bumpy ride.

No water or cell service at this site. They do have bathrooms. You do need to pay per night but they had no pencil or…

This is free??

How awesome! Covered picnic tables. Nice big fire pits with grate for cooking. Playground, trails and boulders to climb. Nice stop between Joshua Tree and Sequoia. And it's FREE! Well, for now anyway. I showed up late at night and was the only camper but all the others' trash was left behind.…

Just when you think there won't be anything...along comes Afton Canyon

As I travel, I really have no set destination.  Something will pop up.  As I left Tucson early that day, I started getting tired, and there wasn't much.  When suddenly, Afton Canyon pops up.  After 4 miles of 'fun' gravel, I arrived...and was the ONLY one here.  It was pretty darn warm (hot), but…

  • An overview of the entrance, after about 4 miles of gravel road. Not a soul to be seen....
  • Hello.....only a few came
  • As you can see....you can get right next to them....POWERFUL!!

Desert solitude

I stayed 1 night (5/7/21) in a roof top tent on my Jeep. I didn’t see anyone else at any of the other sites that I checked out & only had one vehicle drive by in the morning as I was packing up. Very quiet & peaceful, though it was quite windy throughout the night. Lots of burnt Joshua…

Been coming here since I was a kid!

Absolutely love Calico and Ghost Town! There’s something for everyone. Explore the caves and tunnels, ride off road, visit the ghost town and shops or just hang around the campfire. I always look forward to our annual trips!

Diamond in the Desert

Incredible spot. The coordinates from this page took me right to what I think was the best campsite, although there were several more further up the road. A couple sites have big jumbo rocks, which were great wind protection and perfect to climb up on to watch the sunset. Lots of beautiful joshua…

Worth the visit

We stayed in one of the tiny cabins on the campground. This place was so much fun for my three little boys! The ghost town is right up the hill. It was extremely windy the day we arrived but we still explored. We will be coming back! Next time we will plan on walking the trails, too! I loved…

We shall return

Long road in need of grading. Glad we stuck with it once we arrived. Privacy, fire rings, standing grills, table, but most importantly quiet. A few sites have fantastic views. No running water, so we brought our own. The pit toilets are very clean. We preferred this to Hole in the Wall down…

Small but Scenic Desert Campground

As other reviewers mentioned, most of the campground is tucked into a narrow sort of canyon just below the Ghost Town. Sites are tightly packed and simple but the proximity to the ghost town, nearby OHV trails, and the ability to walk up out of the canyon for views make this a great spot. There’s…

Great place for astrophotography

Main Amboy Crater Parking Lot does not allow overnight camping, but their overflow parking area does. Overflow parking is asphalt but has dirt edges you can pitch a tent on. Otherwise, there were dirt areas we camped at. Gets crowded during new moon weekends, and can get windy.
