Indian Creek Equestrian Campground sits in Pike National Forest between Castle Rock and Sedalia, Colorado, providing specialized facilities for horse owners. The campground ranges in elevation from 7,200 to 7,800 feet, creating temperature variations even during summer months. Water is available at spigots located near restroom facilities, but campers should bring containers to transport water to their sites and horses.
What to do
Mountain biking trails: Access multiple trail systems directly from Indian Creek campground area. "Indian Creek trail system connects directly to the campground, providing riders immediate access to multiple routes suitable for day rides," though some riders note that "Trail #800 is pretty sketchy these days due to excessive water erosion. 3' deep and 8" wide troughs to walk along with so much overgrowth it's hard to navigate."
Family scavenger hunts: Look for hidden trail decorations on the northern trail routes. "The trail heading North out of the parking lot is great, well maintained and also has hidden 7 dwarfs along the trail to try and find. We did it four times just to make sure we found all 7," one visitor reports.
Fishing opportunities: Cherry Creek State Park Campground provides multiple fishing spots just 30 minutes from Castle Rock. A camper mentioned that "Chatfield is popular for fishing and boating. So many people come out for the weekend so they can get up early with the fish."
What campers like
Wildlife viewing: Keep your eyes open for native Colorado animals. At Peregrine Pines FamCamp, "The wildlife is abundant with many black squirrels and a ton of black bears." Remember to store food properly at all campgrounds in the region.
Varied site privacy: Equestrian sites differ in shade and seclusion. "Sites 1-4 have shade coverage while sites 5-8 are more exposed," and as one camper noted, "Site 1 is the most private but furthest from the bathrooms, Site 2/3 are closest together, Site 3 has the very best flat pad with the table, ring and still room for a 10x10 tent or shade tent area."
Family-friendly facilities: Indian Paintbrush Campground—Bear Creek Lake Park offers multiple recreation options beyond equestrian trails. "Loved the hiking and biking trails. Beautiful lake for swimming and paddle sports. Will definitely be returning for the archery and horseback riding," shared one visitor.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Most equestrian sites require advance booking, especially during summer months. At Colorado Campground, "Sites can be secured on recreation.gov. There are double sites which garner double fees. At the time of this review, sites are $23.00 nightly (a bit pricey for no showers or modern facilities)."
Site selection strategy: Choose sites based on your need for shade and privacy. "What an absolutely beautiful spot. Quiet, clean, great camp host and a really nice/clean vault toilet. Campsite #2 is our favourite and we can't wait to go back!" reports a visitor to the equestrian campground.
Weather preparation: Mountain elevation means temperature fluctuations. At Mueller State Park Campground, campers note: "Very nice quiet stay in the woods. All camp sites are very easy to get to and nicely groomed. Very pleasant stay. Got below freezing so be ready for the cold."
Tips for camping with families
Playgrounds nearby: Several campgrounds offer play areas for children. "There is a new playground that is huge for the kids with a rubber floor in case kids fall. In addition to the park there is tetherballs and open fields for fun ball or frisbee activities," notes a visitor to Peregrine Pines.
Hidden trail features: Children enjoy discovering trail decorations. "The trail heading North out of the parking lot is great, well maintained and also has hidden 7 dwarfs along the trail to try and find. We did it four times just to make sure we found all 7."
Swimming options: Idylease Campground provides easy access to water recreation. "There is a 0.5 mile hike in to the campsite, so plan and pack accordingly," advises one camper, making it important to bring only essential items when camping with children.
Tips from RVers
Size restrictions: Check campground vehicle limits before booking. At Colorado Campground, "No RV/Campers over 36 ft permitted. Parking pads are gravel, a few are pull-through. Sites are non-electric with no hookups."
Water pressure issues: Regulate incoming water at full-hookup sites. "Water pressure here is really strong so make sure you have a water pressure regulator handy," warns a camper at Peregrine Pines FamCamp.
Limited RV sites: Equestrian campgrounds typically have fewer suitable RV spaces. "Indian Creek was pleasant and I would return. Attractive sites available with trees and grass. Most sites are better suited for tents or vans. I was able to fit a 20 ft travel trailer, but there's only a handful of trailer sites."
