Pine Ridge Recreation Area provides free primitive camping with designated pet-friendly sites spaced far enough apart for privacy, particularly site #4 which features a long strip of open space for dogs to run around without disturbing neighboring campers. Most campgrounds in the area maintain standard leash requirements, though specific pet policies vary by location. Cottonwoods RV Park & Campground accommodates pets with 83 sites open year-round, though some reviewers note limited on-site space for walking larger dogs, with the nearby road leading to a ballpark providing better exercise options. Finger Lakes State Park Campground features a designated dog park that receives mixed reviews, with some campers noting its convenient location while others mention rocky terrain with limited grass. Trails throughout the region provide varied terrain for dog walking, though hikers at Dry Fork Recreation Area report significant tick presence on overgrown paths, making thorough pet checks essential after outings. The Mark Twain National Forest's Pine Ridge Recreation Area offers additional hiking options with more maintained trails suitable for dogs. Most campgrounds provide basic amenities like fire rings and picnic tables, with varying levels of hookups depending on the site. Lazy Day Campground receives consistently positive mentions for its clean, gated dog park and pet-friendly atmosphere, with owners who deliver firewood directly to campsites. Campers seeking more remote experiences with pets should prepare for limited cell service at conservation areas like Daniel Boone, where the gravel roads provide clean walking areas when trails become muddy.

      Lake Ozarks RV Resort

Clean campground, close to many attractions

This campground is clean, and is close to many attractions near the Lake of the Ozarks.

Wifi is spotty, but my site was at the back of the campground. The campsite also has a new in ground pool and dog park.

Reason I gave this campsite 3 stars is because it is clearly still under construction (6/30/23), which I was not aware of. My guess is this was the first season it was open. Half of the park still had conex boxes and construction equipment around. The dog park had little grass and was very rocky.

The owners were VERY nice and accommodating.

If I were to return next year in 2024 I have no doubt I would have given this campsite 4 or 5 stars

      Lazy Day Campground

      Best campground and hosts

Cleanest campground with all the amenities. The hosts are the owners and they are so nice and helpful. You follow them to your site and they deliver firewood if you paid for it. Sites are clean. There is a gated dog park. Everything above is at the campground. Our dog really liked the owner too.

      Lazy Day Campground

      Mixed reviews

We were parked on a hill with lots of gravel. Campsites are very narrow. But there was a very nice pond to fish at although it was a bit of a hike to get to. They have a dog park which was nice.

      Lazy Day Campground

      Nice stop over in

Stayed for one night, water/elec only. Easy on/off the interstate and staff is very friendly. Assigned site was in the back of the park and nice and shady. They have a very nice, large dog park which our pups loved. Being in the back of the campground we had to walk a little to get there, but no big deal. Did not use their showers or bathroom, so can’t comment on that. Booked to stay again on our return trip.

      Linn Creek Koa

      Great for just popping through.

Great place for a place to stay near the lake of the ozarks attractions. Super close to big surf and not a bad drive from all the lake has to offer. But not a favorite for a trip focused more on hanging out at the camp site. Very hilly (though grade on the site wasn’t bad at all), pull through sites make getting in easy with larger rigs but all roads through are gravel and rutted so not the easiest. Sites close together without much in between. Nice large trees would offer some summer shade but still not much separation between sites. Water and electric at site. Small “dog park” (fenced in area) great for smaller dogs to run off leash and pretty large kid okay ground too. Overall we will stay here again but think of it more as bringing our own hotel to the lake rather than coming to enjoy the campground.

      Finger Lakes State Park Campground

      Didn't feel welcome

We are homeless and we got a campsite for two week here and I got a special needs child. And my boy were up at the water and all I did was call then over to me and I get 3 cops at my site. When cross from me the people at that site start there car off and on all night and dog parks from 6 am to 8 am. But I get told if I am loud I get kick out. Thank you for the welcoming feel

      Lazy Day Campground

One of the Nicer Private Campgrounds

The campground (CG) was easy to find, located just 5 miles off I-70 with clear signage along the way. We parked at the designated registration area, and check-in was quick for our one-night stay. We were then escorted to pull-through site 17 with full hookups. The gravel pad was fairly level, and although the utilities were toward the back of the site, we had no trouble connecting. There were two sewer hookups—a nice touch. Water is shared, but the pressure was solid at about 50 psi. Sites are decently spaced, though some are closer together; ours was relatively close to the next site on the driver side. Our site had a nice yard, picnic table, and fire pit, but if someone had been in the site next to us, we would have been sharing that area. We got 2 bars on Verizon and 3 bars on T-Mobile, and our T-Mobile Home Internet worked very well. The CG WiFi was fine for email and web browsing. While the grounds have mature trees, most sites—including 17—are satellite-friendly. The 1/2-acre dog park was especially impressive. There was a mix of permanent, seasonal, and short-term guests. The park was clean, well-maintained, and featured fun wood carvings. The setting includes a pond and a trail to a small lake. A small camp store, ice, and propane are also available. Overall, this is a solid CG for overnight or extended stays. Out of the 325+ campgrounds we've visited, this one has the best rules sheet—hands down. It's hilarious, and you’ll instantly get their vibe!

