Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Orleans, MA

Nickerson State Park Campground allows pets throughout its wooded campsites and extensive hiking trails. Campers can bring dogs to tent sites, RV areas with hookups, and cabin accommodations within this 1,900-acre park. Park rangers should enforce the leash rules more consistently as multiple visitors report dogs running off-leash despite regulations. The campground provides pet-friendly amenities across its seven camping loops, with sites spaced far enough apart to minimize dog-to-dog interactions. Sweetwater Forest and Shady Knoll Campground also welcome pets, with the latter offering 80 designated sites where dogs are permitted. Most Cape Cod campgrounds maintain standard leash requirements, though specific pet policies vary by location. None of the campgrounds charge additional pet fees, but all require owners to clean up after their animals.

Dogs can swim at designated areas of the kettle ponds within Nickerson, though pets are prohibited from the main swimming beaches. The Cape Cod Rail Trail runs directly through the park, providing 22 miles of paved paths suitable for walking dogs. Atlantic Oaks Campground in Eastham offers pets access to trails connecting to the Salt Pond Visitors Center. Campers should pack extra water for dogs during summer months when temperatures rise, and be vigilant about tick prevention as the Cape area has significant tick populations. Wildlife encounters are common, with skunks particularly active at Nickerson in evening hours. Veterinary services can be found in nearby Brewster and Orleans, while pet supplies are available at most camp stores or at markets within short driving distance from all campgrounds.

    Pinewood Lodge Campground

    Beautiful

Nice and quiet, here for a 3 night stay. 4 star because there are signs posted No dogs allowed on the road to the beach or other areas in the campground, limits walking. There is a dog park, though.

    Atlantic Oaks Campground

    Nice campground

Fairly large, mostly RV and travel trailer park, we felt right at home in our popup. Check in and out were simple. Sites are large although a little close together. Mostly sandy gravel sites with lots of shade available. There are a few really nice tent sites next to the playground, close to the store, showers, and restrooms.

Facilities were uncrowded and very clean. Camp store was nice with lots of supplies available. Wonderful playground for the kids, big and small. Great little dog park.

The location of this campsite is perfect! Short drive to many of the best beaches on the Cape. Lots to do in the immediate area for families, plenary of restaurant options.

    We will definitely return!

    Pinewood Lodge Campground

    Good Spot

Site was level, staff was awesome. They do have a dog park and plenty of things to do. Didn't like that you have to pay for hot water though.

    Boston/Cape Cod KOA

    Not our favorite KOA

The sites are pretty close and some are not level. It seems that many sites have more than one vehicle at them, making it more congested. The Highlands area is much quieter. Decent dog park & common play areas (horseshoes, ladder ball, cornhole, basketball). Lots for kids to do. We went to Plimoth Plantation about 20 min away but not much else in the area. Management & employees are friendly & helpful.

    Bay View Campground

    Huge campground chockful of amenities

    General: Over 450 sites (tent 20 amp w/e; 30 amp w/e; 30 amp w/e/s; 50 amp w/e/s; 50 amp w/e; 30, 50 or premium seasonal)

Site Quality: Generally good. Sites are gravel. We had originally reserved Site 98 but there was a large rock and tree roots making it challenging to position our van. We were able to move to Site 95 which was much better. Each site has a picnic table and rock firepit. Trees provide some amount of privacy between many sites.

Bath/Shower house: Spotlessly clean. The cleaning schedule indicates it is cleaned three times daily.

    Activities/Amenities:

*Some are seasonal and were closed when we were there in October. These include three pools, a food truck, coffee, and ice cream.

    * Others include a pristine laundry room (but you have to purchase a laundry card, so one load is a minimum of $10), shuffleboard, playground, tennis/pickleball, volleyball, basketball, horseshoe pit, soccer and baseball fields, firewood and propane fill, free cable and WiFi, dog park. I’ve probably forgotten a few but you get the idea…

We chose this campground because of its proximity to the Woods Hole ferry terminal. It is not our typical preferred campground but for one night in the off-season, it was very pleasant. It is billed as a family-friendly campground, and I imagine it would be very different during high season. We gladly forgo seasonal amenities for a quieter stay. The staff was very present and welcoming. Note that it is located on a busy highway and if you are approaching from the south, the turn into the campground is hair-raising! There is some road noise at some sites but not for most of them.

    Marthas Vineyard Family Campground

    Peaceful Stay on Martha’s Vineyard

Great stay at the only campground on Martha’s Vineyard! Immaculate tent sites as well as bath houses, very clean shower and toilet facilities. Camp store is well stocked, including fire wood, and staying here you are close to all of the quaint MV towns…..whether by car, bike rental, or the island bus line that goes by the camp entrance. The ferry to Nantucket is only a few minutes away too for a day excursion! Very personable staff…..be sure to make at least a few minutes each day to pet the campground dogs!!

    Nickerson State Park Campground

    So Much to Do!

