Lake Michigan's shoreline defines the experience at Tennison Bay Campground, where campers access the water directly from their sites through wooded paths. The 50-foot RV length limit accommodates larger rigs on gravel pads, while tent campers contend with hard-packed ground that challenges standard stakes. Laura M. notes "each site is very private and nicely spaced from the neighbor," though levelness varies between individual spots.
Rocky shoreline near campsites contrasts with the sandy main beach area, where shallow water extends well offshore for swimming. The campground maintains its own kayak launch, eliminating the need to transport watercraft to distant put-ins. Cell service proves unreliable for both Verizon and AT&T users, with signals cutting in and out unpredictably. Raccoons present a persistent challenge—multiple campers emphasize securing all food in vehicles overnight.
Full hookups serve RV campers, while a large dump station with multiple lanes handles the campground's capacity efficiently. Free showers operate from clean restroom facilities scattered throughout the grounds. The Nature Center and Northern Sky Theater sit within walking distance, along with trailheads accessing the park's extensive hiking network. Lucas M. observes that "kayaking, horseback riding, and amazing hikes are some of the immediate activities" available from this base.
Weekend reservations fill months ahead during summer, though weekday availability sometimes opens for last-minute bookers. The $42 nightly rate combines with a $13 daily park fee or $38 annual pass. Poison ivy grows near some sites, marked with warning signs. Hard ground conditions make sleeping pads essential for tent camping comfort.
Campers seeking different Peninsula State Park experiences can explore South Nicolet Bay Campground — Peninsula State Park for alternative site layouts and shoreline access.
