What to do
Hiking through wooded trails: Lebanon Hills Regional Park features extensive trail systems for hiking enthusiasts. "We did get to check out part of one of the many hiking paths," notes one visitor. The park's natural setting provides a surprising escape within the Twin Cities metro area.
Water recreation opportunities: Lake Byllesby Campground offers boating access though swimming may be restricted at times. "We didn't get to swim at the lake because it was shut down due to a chemical spill at the time, but we did walk over and check it out. The views are great!" shared a camper at Lake Byllesby Campground.
Tubing excursions: Country Camping Tent & RV Park provides unique tubing experiences on the Rum River. "Tubing! They have a bus that takes you into town float back to the campground, love it," shares one reviewer. The river has a "very clean and sandy bottom" according to another visitor.
What campers like
Modern bathroom facilities: Cleary Lake Regional Park receives high marks for cleanliness. "Amazing bathroom/Showers. Quiet, lots of flies, good spot overall. The golfing nearby that seemed reasonably priced for those interested," notes a visitor to Cleary Lake Regional Park.
Family-oriented amenities: Country Camping offers numerous recreational options. "I stayed here 3 weeks ago with my wife and 2 young children and it was fantastic great playground and heated pool the spaces were well kept and spaced apart 10-10 would most defiantly go again! A ton for the kids to do!" shares an enthusiastic camper.
Site privacy at select locations: Baker Park Reserve provides more secluded options. "It was fairly busy, but we still felt secluded despite a full campground. There are nice paved trails around a couple of lakes/ponds for biking, and easy access to the shower and bathroom facilities (which were very nice)," reports a camper at Baker Park Reserve.
What you should know
Weekend availability limitations: Regional parks fill quickly during summer months. "Reserve early online, most weekends were already reserved by mid May," advises a Lebanon Hills visitor about planning ahead for weekend stays.
Site selection considerations: Dakotah Meadows RV Park offers various site options with different features. "We last stayed in side 25, a back in up on the hill. We have also stayed in the pull through sites, but not really a fan of those. Still, I would choose this park over others in the area for the access to 494 and 35W," explains one camper.
Reservation policies: Some campgrounds have unique reservation practices. "Bad thing is they don't make you pay to make a reservation so people reserve a spot and don't show up. My photo shows our row with 5 empty spots and they said they ere full," notes a Lake Byllesby camper about reservation challenges.
Tips for camping with families

Turns out this is a wonderful camp ground and offers a lot of seclusion."
Tips from RVers
Site surface considerations: Town & Country Campground in Savage offers RV parking on firm surfaces. "Super nice RV Park. If you're looking for an RV Park in the Shakopee/Savage area this place is nice. Game room small pool unfortunately all closed due to COVID but super cute little park," notes a visitor to Town & Country Campground.
Power management: Electricity can sometimes be an issue during peak times. "Had one issue with power dropping so we had to pull the surge protector off the. It was fine. Also very hot and humid so everyone was running AC to the max," reports a camper at Country Camping.
RV-specific amenities: Dakotah Meadows provides services specifically for RVs. "Shuttle takes you to casino, but sometime we don't even go there and just enjoy the area. Good things are level cement parking area and grassy spots," notes one regular visitor who returns multiple times per summer.
