      Chatfield State Park Campground

Popular and large campground near the lake

As it is very close to the city, the temperature stays consistent with Denver temps. So in the summer, it will not be as cool as some mountain spots. That being said, it is very easy to get to and you’ll have the lake right there to cool off!

Entrance into the state park is about $7/day. There is a dog park within the state park that allows off leash and has some ponds the dogs can swim in. Entrance to the dog park is $2.

      Diamond Campground & RV Park

Large Park Near Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak & More

This park is definitely well visited, but for good reason. It is located in Woodland Park, a lovely mountain town about 30-40 min. outside Colorado Springs. Lots of sites, mostly RV but there is a nice tent only section with a good number of spaces. We stayed overnight in early July and actually pitched our tent next to our family RV underneath the awning, safe from the summer showers that seem to pass thru almost daily in the summer months. Lots of amenities, including parks with play equipment for the kiddos, a dog park, nice bathrooms & showers.

      Cherry Creek State Park Campground

A piece of nature tucked into the city.

Located in the city, but once you’re in the park you don’t feel like you’re in the city at all!!! The RV spots have full hookups and are nice and spacious, as are the neighbors. We were able to set up a tent too! Great place to stroll and relax. Beautiful sunsets. Clean bathrooms and laundry facilities with a little vending machine.

A great place for camping (RV and tent spots), fishing, wildlife/nature viewing, hiking, boating (all water activities), has a swim beach, marina, off leash dog park, shooting range, horse stables that you can do a beautiful hour horseback ride.

FEES: Campsites $41 full hookup, basic campsite $28, daily park pass is $11, annual park pass $83, daily dog park pass $3, annual dog park pass $25, and group camping is available too.

      Cherry Creek State Park Campground

      City Camping at it's Best

Great campground here at this state park. We have always stayed in the Arapahoe Group Loop for holiday weekends. Arapahoe Group Loop has a great pavillion with outdoor kitchen and bathroom. Overall Camper amenities are great and very clean. Many well shaded individual sites are available. Campsites are far from other park amenities like Dog Park, Shooting Range, Marina. Swim beach is a 10 minute walk-able distance from campground. Recommend driving to get around the park.

      Chatfield State Park Campground

      So much to do!

Chatfield is such a great park; I’ve spent so much time biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, spending time with family; picnics areas are even great to have lunch. The dog park is by far the best. Off leash- so much room; well taken care of and big lake for the dogs to swim. And it’s close to Denver - so we go here weekly!

      Cherry Creek State Park Campground

Super busy but great for dogs

This is a location that you only camp if you literally don't have any worries about being around people. It is ALWAYS packed due to the tons of hiking trails, huge dog park, and water access.

I taught kayaking to little ones here and it was always a fight to get into the park, get to the water, and not get run over by boats and unexperienced (or entitled) people.

The campground is well maintained but it sit really worth being able to be basically in a metropolitan city? For me I'll go somewhere more nature friendly and less crowded.

BUT it is excellent for dogs. We love taking out dogs here because they can play in water, run their hearts out, and hang out with other dogs. It is pricey to get into the park though. $80 for a year pass to the state parks and another $25 for the dog park fees.

    Guide to Indian Hills

Pet-friendly camping near Indian Hills, Colorado offers access to both mountain recreation and Denver metro amenities. Positioned at elevations between 7,000 and 9,000 feet, this area experiences dramatic temperature swings even in summer, with nighttime temperatures dropping into the 40s. Most campgrounds in this region maintain strict fire restrictions during dry periods, particularly from July through September.

    What to do

Hiking with dogs on adjacent trails: At Buffalo Creek Recreation Area, campers appreciate the extensive trail system. "Great site for a quick weekend getaway. Able to find some privacy off the road. Excellent mountain biking and hiking!" notes Shauna S. The area connects to larger trail networks including the Colorado Trail.

Mountain biking opportunities: The area attracts cyclists of all skill levels. "Great camping spot, esp. if you like mountain biking... plenty of trails for various ability levels," explains Andrew B. about Buffalo Creek. The terrain provides technical challenges while remaining accessible for intermediate riders.

