Take Your Pick

Only stayed here once, but drive by it often and always admire the variety of sites. Not a big campground, but each site feels like its own world. We will definitely be back again.

Chill Coastal Canyon Campground

Sorry for the alliteration…we really enjoyed this CA State Park campground that is so close to the Pacific you can walk from your site to Spooner’s Cove Beach (dog-friendly). LOTS of trails for any activity you choose: hiking, biking, horseback riding, birding, nature ID walks…you name it! This is a gem!

Santa Clara County Gem

Beautiful county park in the redwood forest of the coastal range. Varied sites and multiple campgrounds make for a choice option for everyone. We’ve stayed here twice and enjoyed it both times.

Beautiful Campground Just Outside of Town

Just a few minutes outside of the lovely village of Cloudcroft, this campground offers several sites, all with a bit of variety from the next. We stayed overnight in mid July and really enjoyed the location. This is a great spot to escape the heat of the desert. Be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms & showers in the summer months. Sleepy Grass campground is also nearby in case this one is full. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys peaceful mountain camping.

Large Park Near Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak & More

This park is definitely well visited, but for good reason. It is located in Woodland Park, a lovely mountain town about 30-40 min. outside Colorado Springs. Lots of sites, mostly RV but there is a nice tent only section with a good number of spaces. We stayed overnight in early July and actually pitched our tent next to our family RV underneath the awning, safe from the summer showers that seem to pass thru almost daily in the summer months. Lots of amenities, including parks with play equipment for the kiddos, a dog park, nice bathrooms & showers.

Great Location Near Arches, Canyonlands & Other Desert Parks

More of an RV & trailer campground, but they do have a row of tent sites. Each tent site has a picnic table and space for your tent and car, but not much (if anything) else. Unfortunately we had LOTS of ants on our site when we stayed here overnight in late June. Thankfully there was a flatbed trailer parked right next to our site and we were able to pitch our tent on the trailer, safe from the ants (thank you awesome couple from Chicago who let us use their trailer!). The staff was very friendly & there are plenty of facilities (showers & bathrooms) and WiFi for campers, too!

Visit the ”Quieter” Rim

Stayed for a single night in late June. There were severe fire restrictions on at the time so no campfires allowed. Sites were generously sized and spaced out. Lots of sites; large campground. VERY close to the Transept Canyon, a side canyon that feeds into the Grand Canyon. We will definitely visit this campground again.

Ideal All-Purpose Campground in the Central Sierras

This is a fantastic, all-purpose campground with three large loops set in an old sequoia grove (sadly logged of all old growth from 1901-1908). There are nearly 100 sites in total, most suited for RVs & trailers, all for tents. There are sequoia stumps are spread throughout the entire campground and adjacent meadow. The facility is well maintained and monitored by camp hosts, who are all very friendly. There is also a lovely paved trail near the adjacent meadow and sequoia grove. This is an ideal location just outside Kings Canyon National Park, located between Grant Grove and Kings Canyon itself. Nearby Hume Lake offers more recreation including fishing, boating, hiking and more.

Small foothills campground next to a creek that runs year round.

This small roadside campground is a lovely spot, tucked between a hillside and Deer Creek running year round right at the edge of the campground. We’ve visited the site three times in total, having camped twice (late April & late October). Year round camping is possible, provided you are ready for possible precipitation and dampness. Be prepared with cash to pay your daily fees, as there is just a self check-in station. Nice spot that we enjoyed and will visit again. 😎
