    Pinewood Lodge Campground

    Beautiful

Nice and quiet, here for a 3 night stay. 4 star because there are signs posted No dogs allowed on the road to the beach or other areas in the campground, limits walking. There is a dog park, though.

    Wompatuck State Park Campground

Great spot with Plenty of History

We chose this spot for a family weekend. Sites are spacious. Water from nearby facet. Because it was local and had history behind it. Rhe campground is within a state park and is built on a old military base. You can still see some bunkers with their vents all around the campground. Blue Mountain spring water can be found right near campground for some refreshing water. We brought our chow chows and their was a great harbor side dog park a short drive away along with some swimming. I would visit again.

    Atlantic Oaks Campground

    Nice campground

Fairly large, mostly RV and travel trailer park, we felt right at home in our popup. Check in and out were simple. Sites are large although a little close together. Mostly sandy gravel sites with lots of shade available. There are a few really nice tent sites next to the playground, close to the store, showers, and restrooms.

Facilities were uncrowded and very clean. Camp store was nice with lots of supplies available. Wonderful playground for the kids, big and small. Great little dog park.

The location of this campsite is perfect! Short drive to many of the best beaches on the Cape. Lots to do in the immediate area for families, plenary of restaurant options.

    We will definitely return!

    Pinewood Lodge Campground

    Good Spot

Site was level, staff was awesome. They do have a dog park and plenty of things to do. Didn't like that you have to pay for hot water though.

    Boston/Cape Cod KOA

    Not our favorite KOA

The sites are pretty close and some are not level. It seems that many sites have more than one vehicle at them, making it more congested. The Highlands area is much quieter. Decent dog park & common play areas (horseshoes, ladder ball, cornhole, basketball). Lots for kids to do. We went to Plimoth Plantation about 20 min away but not much else in the area. Management & employees are friendly & helpful.

    Bay View Campground

    Huge campground chockful of amenities

    General: Over 450 sites (tent 20 amp w/e; 30 amp w/e; 30 amp w/e/s; 50 amp w/e/s; 50 amp w/e; 30, 50 or premium seasonal)

Site Quality: Generally good. Sites are gravel. We had originally reserved Site 98 but there was a large rock and tree roots making it challenging to position our van. We were able to move to Site 95 which was much better. Each site has a picnic table and rock firepit. Trees provide some amount of privacy between many sites.

Bath/Shower house: Spotlessly clean. The cleaning schedule indicates it is cleaned three times daily.

    Activities/Amenities:

*Some are seasonal and were closed when we were there in October. These include three pools, a food truck, coffee, and ice cream.

    * Others include a pristine laundry room (but you have to purchase a laundry card, so one load is a minimum of $10), shuffleboard, playground, tennis/pickleball, volleyball, basketball, horseshoe pit, soccer and baseball fields, firewood and propane fill, free cable and WiFi, dog park. I’ve probably forgotten a few but you get the idea…

We chose this campground because of its proximity to the Woods Hole ferry terminal. It is not our typical preferred campground but for one night in the off-season, it was very pleasant. It is billed as a family-friendly campground, and I imagine it would be very different during high season. We gladly forgo seasonal amenities for a quieter stay. The staff was very present and welcoming. Note that it is located on a busy highway and if you are approaching from the south, the turn into the campground is hair-raising! There is some road noise at some sites but not for most of them.

    Marthas Vineyard Family Campground

    Peaceful Stay on Martha’s Vineyard

Great stay at the only campground on Martha’s Vineyard! Immaculate tent sites as well as bath houses, very clean shower and toilet facilities. Camp store is well stocked, including fire wood, and staying here you are close to all of the quaint MV towns…..whether by car, bike rental, or the island bus line that goes by the camp entrance. The ferry to Nantucket is only a few minutes away too for a day excursion! Very personable staff…..be sure to make at least a few minutes each day to pet the campground dogs!!

    Nickerson State Park Campground

    So Much to Do!

Woodsy pet-friendly family camping with easy access to Cape Cod attractions. Our family of four plus one pet enjoyed biking, hiking, and pond swimming during our three night tent stay. Sites are grassy and tree-lined offering some privacy. Bathrooms were clean and showers were warm and spacious. We kept ourselves occupied within the park for most of our stay, but enjoyed venturing out to spend time enjoying the National Seashore, and outstanding sea food joints. Since camping means being close to nature be sure to bring bug spray and be prepared to deal with a bit of sand. In all, this state park made for a fun family outdoor adventure!

