Best Campgrounds near Hill City, SD

Beautiful park with stunning mountain and lake views. We saw sheep, bison, and tons of deer while touring the state park via vehicle. We stayed at site 12E in the end of March. Our site was very private and on a colder at the end of the loop; though further from the bathhouse than some of the other sites. Our camp host was very knowledgeable of the area, and gave us wonderful advice about local scenic areas. This campground is about an hour away from Mount Rushmore.

Very quiet. Some sites have no shade at all. This one was very nicely shaded and tucked away from the road. Elk and Coyotes sounding off all night.

The place was very calm just some cars went on the road behind us. I really recommend this place. Cell coverage is poor but still present. You can go to this place if you search a very calm place.

Sites are graded but location is on a hill making getting around a pain. The weather was very, very hot when we were there and there wasn't any shade at our spot. Decent experience overall.

My Son and I stayed here while visiting Mount Rushmore and the surrounding area's other attractions. There's a lot of dispersed spots here but most spots don't have a fire ring that I could see. There's only a few spots that a high clearance vehicle might be required but most of the road can be explored without one.

This is a pack in and pack out site with no facilities; no running water, no bathrooms, nothing. Make sure you bring what you need with you.

Weather was great, very mild. Air was fresh and crisp.

We are planning on staying here again in the future because of it's close proximity to everything and my 6 year old loved it!

We came in one afternoon and there was hardly any sites available. It was beautiful tho!

Located close to Sturgis and the Black Hills, it’s an excellent base for exploring the area. The onsite pool, hot tubs, and lounge are small but add a nice touch, while the friendly staff ensures a pleasant stay.

It’s particularly popular during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. We stayed there shortly after the rally and were surprised to find the onsite bar closed throughout our entire stay.

Stayed a night in early November. Didn’t see any notice that the bathroom we picked a spot near was closed for the season… that meant a really long cold walk to the pit toilet. Quite a few shady sites, a babbling brook nearby, a flock of turkeys wandering through most of the morning. While the campground was mostly empty, we had neighbors directly adjacent with at least two dead deer in the back of their pickup for more than 24 hours, with crows coming by for snacks… kinda gross.

Beautiful scenery with loads to do. The drive from Mt Rushmore to the campsite was incredible

Clean small campground. Probably really busy state park in summer months. End of loop only trails and wildlife behind us.

I found the place easily and the spots were well apart from each other. The weather was great camping in the pine trees, very quiet and cozy. Will definitely camp at again.

Lots of cool spots if you can get to them. Once you leave the gravel the roads are hit and miss. You’re not taking a trailer down most of them if any.