      Dry Fork Recreation Area

      Dry Fork Campground

The Pine Ridge Campground a few miles down the road was full, so we ended up at 1 of the 8 sites here. This is an equestrian campground that allows non-horse campers, but prefers you check Pine Ridge first. We had a fine one-night stay while traveling through, but encountered A LOT of ticks on the overgrown trail. BEWARE of ticks and check yourselves and your pets if staying here. No cell service.

    Guide to Hartsburg

Camping near Hartsburg, Missouri offers access to diverse water features including the Missouri River, Cedar Creek, and several lakes. Positioned at approximately 580 feet elevation, the area receives about 43 inches of annual rainfall, creating lush woodland camping opportunities. Summer temperatures typically reach the high 80s with humidity levels over 70%, making water access a priority for most campers.

    What to do

Water recreation access points: Cooper's Landing Campgrounds and Marina provides direct boat access to the Missouri River where "the river is wide and deep here. Current and undertows make it definitely not suitable for swimming. You can see the water swirling and churning," according to Brenda P. The landing serves as a launch point for fishing excursions and motorized boating.

Trail riding options: Finger Lakes State Park Campground offers extensive trails formed from an old strip mining area. One camper noted, "I grew up camping and swimming here! The beach usually is not crowded, which is really nice. I'm not a fan of the motorcross noise, but there is a noise curfew so it's tolerable," reports Heather S. The park maintains designated ATV and motocross trails separate from camping areas.

Firearm practice: Located across from Finger Lakes State Park Campground, a public shooting range provides target practice opportunities. "I've passed through Missouri numerous times, and their parks are always top notch. Clean and well maintained," notes Robert R. The range requires users to bring their own targets and observe strict safety protocols.

    What campers like

Food options at campgrounds: Unlike most primitive sites, Cooper's Landing offers on-site dining. "Great food and views! I suggest trying the Thai food, but if you aren't into that they also have BBQ. This is a very relaxing spot and I recommend checking it out," shares Charlotte B. Food trucks regularly rotate through the property during summer months.

Budget-friendly camping: Pine Ridge Recreation Area offers no-cost camping with basic amenities. "Free camping, donations are encouraged. Two water spigots in the camping area. Pit toilets are fairly clean," reports Paul K. The campground typically fills on weekends while remaining relatively quiet mid-week.

Live entertainment: Cooper's Landing Campgrounds and Marina features regular musical performances. "The evening band was awesome!" notes Jeanne K., while another camper mentions, "Leaving this magical place today. For anyone wanting to stay be aware they have live music Thursday through Sunday. They wrap everything up by 10pm and it's very quiet late night."

    What you should know

Seasonal closures: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Hartsburg operate on limited schedules. One camper reported about Pine Ridge Recreation Area: "I arrived at the site in April of 2025, and was greeted with a locked gate and signage stating rates are $15 per night." Another noted: "Closed for the season. Will reopen in April 2022."

Limited waste disposal: Many campgrounds lack full sanitation services. At Cooper's Landing, campers note: "You will have water and electric but no sewer and no dump station on site. Plan your length of stay accordingly." RVers should plan dump station stops before arrival.

Security concerns: Some campers report uncomfortable encounters at more remote sites. At Pine Ridge Recreation Area Mark Twain National Forest, a camper mentioned: "My husband and I have felt a little unsafe. We once had another camper come into our site and not want to leave." Solo campers should consider more established campgrounds with staff presence.

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming locations: While the Missouri River is unsafe for swimming, alternatives exist. "The camp grounds are not overly private and are not in the best of shape (ground is really uneven). Though the camp area itself is nothing to write home about, there is a lake about a mile or so that is great for fishing and kayaking as well as a swimming beach," notes Kirstie M. about Finger Lakes State Park Campground.

Site selection for kids: When camping with children at Pine Ridge Recreation Area, specific sites offer better play areas. "I stayed at #3 and it was a very spacious private spot. If you have kids/dogs I recommend spot #4 it has a long strip of playroom for running around without disturbing other spaces," advises Chrischelle N.

Recreation facilities: Binder Park Campground provides multiple family-friendly amenities. "17 Full service sites. A very clean facility with full plumbing. Sites are a little small and back up to a fairly busy road but no real issue here. A full disc golf course nearby and several ball fields. We love this park," shares Josh S.

    Tips from RVers

Site spacing: At Cottonwoods RV Park & Campground, site proximity can be an issue. "The only negative thing I would say is the spaces were very close to each other. Our slide nearly went over the patio of the next site over," reports David E. Larger RVs should request end sites where available.

Park improvements: Osage Campground Retreat has undergone significant renovations. "We were hesitant to come based on other reviews, new management/owner about 8 months now. Major improvements to the campground. New gravel, with large flat spots, very clean and quiet. Long termers have been cleared out with only a few left that have well kept spots. Campground big enough for large rigs," shares a reviewer from Never Sitting S.

Leveling requirements: Site terrain varies substantially at pet friendly campgrounds near Hartsburg. At Finger Lakes, campers note "Most sites looked level, but some are a bit wacky. We had a wacky one, and the host was nice, and quick to reposition us to a better spot." RVers should bring leveling blocks, especially at state park campgrounds.
