    Chatfield State Park Campground

Popular and large campground near the lake

As it is very close to the city, the temperature stays consistent with Denver temps. So in the summer, it will not be as cool as some mountain spots. That being said, it is very easy to get to and you’ll have the lake right there to cool off!

Entrance into the state park is about $7/day. There is a dog park within the state park that allows off leash and has some ponds the dogs can swim in. Entrance to the dog park is $2.

    Diamond Campground & RV Park

Large Park Near Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak & More

This park is definitely well visited, but for good reason. It is located in Woodland Park, a lovely mountain town about 30-40 min. outside Colorado Springs. Lots of sites, mostly RV but there is a nice tent only section with a good number of spaces. We stayed overnight in early July and actually pitched our tent next to our family RV underneath the awning, safe from the summer showers that seem to pass thru almost daily in the summer months. Lots of amenities, including parks with play equipment for the kiddos, a dog park, nice bathrooms & showers.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

A piece of nature tucked into the city.

Located in the city, but once you’re in the park you don’t feel like you’re in the city at all!!! The RV spots have full hookups and are nice and spacious, as are the neighbors. We were able to set up a tent too! Great place to stroll and relax. Beautiful sunsets. Clean bathrooms and laundry facilities with a little vending machine.

A great place for camping (RV and tent spots), fishing, wildlife/nature viewing, hiking, boating (all water activities), has a swim beach, marina, off leash dog park, shooting range, horse stables that you can do a beautiful hour horseback ride.

FEES: Campsites $41 full hookup, basic campsite $28, daily park pass is $11, annual park pass $83, daily dog park pass $3, annual dog park pass $25, and group camping is available too.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

    City Camping at it's Best

Great campground here at this state park. We have always stayed in the Arapahoe Group Loop for holiday weekends. Arapahoe Group Loop has a great pavillion with outdoor kitchen and bathroom. Overall Camper amenities are great and very clean. Many well shaded individual sites are available. Campsites are far from other park amenities like Dog Park, Shooting Range, Marina. Swim beach is a 10 minute walk-able distance from campground. Recommend driving to get around the park.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

Super busy but great for dogs

This is a location that you only camp if you literally don't have any worries about being around people. It is ALWAYS packed due to the tons of hiking trails, huge dog park, and water access.

I taught kayaking to little ones here and it was always a fight to get into the park, get to the water, and not get run over by boats and unexperienced (or entitled) people.

The campground is well maintained but it sit really worth being able to be basically in a metropolitan city? For me I'll go somewhere more nature friendly and less crowded.

BUT it is excellent for dogs. We love taking out dogs here because they can play in water, run their hearts out, and hang out with other dogs. It is pricey to get into the park though. $80 for a year pass to the state parks and another $25 for the dog park fees.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

    So much to do!

Chatfield is such a great park; I’ve spent so much time biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, spending time with family; picnics areas are even great to have lunch. The dog park is by far the best. Off leash- so much room; well taken care of and big lake for the dogs to swim. And it’s close to Denver - so we go here weekly!

What to do

Outdoor recreation at Cherry Creek: Visitors enjoy multiple activities beyond the dog park, including swimming at the designated beach area. As one camper notes, "Nice Swim Beach with brand new Bldg. Many covered Picnic sites, but again, you MUST arrive at the break of day to secure one" (Kay S., Cherry Creek State Park Campground).

Mountain biking trails: The Buffalo Creek Recreation Area provides extensive trail networks for mountain bikers of various skill levels. A reviewer shared, "Great camping spot, esp. if you like mountain biking. Not whistler in terms of terrain but plenty of trails for various ability levels" (andrew B., Buffalo Creek Recreation Area).

Scenic hiking: Mount Herman Road offers hiking with panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains. "If you enjoy panoramic views of the Rockies, drive in dispersed camping and putting your off-roading skills to the test, this dispersed campsite is a must visit!" (Monte P., Mount Herman Road Dispersed Camping).

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Chatfield State Park campers appreciate the well-maintained grounds and ample space between sites. "Great layout and facilities. This is one of our favorite spots to stay when visiting Denver area. Great for biking and all kinds of water sports. Laundry facility on each loop sites are spread out giving plenty of room between sites" (Rick, Chatfield State Park Campground).

Wildlife viewing: Many areas near Parker provide opportunities to observe local wildlife in their natural habitat. "We stayed here for one night before heading back out on the road. This place is huge and has many amenities. It's very well maintained" (Stephanie S., Cherry Creek State Park Campground).

Natural settings close to urban areas: Rampart Range Recreation Area offers a wilderness feel despite proximity to cities. "Nice sites with easy access to lots of trails and Wellington lake. Only downside is that it is very difficult to find a spot on a weekend" (Keiko F., Rampart Range Recreation Area).

What you should know

Reservation timing: Many popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially during summer months. "Campground is usually fully booked all season. Reservations can be made six months out. Two week limit" (Kay S., Cherry Creek State Park Campground).

Noise considerations: Some campsites experience traffic noise that may affect your camping experience. "The neighborhood to the north of the park is nice. Getting into the park is tricky. As you drive up, you see a sign that says office and do not enter. You need to turn left just past the sign" (Julia S., Denver Meadows RV Park).

Fire restrictions: Check current fire regulations before your trip as restrictions vary by location and season. "There is an active fire ban in the area and the neighbors were lighting 5ft tall fires with gasoline which put us at risk. If you are going to be camping in BLM or Wildlife Areas please follow the restrictions" (Hayley K., Buffalo Creek Recreation Area).

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Some campgrounds specifically cater to children with specialized activities. "So much to do for the littles!! Recently completely redone the entire park and it is all so wonderful! The campsites are amazing and the activities are so much fun" (Stacy M., Jellystone Park™ at Larkspur).

Bathroom access: When camping with children, proximity to clean restrooms can be important. "Bathrooms were in excellent condition. There are hot showers (that take quarters), running water, and even a laundry room. The shower house itself was heated" (Hayley K., Rampart Range Recreation Area).

Pet-friendly camping options: For families camping with dogs near Parker, Colorado, verify pet policies before arrival. "My husband and I stayed in this beautiful campground in 2018 June. The wild life was beautiful, the facilities were clean, and the staff was friendly and helpful!" (Cassandra T., Chatfield State Park Campground).

Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Be prepared to level your RV at some locations. "The site we were assigned was very uneven. It was practically a down hill slope. I had a hard time getting my camper level" (Kohl, Casey Jones RV Hideaway).

Road condition awareness: Some dispersed camping areas have rough access roads requiring appropriate vehicles. "The road up is very tight. Very skinny switchbacks. About half way up looking for a way to turn around" (Jaymin B., Mount Herman Road Dispersed Camping).

Hookup availability: Many pet-friendly campgrounds near Parker offer full hookups, but availability varies by site. "Clean bathrooms. Very friendly attendant. Level primative spots. $26 for primative" (Christa C., Chatfield State Park Campground).
