Fishing at nearby reservoirs: Anglers can access multiple fishing spots within 30 minutes of Castle Rock camping areas. "The reservoir is beautiful. Dispersed camping is plentiful. Main road is mellow but offshoots offer adventure," states Robert S. who camped at Rampart Range Recreation Area with his family.
Hiking to panoramic viewpoints: Mount Herman area provides access to trails with views spanning from Colorado Springs to Denver. "Beautiful views, ~50 minutes of rocky gravel road to reach the top but doable in any vehicle depending on the weather. Tons of spots and easy to be secluded," reports Logan C. who stayed at Mount Herman Road.
What Campers Like
Proximity to Denver metro area: Most dispersed camping areas are accessible within 30-45 minutes from Castle Rock. "This is one of our favorite spots to stay when visiting Denver area. Great for biking and all kinds of water sports. Laundry facility on each loop sites are spread out giving plenty of room between sites," reports Rick at Chatfield State Park Campground.
Spacious campsites: Many sites accommodate multiple vehicles and tents. "We arrived early Friday morning and most spots were already claimed. There are a total of 35 free camp sites but if you continue down 550 there are some paid camp sites as well. Sites were big and far enough away from neighbors," explains Ben B. who stayed at Buffalo Creek Recreation Area.
Established fire rings: Most dispersed sites feature previously used fire rings, though restrictions frequently apply. "We chose site 33 and it was AMAZING! No trail directly near the site, no sites surrounding, we could see the road but from the road the site area was mostly secluded. The camp hosts are so great!" shares Taylor V. who camped at Rampart Range.
What You Should Know
Early arrival crucial on weekends: Sites fill quickly, especially from May through September. "We went up there Sunday and drove around for an hour trying to find a spot. It was so busy with campers and there were dirt bikers everywhere! Sunday evening it cleared up and we were the only ones there mon-tues!" explains Halee E. from Rampart Range Recreation Area.
Vehicle-appropriate camping locations: Some roads require 4WD or high clearance. "The road to the sites is pretty washboarded out but affords access your the sites for both 4x4's and grocery getters alike, RV campers may not be able to find a level, accessible site at this time of year (Mid-March) as the main roads are maintained but the pull offs don't appear to be," advises Monte P. from Mount Herman Road Dispersed Camping.
