Dixon Lake Campground offers tent sites, RV spaces, and cabins in a setting with elevation changes and lake views 15 minutes north of downtown Escondido. Many sites at the campground provide seclusion with natural vegetation separating camping areas. Summer temperatures often exceed 90°F, requiring extra hydration and shade planning for campers, especially at sites in the 40-series that lack natural shade.
What to do
Fishing at Lake Jennings: Lake Jennings allows fishing from shore or rental boats, with no California fishing license needed at some locations. "Great views in the camping area. Bonus: No CA fishing license needed! Just the lake permit of $7 per adult. Big fish in this lake," reports Dad & B R.
Hike nearby trails: Trail access from various campgrounds provides opportunities to spot local wildlife. "We come here to hike all the time, our dog especially loves this trail! The campsites looks dispersed and absolutely beautiful! The views are worth taking in," notes Taylor about Dixon Lake.
Observatory visit: Plan a day trip to the Palomar Observatory from nearby campgrounds. "You could spend a week there and see something new everyday. Lots of nature to see. Paloma observatory is relatively near and can drive for some space exploration," mentions Susie F. about camping in the area.
What campers like
Secluded lake view sites: Many campers appreciate the privacy at certain campsites. "Nice, well maintained sites. Very well taken care of. They clean the fire pits out etc. Some of the 40 series sites are very secluded and have excellent lake views," writes Steve about Dixon Lake.
Hot showers without quarters: Guajome Regional Park offers clean facilities for campers. "For the price of full hook up ($35) in a location so close to the beach, I call it a win. It was beautiful with a pond and walking paths. The bathrooms/showers were clean and didn't stink," shares Stephanie W.
Forested settings: Some campgrounds offer full tree cover. "I love love love this campsite. It's so beautiful to be covered completely by the trees! It makes me feel like I'm in an actual Forrest and not the middle of San Diego," says Taylor about Woods Valley Kampground.
What you should know
Heat management: Summer camping requires preparation for high temperatures. "The only thing I would have done differently was go during the cooler months. Overall decent experience," notes Justin T. about his Dixon Lake experience.
Wildlife awareness: Prepare for wildlife encounters at dog-friendly campgrounds near Escondido. "Warning: Beware the Poison Oak. If you're hitting the trails or fishing the bank, there's a lot of it," warns Dad & B R. from Lake Jennings.
Fire restrictions: Some campgrounds limit fire options. "I've camped here only once in the last few years because not being able to have a camp fire really takes away from camping to me," explains Kristian B. about Dos Picos County Park.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. "The kids all love fishing at the pond on site. Plenty of space between campgrounds. No issues with hook-ups or amenities. Pool was still closed due to COVID restrictions but looked clean," reports David T. about Woods Valley Kampground.
Cottage options: For families wanting more comfort at dog-friendly campgrounds near Escondido, cottages provide an alternative. "We stayed in site 91 for 4 nights from Monday to Thursday night while the campground was pretty empty. I imagine it would be a little louder when it's at full capacity, but we had no noise issues from fellow campers," shares Moriah M. about Lake Jennings.
Educational opportunities: Family activities include nature walks and learning experiences. "There is a tranquil pond, nice hiking trails, places for kids to play…. Just a fantastic option close to home for locals and well worth consideration for visitors to the area," mentions Wes L. about Dos Picos County Park.
Tips from RVers
Leveling needs: Some sites require significant adjustment. "We could reach the shore at the campground while camping WITHOUT our dog. Beautiful, grandiose views. Some sites need much leveling. I know which site to reserve next time!!" advises Jessica M. about Lake Jennings.
Site selection strategy: Escondido RV Resort offers various site options with differing privacy levels. "Space 49 is small. The park is hilly. They didn't give us the right spot we needed when we made our reservations. They have a very nice staff and is dog friendly," notes Elaine R.
Dump station access: Plan accordingly for waste disposal. "You have to drive to the RV dump to dump. It's close but you don't have the convenience to dump at your site. There are park rangers available. It's a good place for kids to run around," explains Linda R. about camping in the area.
