Best Campgrounds near Amberg, WI

The Amberg, Wisconsin area encompasses a range of camping environments from developed campgrounds to more rustic options in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Tranquil Vista Campground and Twelve Foot Falls County Park represent the established camping options near Amberg, with sites suitable for both tent and RV camping. Governor Thompson State Park Campground, located approximately 20 miles south of Amberg, provides year-round access with full hookup sites for RVs and designated tent areas. The region includes several mixed-use campgrounds that accommodate various camping styles, with some offering cabin rentals alongside traditional camping. Most established campgrounds in the area feature fire rings, picnic tables, and access to vault toilets, while some provide additional amenities like showers and electric hookups.

Camping in the Amberg area requires planning around seasonal conditions, particularly during winter months when snow can limit access to remote sites. Many campgrounds operate from April through October, with some facilities closing after the first snowfall. The region experiences significant mosquito activity during summer months, especially near water sources. Cell service varies throughout the area, with more remote forest locations having limited or no coverage. Reservations are recommended for developed campgrounds during peak summer weekends, while dispersed camping in the national forest typically operates on a first-come basis. Water access points are common features at many campgrounds, with some offering boat launches for fishing and recreation. A visitor noted, "This campground is out there. With sites right next to the lake, you're sure to enjoy some of Wisconsin's beautiful north woods."

Waterfront camping locations receive consistently positive feedback from visitors to the Amberg region. Several campgrounds provide direct access to lakes and rivers, with fishing opportunities being a major draw. The Peshtigo River area offers multiple camping options with varying levels of development and amenities. Campers report that sites backing onto water features tend to fill quickly during summer months. Forest camping provides more seclusion but typically offers fewer amenities than developed campgrounds. According to one review, "If outdoor recreation is your thing, this is the perfect base camp. The campground entrance is right off the ATV/Snowmobile/Horse Trails which connect to thousands of miles of trail systems all throughout the Northwoods of Wisconsin." The proximity to ATV and snowmobile trails makes certain campgrounds particularly popular with motorized recreation enthusiasts. Most developed campgrounds in the area maintain clean facilities with regular maintenance, though amenities vary significantly between locations.

    Governor Thompson State Park Campground

    Beautiful boondocks!

It's so quiet here. The campsites spread apart the campgrounds may be heavily booked, but it doesn't feel like it. There is swimming, boating (campsites are also available on the island), lots of hiking trails, and tons of waterfalls in the area. Thanks to the came hostess,Melody H, and the other park employees, the bathrooms and showers were impeccable. I've been camping in a tent for two weeks and I look forward to coming back next year.

Harbour Village Campground & Water Park

    “Rustic” tent camping

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at the “Rustic” tent camping site. We were the only people that camped over the weekend in the Rustic area. It was a very nice set up. Secluded and far away from any RV campers.

Our only complaint was that there was a HUGE party at the RV sites. Music blasting so loud from 7pm - 11:30pm. (Quiet hours are from 11pm - 8am) so that was really frustrating, especially when we were just trying to get away from city life and enjoy our campfire.

Harbor Village is the perfect location for Door County. It’s nestled next to Door County Coffee, Winery, and Brewery. Plus all of the site seeing is within an hour or two.

    The amenities were nice.

Other than the noisy neighbors, we enjoyed our time at Harbor Village. When we visit Door County, we will most likely stay here again.

    Bagley Rapids NF Campground

    Sweet Campground, Small and Quiet

Nice little campground in the Chequamegon National Forest. Cash only, FCFS. There’s not a lot of sites here, but it’s also pretty hidden away. I showed up on a Friday evening around 6:30pm and was still able to snag a spot on the river. Quite a few ticks here, make sure to bring some permethrin spray for your clothes and your dog. Tough fishing from the sites with a lot of overhanging tree cover, but there are a few fish around if you can get a cast in.

T-Mobile signal is non-existent, Verizon had 1-2 bars of LTE which was enough to send out a few texts.

Welcker's Point Campground — Peninsula State Park

Decent Campground, But There Are Better Within The Park

Stayed here over Labor Day weekend 2025. This was my first time staying at Welcker’s Point, however I’ve been to Peninsula State Park many times over the years. This campground is smaller than some of the other ones like Tennison Bay. It has about 80ish sites total. There’s one shower building and a couple bathroom buildings. The showers are the new style where each shower gets its own room/door. The water here is loaded with iron and comes out looking orange, even the well water for drinking. It didn’t taste bad, but it definitely looked gross in a water bottle. There’s a lot of spiders at this campground, more than other campgrounds at the park. The sites don’t have much for privacy, but it’s better than a parking lot.

Overall, if it was between this campground and not going at all, I’d pick this campground for sure. If you have other options within the park, I’d probably choose one of those instead.

Site 85 had absolutely zero T-Mobile and Verizon signal. Our phones were in SOS Mode. Brought the Starlink dish, but the tree cover was too thick for it to work.

    J.W. Wells State Park Campground

    Beautiful and peaceful

Really nice sites and you can see the water from most of them. Some sites were muddy but I think it was mostly from how busy it was over Labor Day. Facilities are clean and the camp hosts are so sweet (they have matching vests and serve coffee every morning). Really nice recreational activities (basketball, tetherball, horse shoes) and a trail leading to the picnic shelter and sandy swimming beach.

    North Bay Shore Park

    Beautiful

Right on the shores of Lake Michigan Most sites have asphalt pads and there is water and electric at the site There is also a dump station on the way in, which was clean and easy to access The sites are fairly close with not much privacy This side of the lake is very Mari so there is no beachfront at all, for people with a boat and wanting to launch it’s perfect but for rock hounds and beach walkers like me not so great. Not much hiking around either.
