Ice Cave Rd Dispersed Site - Pike National Forest

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Ice Cave Rd Dispersed Site, near Pike National Forest, Colorado, is a rugged spot that offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains, particularly Pikes Peak. This location is perfect for those who appreciate the beauty of nature and don’t mind a bit of roughing it, as it’s a free site with no amenities like drinking water or toilets.

Visitors have noted the breathtaking scenery, making it a great backdrop for camping. One camper mentioned, “The views from this site are breathtaking,” which is a sentiment echoed by many who have enjoyed the open space and clear skies. However, be prepared for a bit of a bumpy ride to get there, as the road can be rough in spots.

While the area is generally secluded, some campers have pointed out that it can get noisy due to nearby target shooting. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, you might want to consider that aspect. On the flip side, the lack of tree cover means you’ll have unobstructed views of the night sky, perfect for stargazing.

Keep in mind that this site is a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to cleanliness. Some campers have reported finding trash and debris left behind, so it’s a good idea to bring a trash bag and help keep the area clean. Overall, Ice Cave Rd Dispersed Site is a solid choice for those who want to immerse themselves in nature and enjoy the great outdoors without the frills.

Too many target shooters

Firstly, this site is too exposed for tent campers. Better if you’re in an rv. The better site is to stay on FR 323 to the left and there is a better site about 300 yards further down the road ideal for a tent and shelter with good tree cover. You lose out on the views but have better protection. There are a lot of bugs - horse flies, biting flies and mosquitoes. We set up traps and used repellents and it helped. The problem with this area is too much gunfire. At 7pm on a Tuesday evening just as we sat down to eat a group very close by started target shooting. I’m okay with it during the day but there comes a time when you just need to shut it down. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, this is just not the spot for you. No wildlife of course because of the noise and very few birds. We only go to Rampart Range as it’s very close to Colo Spgs where we live and a quick getaway. There are so many better options than here. We also had to clean up the site. Beer cans and broken bottles all over the place. Some people have no respect for our beautiful state.

Dispersed camping!

While free, it does go without saying that people do leave stuff behind, mainly trash and A LOT of shell casings. Be careful for broken glass as well. But the views…the site I’m at has a beautiful view of Pikes peak! Campsite already had a fire pit built and plenty of wood cut down for a nice fire. Would have given more stars if not for the debris left by previous campers. Also, very secluded as mentioned in other reviews…hardly anyone comes this far out I guess?

Open with good views

Real secluded spot pretty far up rampart road, good amount of trash unfortunately but picked up what I could. Used to be a shooting lookout so watch for glass and shell casings. Not alot of tree cover. RWD accessible.

Spectacular views of Pikes Peak

The views from this site are breathtaking. The site is big enough for multiple tents or a large rv. Someone has built a den next to the firepit. The only downside to camping on Rampart Range is the noise from target shooting which we heard frequently.

The site has no tree cover so make sure you will have clear skies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Ice Cave Road dispersed camping located in Pike National Forest?

Ice Cave Road dispersed camping is located along Rampart Range in Pike National Forest. The site sits at a higher elevation with panoramic mountain views, including spectacular vistas of Pikes Peak. It's situated along Forest Road 323 (Ice Cave Road), which branches off from Rampart Range Road. The location is fairly remote, requiring you to travel quite far up Rampart Road to reach these dispersed sites. The area's elevation and exposed position provide exceptional views but limited natural cover.

What amenities are available at Ice Cave Road dispersed sites?

Ice Cave Road dispersed sites offer very minimal amenities, as is typical with dispersed camping. There are established fire pits at some sites, and you'll find previously cut firewood available in the area. No water, toilets, trash service, or other facilities are provided. Some sites have improvised features like a den structure next to a fire pit. The main appeal is the natural setting and mountain views rather than developed facilities. Be prepared to pack in all necessities and pack out all waste.

Is Ice Cave Creek accessible from the dispersed camping areas?

There is no clear indication that Ice Cave Creek is directly accessible from these dispersed camping areas. The sites are described as being at higher elevation with limited tree cover and exposed positions, which suggests they may not be adjacent to the creek. The camping areas are primarily characterized by their mountain views rather than water features. If water access is important for your trip, consider contacting the Pike National Forest ranger district for specific information about creek accessibility from these sites.

What are the regulations for dispersed camping along Ice Cave Road?

Dispersed camping along Ice Cave Road follows standard Pike National Forest regulations. Camping is free and doesn't require reservations, but stay limits typically apply (usually 14 days within a 30-day period). Campers must practice Leave No Trace principles, pack out all trash, and use existing fire rings when having campfires. Target shooting is permitted in designated areas of the forest, which explains noise that may be heard from camping areas. Fire restrictions may apply seasonally, so check with forest officials before your trip. All vehicles must remain on established roads and cannot create new paths.