Guide to Truro

Truro, Massachusetts sits between the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Cod Bay with sandy soil and pine forests characteristic of the Outer Cape region. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F while spring and fall can bring unpredictable weather with occasional fog and wind. Most campgrounds in the area operate seasonally from May through October with peak season in July and August requiring reservations well in advance.

What to do

Beach exploration: Wellfleet Hollow State Campground provides access to nearby Duck Pond for swimming opportunities. "We've been camping at Wellfleet Hollow for close to thirty years. We love its location in the funky, artsy town of Wellfleet where there are great food options and some of the best beaches on Cape Cod. It's also walking distance to the secluded Duck Pond which is a gem," notes Tom C.

Biking: The Cape Cod Rail Trail connects to several campgrounds in the area. Atlantic Oaks Campground offers direct access to this popular trail. "Access to the Cape Cod bike trail @ the campground. Clean facilities," writes Ron C. The trail extends for 22 miles through several Cape towns, making it ideal for day trips with pets.

Stargazing: The outer Cape offers excellent night sky viewing opportunities. "At night you can go out to the power lines for some of the best star gazing on the East Coast," mentions a Wellfleet Hollow camper. Light pollution is minimal compared to more developed areas, especially during off-season stays.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Sweetwater Forest in Brewster is noted for its secluded camping spots. "We were on site B17 and it was perfect. Complete 360 privacy, well wooded, and just what was needed. Listen to the sounds of frogs at night was kinda awesome," shares Christina M. Many campers appreciate the natural setting.

Hot showers: Most campgrounds in the region maintain clean shower facilities. "Unlimited (and FREE) hot showers can be found in area 2 of the park," notes a Nickerson State Park visitor. Shady Knoll Campground receives particular praise: "Private unisex showers were very clean and had great water pressure/temperature," according to Alana S.

Convenient location: Campgrounds near Truro provide strategic access to Cape attractions. "Great location, close proximity to the beach. Easy to book," writes Alessia D. about Adventure Bound Cape Cod. Most pet-friendly camping options sit within 5-10 miles of major beaches and towns.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Peak season requires advance planning. "This spot fills up FAST in the summer so a reservation is usually smart," advises a camper about Nickerson State Park Campground. For July and August stays, book 6-9 months in advance for best site selection.

Site spacing varies: Campgrounds differ significantly in site size and privacy. "The sites are pretty small and close together but there was good foliage between sites to lend a little privacy," notes Alana S. about Shady Knoll. Sites at Dunes Edge Campground "are pretty small and most have very little to no privacy."

Fire restrictions: Not all campgrounds permit open fires. "No fires allowed," notes Mike R. about Dunes Edge Campground. Where fires are permitted, most campgrounds require purchasing wood on-site to prevent spreading invasive insects.

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and recreation: Several campgrounds offer kid-friendly amenities. "There's an arcade, playground, basketball court and arcade," mentions Kelly R. about Sweetwater Forest. Coastal Acres Campground offers convenient access to town activities: "Less than 10 minute walk to downtown Provincetown, and an extremely safe, enjoyable walk. You cannot beat the access to one of the best towns in the world," states Gianna.

Wildlife viewing: Kids enjoy observing local animals. "Wild turkeys moved through camp during my visit," reports a Wellfleet Hollow camper. Wildlife sightings commonly include birds, small mammals, and occasional visits from turkeys or deer, especially in less developed campgrounds.

Water activities: Freshwater ponds offer alternatives to ocean beaches. "The clean, freshwater swimming at the kettle ponds (which are usually uncrowded and within less than a minute's walk from our campsite) is incredible," shares Phil Y. about Nickerson State Park. These ponds typically have gentler swimming conditions than ocean beaches.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: RV campers should research site specifications carefully. "Sites are easy to get in and out of. Kind of close but not a problem for us," notes Peggy L. about Coastal Acres. Many campgrounds have limited full hookup sites that book quickly.

Accessibility challenges: Some campgrounds have terrain considerations. "Sharp turns required to get into sites," warns Ron C. about Dunes Edge Campground. Adventure Bound Cape Cod receives mixed reviews for larger rigs: "The roads are narrow and with curves...they limit campers to tents and short trailers/campers only, with length <15' and only 1 unit/vehicle per site."

Amenities: Full hookup sites vary by location. "We paid $113 per night plus fees for a FHU 50 Amp Pull-thru site," reports Matt S. about Atlantic Oaks. Many campgrounds offer electric and water but more limited sewer connections, requiring use of dump stations.
