    Americamps RV Resort

    Most Dog-Friendly

Enjoyed my corner pull-through site F2 even though it was gravel with some muddy spots. There are some paved spots near the entrance (7-10 and 15-19 plus VIP 1 & 2). Fire pits and wood for $6 upon request. Nice office with two small dogs to greet you and a jar of dog treats. Was decked out for Halloween during my stay, and the flower beds, pond, playground, basketball court and dog park were among the nicest. There is even an on-site dog walker, so dog people will really appreciate staying here. I noticed one side of the park (around site 22) is very noisy during the work day as there is a big lumber yard there. The proximity to the Great Outdoors and a couple of cute pub houses was a nice surprise. Recycling dumpster on site.

    Williamsburg Campground

    Very nice campground

The cabin we stayed in was very nice. It had a very large back deck with a picnic table. We chose one without a bathroom, and the bathhouse was a very short walk. They have plenty of recreational activities for the kids. The staff was friendly and helpful. The playgrounds and pool were very clean, and the store had everything we needed. It is a very short drive off the highway and an easy commute to all of Williamsburg’s attractions. My only complaint is that my dogs typically travel everywhere with me, but I was not allowed to bring them on this trip because pit bulls are the ONLY breed they don’t allow on the campgrounds. However, if you have other breeds there is a very small dog park for them to run around and play. Other than that we really enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay at other KOAs when the dogs are not with us.

    Cloverdale Farms

    Camping at Cloverdale

We’ve got a little 20 acre hobby farm. This historic property has gently rolling hills, with a little creek amidst a couple acres of cleared, open, secluded woodland perfect for pitching a tent and listening to nature. Fields in the back lend a great view for star gazing and looking up at the Milky Way. If the peace and quiet isn’t enough for you, there are pet goats, cats, a dog, and chickens that all love attention. Guests are more than welcome to help in the garden, pick flowers, and enjoy fresh produce and eggs while they’re here. Located 5 minutes from the James River, guests can hop over to the boat landing for fishing, swimming and boating or check out Blanton and Pleasants, a community staple. If you’re a hiker, there’s a state forest and state park just a short 15 minute drive west.

our first trip in Tex the Apex

this was our first trip in our travel trailer, so we didn’t know what to expect. the campground was very clean, we constantly saw crew keeping it up. we had a campfire and roasted s’mores. the general store was fully stocked. the pool and water park area were my daughter’s favorite. they had big jumpy things for the kids, an out door movie theater and a nice playground. our dog enjoyed the dog park.

Richmond North - Kings Dominion KOA

    Good campground

We stayed during the covid pandemic when things were just starting to open back up, so the play grounds weren’t available. The bathrooms are clean and the laundry facility is a plus. They also have a dog park which we used a ton. Most spots are shaded and there are paved and gravel roads. The spaces are very snug so forget privacy when they’re busy, but at the time we were the only ones on our little road. The store is super pricey, but overall a good campground.

    Williamsburg Campground

    Great Choice in Williamsburg

One of the best campgrounds we’ve stayed at. It’s our first experience with a KOA, and so far impressed. The whole campground is shady, and while some sites appear pretty on top of one another most, including ours, are are standard. Great amenities, including a pool and a small splash pad. The jumping pillows are awesome for the kids. The only criticisms are that the dog park is very small, and the sewer hook up for our site is nearly above the outlet (although this seems site specific). We are in Williamsburg a lot and will definitely be back.

Guide to Hanover

Camping around Hanover, Virginia sits at approximately 200-300 feet above sea level in Virginia's Piedmont region, with mild spring and fall camping seasons. Summer humidity can make tent camping challenging, with temperatures typically ranging from 80-95°F between June and August. The area features both privately-owned campgrounds and state parks within driving distance of this central Virginia location.

What to do

Fossil hunting excursions: At Westmoreland State Park Campground, visitors can search for prehistoric shark teeth along the shoreline. "I love the sharks' teeth display in the shop and when I was there they were working on putting bones together of a whale that was found," notes RL, who recommends visiting on quieter weeknights.

Mountain biking trails: Pocahontas State Park offers well-maintained routes for cyclists of all skill levels. "Lots of hiking, fantastic mountain bike trails, lots of history," reports Ashley I., who appreciated the park's proximity to urban amenities while maintaining a wilderness feel.

Seasonal celebrations: Halloween events at various campgrounds provide special activities for campers with children. "Had a great time for Halloween here. Will be back," shares Jason L. after his festive experience at Westmoreland State Park, which offers organized seasonal programming.

What campers like

Private wooded sites: Powhatan State Park Campground receives high marks for spacious camping areas. "Sites are very spacious and good distance between other campers. Nice privacy," notes Jim L., who appreciated the separation between sites during his stay.

Clean facilities: Bathhouses and common areas at Richmond North - Kings Dominion KOA maintain high standards. "Clean campground, friendly staff. Somewhat tight spots. Stayed for a week or so, not a bad place to be, quiet," according to Ashley I., who found the experience comfortable despite closer site spacing.

Amusement park access: The shuttle service to Kings Dominion from Richmond North KOA makes this campground popular for families wanting theme park adventures. "Nice location. Next to King's Dominion," states Brian P., highlighting the convenient proximity to this major attraction.

What you should know

Traffic noise considerations: Some campgrounds near highways experience road noise. At Americamps RV Resort, one reviewer mentioned: "The only negative comments would be it's right up against interstate 95 so it's a constant drone of traffic."

Post-rain conditions: Drainage issues can occur at some campgrounds after storms. "Due to Covid and the proximity to a temporarily closed King's Dominion this campground was very quiet. We enjoyed a larger pull through lot that faced the woods," observed Scott T., noting how site selection impacts experience.

Reservation timing: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially during peak season and holidays. "This campground is definitely for trail bikers and RVers. The campsites fill up quickly. If you do not reserve your spot early, you may be placed near the road, where traffic is an issue," warns Emmely B. about site selection at Powhatan State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly facilities: Fredericksburg-Washington DC KOA offers numerous child-oriented amenities. "Kid focused park. Lots of activities. Great setting. Nice sites. Very wooded. Big pond. Great store," shares James P., highlighting the family-friendly atmosphere.

Open play spaces: Finding campgrounds with room for children to explore safely makes family trips more enjoyable. "This is a great place for families with children, young and old! Kid friendly biking around the park. Also saw many with electric scooters and golf carts. Large playground and pool, all very clean and well kept," Cat R. noted about Richmond North KOA.

Swimming options: Pool facilities provide recreation for families during hot summer days. "Swimming pool was awesome with lites and fountains," according to Donna A., who stayed at Americamps RV Resort with her family.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling needs: Pocahontas State Park Campground offers varied site conditions. "From what I observed, the sites were all pretty level. Close to the Interstate so made it great for a one night stay," reported Cat R., who found the easy access convenient.

Dog-friendly accommodations: Many campgrounds near Hanover welcome pets with dedicated facilities. "Most spots are shaded and there are paved and gravel roads. The spaces are very snug so forget privacy when they're busy, but at the time we were the only ones on our little road. The store is super pricey, but overall a good campground," explained Samantha G. about her stay at Richmond North KOA, which includes a dog park.

Hookup availability: Power and water connections vary between campgrounds and sites. "Well maintained trails, level sites. No full hookup (yes 30/50 amp)," noted Ashley I. about her experience at Powhatan State Park, highlighting the need to check specific site amenities when booking.
