What to do
Biking access to state parks: Tranquil Timbers provides direct access to nearby state park trails. "We were able to ride bike out of campground and directly only to state park trail," notes a camper at Tranquil Timbers, highlighting the convenient connection to Potawatomi State Park's trail system.
Monarch butterfly migration viewing: Peninsula Point Lighthouse Access Road offers a unique seasonal wildlife experience. A visitor mentioned, "Great sunset area, pretty drive there. Lighthouse to explore. Would love to be there for the monarch migration."
Cherry orchard visits: Hy-Land Court RV Park sits adjacent to a local cherry orchard. As one camper noted, "Great spot to explore Door County! Just north of sister bay and right next door to a cherry orchard this campground was great!"
What campers like
Private wooded sites: Many campgrounds offer secluded camping spots. At Rustic Timbers Door County Camping, one visitor remarked, "I was surprised that each site is pretty wooded making you feel like you don't have neighbors. The surrounding area is just expansive farmlands which is beautiful to look at when walking the dog in the morning."
Family recreation options: Multiple RV sites near Sister Bay feature dedicated family areas. "They had a live band all day Saturday until 9:15 and it made it difficult to get our 4 year old to nap/go to bed even with 2 sound soother on high and a fan running but I will say the band looked fun!" noted a camper at Rustic Timbers.
Clean facilities: HTR Door County maintains well-kept restrooms and grounds. According to one visitor, "This is one of the nicest private campgrounds we've been to. There's an abundance of sites to choose from - heavily to lightly wooded, pull thru, back-in, full or partial hookups, and tent sites are available."
What you should know
Site leveling requirements: Some campgrounds require significant leveling equipment. At BayRidge RV Park, a guest advised, "Have plenty of levelling equipment available!! Some are very level, some are not level at all. We were in spot 32 and 4" laterally and 19" longitudinally out of level to start with - at my max hitch jack limit and still 3" nose low."
Limited cell service: Many Door County campgrounds have poor connectivity. A BayRidge visitor reported, "No Verizon service. Only T-Mobile and AT&T. WIFI only works around the office/facilities building."
Dump station availability: Not all RV parks offer on-site dump facilities. At Countryside Motel & RV Sites, a visitor warned, "NO DUMP STATION AT ALL. No garbage dumpster. Water and electric only. I thought they had to have a dump station by law to be an rv place."
Tips for camping with families
Playground options: Rustic Timbers features both free and paid play areas. "They have fun kid things but you have to pay extra to use them. They have a free playground (old school looking, lots of metal haha) that my kids had a lot of fun on so that's good," shared one parent.
Kid-friendly pools: Tranquil Timbers Camping Resort offers separated swimming areas for different ages. One visitor explained, "I loved that they have a social gathering spot with movies and djs. The pool is small but clean they have a nice 1 foot deep separate pool for the little kids."
Multi-generation accommodations: Some campgrounds offer both RV sites and cabins for mixed-age family groups. At Tranquil Timbers, a camper noted, "We have been camping here for a few years now multiple times a year. We love this place. Quiet. Lots to do for kids. Pool, mini golf, game room, tennis courts, soccer, volleyball a rec center with games, TV ect."
Tips from RVers
Full hookup considerations: Hy-Land Court RV Park provides spacious sites with complete hookups. "Extremely friendly staff. We had full hookups and a large wooded site. Staff delivered firewood directly to you as well," reported one RVer.
Loop location selection: Site selection can impact convenience and privacy at larger campgrounds. At CAMP Door County, an RVer shared, "Wow, centrally located to EVERYTHING! The staff was so friendly and helpful. Sites were spacious and well maintained with plenty of trees."
Pet policies: Pet restrictions vary widely between campgrounds. One visitor at Tranquil Timbers warned, "Tranquil Timbers advertises pet friendly but they ARE NOT pet friendly. If your dog makes any kind of noise whatsoever, they are NOT welcome. Motorcycles and noisy kids however, park approved!"
