Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Salome, AZ

Salome KOA accepts pets at their well-maintained desert campground located along Highway 60. The campground features water and electric hookups for RVs, tent sites with picnic tables, and showers that campers with dogs find convenient after dusty desert hikes. Most campsites are level gravel with enough space for vehicles and pet exercise. The bathrooms remain clean and roomy even during busy periods. For those traveling with pets, Vicksburg Pit Rd BLM offers free dispersed camping with no designated pet areas but plenty of open space for dogs to explore. Both locations maintain a pet-friendly environment without strict breed restrictions, though leashes are required in developed areas.

The surrounding desert landscape provides extensive space for pet exercise with multiple hiking trails accessible from both campgrounds. During summer months, early morning walks are recommended to avoid dangerous hot ground temperatures that can burn paw pads. Many campers report bringing extra water specifically for pets due to the arid climate. The spots at Desert Oasis RV Parking provide more seclusion for campers with vocal dogs since there are only two spaces total. Centennial Park offers additional pet-friendly options with water and electric hookups for $20 per night, plus a hiking trail around the perimeter that serves as an excellent dog walking route. Several campgrounds provide dedicated areas for pet waste disposal, though bringing your own bags is recommended as supplies can be limited.

    River Island State Park Campground

    Nice family spot.

Lots of flying bugs 30 min before and after sunrise and set but they all go away. Not many camping spots but close to water and clean restroom with hot showers. Boat launch, lots of RV parking dog friendly with a dog park. Get good water shoes or your feet will be cut up from river rocks that are everywhere. Close tent camping so if you hate people walking through or around this is not ideal for you.

    River Island State Park Campground

One of the best State Parks

River Island is one of the nicest state parks I have been to.  All of the facilities are extremely well kept with immaculate bathrooms and an awesome dog park!  There is a boat launch and an area where ever the dogs can cool off in the lake.  In addition to enjoying the lake, there is an MTB Trail system just outside of Havasu City (20 Miles) with a good mix of riding.

    River Island State Park Campground

Great little place on the River!

We did a Friday-Monday extended weekend here. Great place, friendly staff, dog park and a short walk to the beach / cove area. We weren’t too fond of the 120° we experienced on our stay, but the cool water kept us all comfortable. We stayed in spot 12 and had no complaints it suited us perfectly!

    Buckskin Mountain State Park Campground

    Another great State Park

Buckskin is another favorite if you don’t mind the heat but want to be within walking distance to the water. The river is extremely busy during the summer months. You can swim close to shore but can’t swim across the river as you’ll get ran over. Great beach areas to beach boats and play in the water for the kids. We stayed in 57 which was close to the dump station but wasn’t busy until Sunday at check out time. There is a dog park on site. Cell phone service is terrible. (Verizon). The resturant and store recently closed. As well as the gas station. We heard that on the California side there was a newer site opening and an arcade but never checked it out.

    Buckskin Mountain State Park Campground

Beautiful setting on the grassy shores of the Colorado river.

We had a large shady site with river views.  It is a beautifully kept campground. Our dogs enjoyed the spacious and grassy dog park. Bathrooms/showers were basic and kept clean and functional.  Cell service was nonexistent for T-Mobile.  There is a boat ramp and designated swimming area. Very family friendly. There was no excess noise from campers or dogs.  A great experience.

    La Paz County Park

Nice place to stay, non-potable water

Very nice $30 full hookup. Dry camping also available. Usually booked Fri and Sat in winter as big swap meet there. River access, restaurant on premises, not too far from Parker AZ. Marked down because of water . 3 dog parks on site, showers

    River Island State Park Campground

    Our little slice of heaven

We absolutely adore this campground. It sits right off of a cove off the river, so if you have kiddos, it’s perfect! It keeps you away from all the boat traffic and is an ideal spot to kayak, swim, fish, and hike. There’s also a pet run, as well as a pet friendly area of the beach. The campground is well maintained and we love the staff! The camp hosts have been delightful each time we’ve been. When we’ve gone during spring, we experienced high winds. The September time frame seems to be perfect for us.

Guide to Salome

Dispersed camping options near Salome offer affordable alternatives to established campgrounds in this remote desert region at around 1,700 feet elevation. The area features relatively level terrain with abundant public BLM land stretching across the McMullen Valley. Winter temperatures typically range from 40-70°F, while summer daytime temperatures regularly exceed 100°F with minimal shade.

What to do

Desert hiking: Vicksburg Pit Rd BLM accommodates various outdoor activities within walking distance of campsites. "This area has quite a few mines, some are still active, most abandoned with clams marked everywhere. So be careful of any minerals (rocks) you pick up, including gold!" notes George K.

Explore local attractions: The area offers multiple day trip options. "One hour to Parker & Colorado River. About 25 minutes to Quartzite. Nice stores & library/community center in Salome," explains Beatriz G. from 3 Dreamers RV Park.

Off-road adventures: The desert terrain provides extensive trails for ATVs and dirt bikes. One camper mentioned that at Desert Vista RV Resort, "it's a constant hubbub of activity with people chatting, driving their ATVs in and out...and neighbors gathering around the campfire."

What campers like

Budget-friendly options: Centennial Park offers affordable camping with basic amenities. "Pull thru site #7 Water and electricity for $20. If you only stay a night or two it's $5.00 to dump (free with longer stay). Sites 1-12 elect/water," writes Stuart K. at Centennial Park.

Community atmosphere: Many campgrounds host regular social activities. At Black Rock RV Village, "They have activities throughout the week. They have mail boxes as well. We love it hear," shares Missy C., also noting they have "small and separate large dog off leash areas."

Convenient facilities: Despite the remote location, several campgrounds offer unexpected amenities. "The cafe has limited hours. But will try it out tomorrow for breakfast. The pool is open, and heated. The staff is nice, the laundry facilities are very clean, reasonably priced and the office makes change," reports Michael C. from Black Rock RV Village.

What you should know

Limited services: Prepare for minimal facilities at some locations. At Vicksburg Pit Rd BLM, "No amenities so pack in and pack out and bring your own water," advises Laura M., though she notes "Good cell reception with Verizon and AT&T."

Seasonal considerations: Winter months provide the most comfortable camping weather, while summers can be dangerously hot. Prepare accordingly with extra water and shade structures.

Water conservation: Many campgrounds operate on well water systems with variable pressure. One camper noted at Salome KOA, "According to the information sheet it is a La Paz County requirement" to raise sewer hoses off the ground.

Tips for camping with families

Safety precautions: Heat poses a significant risk, especially for children. Always carry extra water and avoid midday hikes during warmer months.

Entertainment options: Some campgrounds offer family-friendly facilities. "The kids loved the pool and there is a covered area that is shaded to sit and enjoy watching them," shares Norrie W. about Steve and Dawn Desert Getaway.

Educational opportunities: The area features geological and mining history. The abandoned mines mentioned by George K. provide learning opportunities about the region's mining past, though safety around these areas is essential.

Tips from RVers

Level sites: Most dog friendly campgrounds near Salome feature adequately level parking areas. Kevin S. notes Salome KOA offers "Gravel/dirt lot with level campsites, good power, water & sewer."

Privacy considerations: For those seeking more solitude with pets, consider smaller campgrounds. Caylee H. appreciates Desert Oasis RV Parking because "it is secluded and not packed. There are only 2 spaces so you can be sure to have solitude."

Internet connectivity: WiFi quality varies significantly between campgrounds. Some offer dedicated workspaces with better connections, as Norrie W. noted: "This campground doesn't have Wifi available for the sites but does have high speed in the diner and pavilion areas that are air-conditioned with nice workspaces."