Water recreation options: Chatfield State Park Campground offers reservoir access perfect for dogs who enjoy swimming. "Chatfield is such a great park; I've spent so much time biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, spending time with family," says Jenny P. "The dog park is by far the best. Off leash- so much room; well taken care of and big lake for the dogs to swim."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Early morning drives through Golden Gate Canyon State Park increase chances for wildlife spotting. "Get up early and drive mountain base road...we caught a great view of a moose," shares Diana M. The park's varied elevations and ecosystems support diverse wildlife populations.

    What campers like

Clean, accessible facilities: Reverend's Ridge Campground receives consistent praise for maintenance. "Campground is very clean. Loop E (electric hookups) is very spacious and well laid out. Every campsite is a pull thru allowing you situate anywhere along the paved area to best suit your needs," reports Dennis G.

Proximity to mountain recreation: Campers appreciate locations that balance accessibility with natural settings. "This park has great trails for hiking and mountain biking. There is also a high elevation lake as well as fantastic views of the continental divide," notes Mike M. about Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

Shower and laundry access: Many campgrounds offer practical amenities useful for extended stays with pets. At Clear Creek RV Park, "Staff is extremely helpful and accommodating. They have extremely clean bath houses cleaned daily and coin-op laundry (office has quarters available)," reports Janine R.

Connectivity to walking paths: Access to dog-friendly exercise areas ranks high with pet owners. "Along a gorgeous walking path to the mountains, within immediate walking distance to multiple breweries and restaurants, and extremely accessible to the mountains," continues Janine about Clear Creek RV Park.

    What you should know

Dispersed camping fills quickly: Buffalo Creek's free sites become scarce by mid-week during summer. "This free campground is perfect! There are some sites that are better than others for group sizes and it isn't very RV friendly... We stayed here a couple weekends in a row and we were able to try out some different spots and trails close to those spots," explains Hayley K.

Fire restrictions common: Regulations vary by location and season. "There is an active fire ban in the area and the neighbors were lighting 5ft tall fires with gasoline which put us at risk. If you are going to be camping in BLM or Wildlife Areas please follow the restrictions," warns Hayley K.

Bears active in campgrounds: Wildlife encounters require proper food storage. "When we were there, there were bear in the campground," reports Rich M. about Reverend's Ridge. Since many sites lack bear boxes, proper food storage protocols are essential.

Reservation requirements vary: Chief Hosa Campground has specific reservation procedures. "The process of reserving a site is a little complicated and you have to do it online. You can not call and book a site," explains Kimberly M.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Campgrounds with play facilities make pet-friendly family camping easier. "The scenery is gorgeous with several trails to hike or mountain bike. The campsites are clean and easy to get to. Great for families with little ones," Meghan H. shares about Reverend's Ridge.

Educational opportunities: Golden Gate Canyon provides natural learning experiences. "The 96 fire area to explore and we ended up doing a nice 7 mile loop to get down to the creek for a cool down," notes Hayley K., referring to opportunities to see forest regeneration after wildfires.

Site selection strategy: Choose sites based on specific family needs. "Sites 8 & 9 are extremely unlevel, but the other sites are pretty fine," advises Janine R. about Clear Creek RV Park, important information for families with larger tents or setups.

Weather preparedness: Mountain temperature fluctuations require advance planning. "Weather was super pleasant and cool enough at night to have windows open on July 10th," reports Carly G. about Chief Hosa, highlighting the need for layered clothing even in summer.

    Tips from RVers

Road accessibility concerns: Some campgrounds have challenging access routes. "Spots are a little close, beautiful area w/lots of Hiking, biking, walking trails. Golden is an awesome area to explore & very close to Denver," notes Cynthia H. about Clear Creek RV Park, emphasizing the trade-off between location and site spacing.

Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some campgrounds. "The campground is close to the highway and even with the fans on at night in the pop-up we could still hear some of the highway noise," reports Danielle V. about Chief Hosa Campground, particularly relevant for light sleepers.

Hookup variations: Different campgrounds offer varying levels of services. "Campsite pads are level, wide enough for our slide without being on top of the neighbors, paved like the roads, with wide-enough gravel-and-cement areas between and beautiful mature shade trees everywhere," explains GP about Clear Creek RV Park's full hookup sites.
