Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Castle Rock, CO

Jellystone Park™ at Larkspur accommodates pets across its 415 campsites, offering options for tent camping, RV stays, cabins, glamping, and yurt rentals. The full-service campground maintains pet-friendly policies throughout its extensive amenities, including water parks, activity centers, and recreation areas. Many campers appreciate the spacious sites that provide enough room for pets to relax alongside their families. Multiple bathroom facilities, trash collection points, and dedicated pet exercise areas make extended stays comfortable for four-legged visitors. The campground's location between Denver and Colorado Springs provides convenient access to veterinary services if needed.

Several dispersed camping options near Castle Rock welcome pets without fees. Mount Herman Road Dispersed Camping and Rampart Range Recreation Area both permit pets in their free camping areas with standard national forest leash requirements. These primitive sites lack amenities like running water or waste facilities, so campers must pack appropriate pet supplies and follow leave-no-trace principles for pet waste. Rampart Range's extensive trail system offers excellent dog walking opportunities but becomes heavily trafficked with ATVs during daylight hours, creating potential safety concerns for pets. Buffalo Creek Recreation Area provides another pet-friendly dispersed camping option with toilet facilities and reservable sites, though fires are prohibited in this area. The combination of free camping and established pet policies makes these areas popular weekend destinations for Castle Rock residents seeking quick escapes with their animals.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

Popular and large campground near the lake

As it is very close to the city, the temperature stays consistent with Denver temps. So in the summer, it will not be as cool as some mountain spots. That being said, it is very easy to get to and you’ll have the lake right there to cool off!

Entrance into the state park is about $7/day. There is a dog park within the state park that allows off leash and has some ponds the dogs can swim in. Entrance to the dog park is $2.

    Diamond Campground & RV Park

Large Park Near Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak & More

This park is definitely well visited, but for good reason. It is located in Woodland Park, a lovely mountain town about 30-40 min. outside Colorado Springs. Lots of sites, mostly RV but there is a nice tent only section with a good number of spaces. We stayed overnight in early July and actually pitched our tent next to our family RV underneath the awning, safe from the summer showers that seem to pass thru almost daily in the summer months. Lots of amenities, including parks with play equipment for the kiddos, a dog park, nice bathrooms & showers.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

A piece of nature tucked into the city.

Located in the city, but once you’re in the park you don’t feel like you’re in the city at all!!! The RV spots have full hookups and are nice and spacious, as are the neighbors. We were able to set up a tent too! Great place to stroll and relax. Beautiful sunsets. Clean bathrooms and laundry facilities with a little vending machine.

A great place for camping (RV and tent spots), fishing, wildlife/nature viewing, hiking, boating (all water activities), has a swim beach, marina, off leash dog park, shooting range, horse stables that you can do a beautiful hour horseback ride.

FEES: Campsites $41 full hookup, basic campsite $28, daily park pass is $11, annual park pass $83, daily dog park pass $3, annual dog park pass $25, and group camping is available too.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

    City Camping at it's Best

Great campground here at this state park. We have always stayed in the Arapahoe Group Loop for holiday weekends. Arapahoe Group Loop has a great pavillion with outdoor kitchen and bathroom. Overall Camper amenities are great and very clean. Many well shaded individual sites are available. Campsites are far from other park amenities like Dog Park, Shooting Range, Marina. Swim beach is a 10 minute walk-able distance from campground. Recommend driving to get around the park.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

Super busy but great for dogs

This is a location that you only camp if you literally don't have any worries about being around people. It is ALWAYS packed due to the tons of hiking trails, huge dog park, and water access.

I taught kayaking to little ones here and it was always a fight to get into the park, get to the water, and not get run over by boats and unexperienced (or entitled) people.

The campground is well maintained but it sit really worth being able to be basically in a metropolitan city? For me I'll go somewhere more nature friendly and less crowded.

BUT it is excellent for dogs. We love taking out dogs here because they can play in water, run their hearts out, and hang out with other dogs. It is pricey to get into the park though. $80 for a year pass to the state parks and another $25 for the dog park fees.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

    So much to do!

Chatfield is such a great park; I’ve spent so much time biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, spending time with family; picnics areas are even great to have lunch. The dog park is by far the best. Off leash- so much room; well taken care of and big lake for the dogs to swim. And it’s close to Denver - so we go here weekly!

What to Do

Mountain biking on established trails: Buffalo Creek Recreation Area offers extensive trail networks popular with cyclists. "Great place to spend a day to a few weeks depending on lifestyle. Í live out of my van and met a friend here few sites right off the highway with service. Fire pits and hiking near," notes camper atea J. from Buffalo Creek Recreation Area.

"Beautiful views, ~50 minutes of rocky gravel road to reach the top but doable in any vehicle depending on the weather. What Campers Like

Proximity to Denver metro area: Most dispersed camping areas are accessible within 30-45 minutes from Castle Rock. "This is one of our favorite spots to stay when visiting Denver area. Great for biking and all kinds of water sports. Laundry facility on each loop sites are spread out giving plenty of room between sites," reports Rick at Chatfield State Park Campground.

Spacious campsites: Many sites accommodate multiple vehicles and tents. "We arrived early Friday morning and most spots were already claimed. There are a total of 35 free camp sites but if you continue down 550 there are some paid camp sites as well. Sites were big and far enough away from neighbors," explains Ben B. who stayed at Buffalo Creek Recreation Area.

Established fire rings: Most dispersed sites feature previously used fire rings, though restrictions frequently apply. "We chose site 33 and it was AMAZING! No trail directly near the site, no sites surrounding, we could see the road but from the road the site area was mostly secluded. The camp hosts are so great!" shares Taylor V. who camped at Rampart Range.

What You Should Know

Early arrival crucial on weekends: Sites fill quickly, especially from May through September. "We went up there Sunday and drove around for an hour trying to find a spot. It was so busy with campers and there were dirt bikers everywhere! Sunday evening it cleared up and we were the only ones there mon-tues!" explains Halee E. from Rampart Range Recreation Area.

Vehicle-appropriate camping locations: Some roads require 4WD or high clearance. "The road to the sites is pretty washboarded out but affords access your the sites for both 4x4's and grocery getters alike, RV campers may not be able to find a level, accessible site at this time of year (Mid-March) as the main roads are maintained but the pull offs don't appear to be," advises Monte P. from Mount Herman Road Dispersed Camping.