Woodsy pet-friendly family camping with easy access to Cape Cod attractions. Our family of four plus one pet enjoyed biking, hiking, and pond swimming during our three night tent stay. Sites are grassy and tree-lined offering some privacy. Bathrooms were clean and showers were warm and spacious. We kept ourselves occupied within the park for most of our stay, but enjoyed venturing out to spend time enjoying the National Seashore, and outstanding sea food joints. Since camping means being close to nature be sure to bring bug spray and be prepared to deal with a bit of sand. In all, this state park made for a fun family outdoor adventure!

    Pinewood Lodge Campground

    Great campground

Great campground for any type of camping, convenient to all kinds of shopping and touristy things, amazing campground staff, nice pond for fishing or swimming, lots of activities and celebrations for every age group. Two dogs parks are a huge benefit for us as well. This is an exceptionally well maintained campground. We’ll be back and would recommend it to anyone

Guide to Orleans

Orleans, Massachusetts camping options offer dense coastal forest settings with sandy soil at elevations near sea level. The area experiences mild summer temperatures typically between 70-85°F, with cool evening temperatures dropping to the 50-60°F range. Most campgrounds around Orleans remain open from May through October, closing during winter months when Cape Cod tourism slows significantly.

What to do

Biking on the Cape Cod Rail Trail: Access the 22-mile paved path directly from Atlantic Oaks Campground in Eastham. "This campground is very nice and comfortable... This campground is also under an hour drive from a lot of places around the Cape and even though very booked up doesn't seem overly crowded," reports Paige R. from Atlantic Oaks Campground.

Swimming in kettle ponds: Explore the unique freshwater swimming options at Cliff Pond near Brewster. "We had a great experience here and loved being able to hike down to Cliff Pond to swim and wander around. As long as you stay clear of the poison ivy, you will have a great time!" advises CL M. from Nickerson State Park Campground.

Beach exploration: Visit the National Seashore beaches within 15-minute drives from most campgrounds. "Great spot. Access to the Cape Cod bike trail @ the campground. Clean facilities... Cape Cod National Seashore minutes away, great restaurants & you must walk the Atlantic White Cedar Swam Trail," suggests Ron C. about the nearby attractions.

What campers like

Quiet camping atmosphere: Many Cape Cod campers appreciate the peaceful environment. "The campground was very conveniently located and the camp sites were not very close together which was a nice difference from the hustle and bustle of Cape Cod," notes David B. about camping experiences.

Proximity to attractions: Being centrally located for exploring the Cape rates highly. "Great location to be able to walk downtown and also bike over to the national park. Staff were friendly and helpful," shares Alyssa R. from Coastal Acres Campground.

Wooded campsites: The forest setting provides welcome shade and privacy. "Sweetwater Forest has pleasant, secluded sites. This was the quietest campground during 'quiet hours' that I've ever visited. Walking my dog late at night or early in the morning was absolutely silent," says Grace M. from Sweetwater Forest.

What you should know

Tick prevention essential: Cape Cod has significant tick populations across all camping areas. "As always I need to do a PSA on ticks: it's Cape Cod, so be vigilant about protecting yourself from ticks. Lyme disease is no joke," warns Gena F.

Campsite size variations: Sites range dramatically in size and privacy levels. "Many sites are small, some require walk-in, and parking may be separate from the site; in some instances it is across or near the site, and for others it is closer to the park entrance," explains Jean C. about Wellfleet Hollow State Campground.

Reservation requirements: Book well ahead, especially for summer months. "This spot fills up quick so reservations well ahead of time are needed," advises Virginia W., emphasizing the popularity of pet friendly camping near Orleans, Massachusetts during peak season.

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and recreational areas: Multiple campgrounds offer dedicated children's facilities. "Lots of programs for kids. Miles of bike paths that connect to many towns on Cape Cod. Beautiful beaches are just down the road from the campground," shares Glenn B.

Swimming options beyond beaches: Freshwater alternatives provide calmer waters for kids. "The clean, freshwater swimming at the kettle ponds (which are usually uncrowded and within less than a minute's walk from our campsite) is incredible," reports Phil Y.

Seasonal timing considerations: Shady Knoll Campground offers less crowded family camping during shoulder seasons. "We stayed 3 nights on site 58. Campground was super clean and well maintained. They allow fires until 11pm. It was very quiet and the staff were very helpful," shares Gabriel H. about their family experience.

Tips from RVers

Water and electric hookups: Most Orleans area campgrounds offer full hookup options. "We had a nice pull through with a view of the pond. Staff were very friendly and helpful," notes Alyssa R. about her RV site.

Site access considerations: Some campgrounds have limitations on RV size. "Kind of close but not a problem for us... Sites are easy to get in and out of," reports Peggy L. regarding the site spacing and accessibility.

Cape Cod RV amenities: Look for campgrounds with dump stations, 50-amp service, and pull-through sites. "We were on site A-31 for 3 nights with full hookup while we checked out Cape Cod. Campground is lovely, with many trees (and birds) and close proximity to the bike trail and town of Brewster," says Kristine B. from Sweetwater Forest.
