Best Campgrounds near Salome, AZ

Camping options around Salome, Arizona range from developed RV parks to primitive dispersed sites on public lands. The Salome KOA provides full hookups with amenities including showers, toilets, and water, making it suitable for both tent and RV camping. On the outskirts of town, Vicksburg Pit Road offers free BLM dispersed camping with minimal facilities, appealing to those seeking a more rustic experience. Several mixed-use campgrounds like Centennial Park accommodate both tent and RV campers, providing electric hookups and basic facilities within reasonable proximity to town services.

Desert climate conditions dominate the camping experience near Salome, with extreme heat during summer months making spring and fall the optimal camping seasons. "We came from the west on 10 and exited on Salome road - it was all dirt. But if you come from the east to courthouse road it's paved," noted one visitor regarding access to nearby BLM lands. Road quality varies significantly, with many dispersed camping areas requiring high-clearance vehicles and sometimes 4WD capability. Cell service is generally reliable near established campgrounds but becomes spotty in more remote areas. The 14-day stay limit applies to most BLM dispersed camping opportunities in the region, while developed campgrounds typically offer extended stay options for seasonal visitors.

Campers frequently mention the spectacular desert sunsets and star-gazing opportunities as highlights of the Salome area camping experience. Several RV parks cater specifically to winter visitors, with the population swelling during cooler months as seasonal travelers seek relief from northern climates. According to reviews, "The views of the mountains are nice here! Right off the highway, there is lots of noise." This reflects the common trade-off between convenience and solitude in the region. Most developed campgrounds provide water hookups and electric service, addressing the critical need for cooling during warmer periods. The surrounding landscape offers opportunities for desert hiking, wildlife viewing, and photography, with nearby mountains providing scenic backdrops to camping sites. ATV and off-road enthusiasts will find extensive trail networks accessible from many camping areas.

    Saddle Mountain BLM (Tonopah, AZ)

    marginal rough blm camping

not a big fan of this area, way too many lights from power utilities, steady stream of traffic on I10.

this is a free blm camping with no amenities, no water, no dumpsters, no toilets and signage on roads is minimal. the farther you get from the pavement the two track roads get rough and rocky. some trash dumping closer to Tonopah end. cell signal was very good. flies are thick and persistent. logistics for grocery is poor, closest is a dollar general and a small local market mini mart. largest nuke plant in usa is only a few miles away.

AZ State Land Recreational Area Dispersed Site

    Ultimate Dispersed camping site

Very convenient to highway 95. This area can accommodate any rig size fome the largest to the lowest profile sedan. The more capability for 4x4 you have the further back you can go. I choose this area to ride out a series of rainstorms. I’ve been to the other BLM sites in the area and they are good but require driving though washes to get to the better sites. This location is above any potential flooding zones. This area does require a yearly AZ permit. For one person and one vehicle it was $17.00 for the year. This can be purchased online. Since I am staying thru then storms it makes it less then $5.00 a day.

    Buckskin Mountain State Park Campground

    Nice park in the river

Spent one night here. The spaces were nice and wide. I feel $50 for a state park is a little bit expensive. And the water tasted funny. The showers were older but clean. Nice hiking trails in the area.

    Rice Ranch RV Park

    New owners!

We met new managers upon arrival, and they were amazing. Got us hooked up in a great site. Brand new electrical, water, and sewer installed. A pickleball court, and a new dog park (hidden from view). We talked to management, they plan on installing a bar, a pool, bathrooms, laundry, and more in the next year or so. Very excited to come back to see how it’s changed! It is basically a dusty lot at the moment, but it has so much potential!

Guide to Salome

Camping sites near Salome, Arizona offer diverse landscapes at elevations between 1,500-1,800 feet in the Sonoran Desert. Winter temperatures average 65-75°F during daylight hours, making October through April the prime camping season. Most dispersed camping areas on BLM land have uneven terrain that requires careful site selection for level positioning.

What to do

Golfing opportunities: Centennial Park features a 9-hole golf course adjacent to its camping area, making it convenient for campers to enjoy a round without traveling far. "Hike trail around park. Host was a gem!! Beautiful sunset with hills," notes Stuart K. about Centennial Park.

Library visits: The county library across from Centennial Park provides a cool retreat during hot days. This facility offers internet access and reading materials for campers seeking indoor activities. "County library across street. Baseball diamond and playground," mentions a reviewer describing the convenient amenities.

Desert hiking: Multiple trails surround camping areas like Vicksburg Pit Road BLM, where hikers can explore abandoned mines and mineral deposits. "The area has quite a few mines, some are still active, most abandoned with clams marked everywhere. So be careful of any minerals (rocks) you pick up, including gold!" warns George K. about Vicksburg Pit Rd BLM.

What campers like

Community activities: Many RV parks organize regular social events for guests. "Potluck dinner on Mondays, and blueberry pancakes & orange juice on Tuesdays, hot dog & chips on Wednesdays. Saturdays was movie night with popcorn, and every night the guests would play games at 630 in both community areas," shares Sandy S. about the activities at Salome KOA.

Fruit picking: Some campgrounds feature citrus trees that campers can harvest when in season. "A nice perk at this park: there are a variety of citrus trees (different types of oranges and lemons) throughout that you can pick when in season," notes Laura M. about the Desert Gem RV experience.

Pool facilities: Heated swimming pools extend the swimming season at several campgrounds. "This campground had a very warm pool (90 degrees) and hot tub (104 degrees). It was pleasurable swimming at night, especially when the air is cold. It was like being at a hot spring!" explains a camper about evening recreation options.

What you should know

Payment options: Cash-only policies exist at some campgrounds, so come prepared. "Payment is cash only, credit cards not accepted," notes a reviewer about payment restrictions, though many offer discount programs like "Escapees and Good Sam."

Limited office hours: Several campgrounds operate with restricted office hours. "Office is only open until 3 and not open Sundays," mentions Missy C. about Black Rock RV Village, which can affect check-in timing.

Water quality: Water sources vary between campgrounds, with some using well water. At Salome KOA, "The person at the desk said they have their own well water which is good quality," while Centennial Park advertises, "Says they use reverse osmosis for water."

Tips for camping with families

Dog-friendly areas: Several campgrounds provide designated spaces for pets. Black Rock RV Village offers "small and separate large dog off leash areas" according to Missy C., making it suitable for families with different sized dogs.

Playground access: Families can utilize playground equipment at Centennial Park. "Baseball diamond and playground," mentions Stuart K., providing options for children to play outdoors away from campsites.

Entertainment options: Game facilities keep families occupied during downtime. "There was a game room, store and DVD rental library," notes Nicole R. about Salome KOA Journey, offering indoor entertainment when outdoor conditions are unfavorable.

Tips from RVers

Sewer hookup requirements: Unique county regulations affect how RVers must set up. "This is the first RV park I've seen to require that the sewer hose be raised off the ground, something we would not have been prepared for if we were staying there. According to the information sheet it is a La Paz County requirement," cautions Laura M.

Cell service realities: Despite strong signal indicators, data speeds may disappoint. "Good AT&T and Verizon reception, i.e. high bars, but for some reason service was so slow as to be almost unusable, even in non-peak times. Not sure why," reports a reviewer about connectivity challenges.

Dump station access: Plan ahead for waste disposal as hours and fees vary. "Dump station only open from 8-4 and price is now 15 instead if 10," notes Michael B. about Steve and Dawn Desert Getaway, highlighting the importance of timing waste disposal correctly.
