Primitive camping near Wenden, Arizona ranges from 1,200-2,200 feet in elevation with minimal light pollution, making it ideal for stargazing. The terrain consists primarily of desert pavement with occasional rock formations and sandy washes requiring careful navigation. Most dispersed sites feature existing fire rings and are accessible via 2WD vehicles, though high clearance is recommended during winter months when washes may contain flowing water.
What to do
Rock hounding opportunities: Ramsey Mine Rd. BLM / Dispersed Camping offers unique geological exploration. "This area has quite a few mines, some are still active, most abandoned with clams marked everywhere. So be careful of any minerals (rocks) you pick up, including gold!" notes George K. about Vicksburg Pit Rd BLM.
Wildlife viewing: Watch for wild burros at Alamo Lake dispersed sites. "The sunsets are beautiful and there are burros kicking around and yelling at each other," reports @57overlander C. You might also see "some old cowboys around on horse getting cattle" according to Timothy, who stayed at the area for 14 days.
Ghost town exploration: The Swansea Ghost Town provides a unique historical experience about 45 miles north of Wenden. "It was like you were camping in a museum. Walking around at night exploring the abandoned structures was surreal. You could almost hear the voices of the past and imagine what life was like in this town at the turn of the century," shares Charlie C.
Mountain hiking: Saddle Mountain offers moderate to strenuous hiking trails with expansive desert views. "Saddle Mountain is fun to hike but strenuous. The area is quiet and easy to get to," according to Weston S.
What campers like
Dark night skies: Campers consistently mention the exceptional stargazing conditions. "Gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains and very easy access to hiking and OHV trails. Sunrises and sunsets are endless and jaw dropping!" says Shari G. about La Posa South BLM Long Term Visitor Area.
Affordability: Free camping options abound throughout the region, with permit fees applying only for long-term stays. "We found our stay here very pleasant. Everyone we talked to was kind and friendly. Will definitely be back next season," shares Phil C. about La Posa South LTVA.
Cell service: Connectivity is surprisingly good in most areas. "Good cell reception with Verizon and AT&T," notes Laura M. about Vicksburg Pit Rd BLM. Another camper confirms, "I had cell reception on T-mobile and Verizon" at Alamo Lake Dispersed Campsite.
Privacy options: The expansive terrain allows campers to choose their preferred level of seclusion. "We stayed in the Magic Circle clothes optional area... You can be as social or private as much as you like," explains Semi H. about La Posa South BLM LTVA.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Summer temperatures regularly exceed 110°F, making winter the optimal camping season. "This year the temps have been between 44⁰C (112⁰F) and 1⁰C (33⁰F). Wind between 75kmh (47mph) and calm," reports Semi H. about La Posa South.
Water access: No potable water is available at most dispersed sites. A camper at Ramsey Mine Rd. BLM Dispersed Camping Area notes it has "no services available" and advises to "pack in and pack out and bring your own water."
Road conditions: Access roads vary significantly in quality. "The dirt road in, is in good condition. There are a lot of choices when it comes to places to camp," explains @57overlander C. about Alamo Lake. However, at Swansea Ghost Town, "a high clearance vehicle is needed. The drive in is a dirt road and very tough the last couple of miles," warns Jeffrey F.
Noise considerations: OHV activity can impact the camping experience. "Only drawback are the UHVs flying around stirring up dust and taking away from the peace and quiet that should come with off grid camping in a federal wilderness area," notes Michael B. about Alamo Lake.
Tips for camping with families
Supply planning: The nearest reliable supplies are often 20+ miles away. "Solome is just down the road with propane, laundry and a small grocery store. At the junction of 72 & 60 you can dump for $20 (Ramblin Roads RV Resort)," advises George K. about Vicksburg Pit Rd BLM.
Safety precautions: Prepare for limited emergency services. "TAKE WATER! TAKE WATER!" emphasizes Matt about Swansea Ghost Town, highlighting the critical need for adequate hydration in this remote area.
Educational opportunities: Historical sites provide learning experiences for children. "There are informational pedestals in front of the numerous foundations in the area. The mines are closed off with welded metal grates and i-beams supporting them for safety," explains Lyle F. about Swansea Ghost Town.
Site selection: Choose camping spots strategically based on amenities needed. "We first chose a spot beside the lake and then the next night headed up to a ridge spot," shares @57overlander C., demonstrating how families can adjust locations based on preferences.
Tips from RVers
Leveling considerations: Most areas provide relatively flat terrain suitable for larger rigs. "Free BLM dispersed camping with plenty of open flat areas with trees and bushes to allow for a sense of privacy to choose from," notes Laura M. about Ramsey Mine Rd BLM / Dispersed Camping.
Ground conditions: Tent campers should be aware of rocky surfaces. "Ground is very rocky so probably not good for tents. The road in is easy enough and fairly smooth and we made it easily quite a way back in our 26ft motorhome," explains Laura M.
Dump station protocol: Facility usage may require permits at long-term visitor areas. "People, they have to go and pay somebody to remove the trash. They also have to pay somebody to go and remove the gray water. And they have to bring in fresh water for everyone to use. This is not a free-for-all," emphasizes Rick M. about La Posa South LTVA.
Wind protection: Position RVs with weather considerations in mind. "Tricky gravel roads through the washes could cause some rigs a bit of difficulty. I got in with my truck camper and 20 foot trailer," shares Butch K. about Plomosa Rd. Quinn Pass BLM Dispersed Camping, adding "Can be windy don't deploy your awning!!"
