Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Lakewood, CO

Chatfield State Park Campground permits pets throughout its grounds, offering spacious sites where campers with dogs can enjoy full hookups including water, electric, and sewer connections. Dakota Ridge RV Park also welcomes pets with designated areas for dog walking and waste disposal. Both campgrounds provide picnic tables at each site, making mealtime convenient for campers and their four-legged companions. The park staff at Dakota Ridge is typically friendly to pets, though some visitors note sites are positioned quite close together which may be challenging for reactive dogs. Full hookup RV sites dominate these properties, with tent camping also available for those traveling lighter with their pets. Fire restrictions vary by location and season, with Chatfield generally permitting campfires while Dakota Ridge prohibits them.

Several hiking trails near these pet-friendly campgrounds allow leashed dogs, with the ridge behind Dakota Ridge offering accessible paths directly from the camping area. Standley Lake Regional Park Campground provides additional pet-friendly options from May through September, featuring a mix of RV sites, tent camping, cabins and yurts that accommodate pets. The nearby convenience market across from Dakota Ridge serves as a useful stop for pet supplies. Road noise affects some campsites, particularly those positioned closer to main thoroughfares or the motorcycle bar across from Dakota Ridge. Most campgrounds in the area enforce standard pet policies including leash requirements, waste cleanup, and noise control to maintain a peaceful environment for all campers. Weather in this region can change quickly, requiring pet owners to monitor conditions for animal safety, particularly during summer months when pavement can become too hot for paw pads.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

Popular and large campground near the lake

As it is very close to the city, the temperature stays consistent with Denver temps. So in the summer, it will not be as cool as some mountain spots. That being said, it is very easy to get to and you’ll have the lake right there to cool off!

Entrance into the state park is about $7/day. There is a dog park within the state park that allows off leash and has some ponds the dogs can swim in. Entrance to the dog park is $2.

    Diamond Campground & RV Park

Large Park Near Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak & More

This park is definitely well visited, but for good reason. It is located in Woodland Park, a lovely mountain town about 30-40 min. outside Colorado Springs. Lots of sites, mostly RV but there is a nice tent only section with a good number of spaces. We stayed overnight in early July and actually pitched our tent next to our family RV underneath the awning, safe from the summer showers that seem to pass thru almost daily in the summer months. Lots of amenities, including parks with play equipment for the kiddos, a dog park, nice bathrooms & showers.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

A piece of nature tucked into the city.

Located in the city, but once you’re in the park you don’t feel like you’re in the city at all!!! The RV spots have full hookups and are nice and spacious, as are the neighbors. We were able to set up a tent too! Great place to stroll and relax. Beautiful sunsets. Clean bathrooms and laundry facilities with a little vending machine.

A great place for camping (RV and tent spots), fishing, wildlife/nature viewing, hiking, boating (all water activities), has a swim beach, marina, off leash dog park, shooting range, horse stables that you can do a beautiful hour horseback ride.

FEES: Campsites $41 full hookup, basic campsite $28, daily park pass is $11, annual park pass $83, daily dog park pass $3, annual dog park pass $25, and group camping is available too.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

    City Camping at it's Best

Great campground here at this state park. We have always stayed in the Arapahoe Group Loop for holiday weekends. Arapahoe Group Loop has a great pavillion with outdoor kitchen and bathroom. Overall Camper amenities are great and very clean. Many well shaded individual sites are available. Campsites are far from other park amenities like Dog Park, Shooting Range, Marina. Swim beach is a 10 minute walk-able distance from campground. Recommend driving to get around the park.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

Super busy but great for dogs

This is a location that you only camp if you literally don't have any worries about being around people. It is ALWAYS packed due to the tons of hiking trails, huge dog park, and water access.

I taught kayaking to little ones here and it was always a fight to get into the park, get to the water, and not get run over by boats and unexperienced (or entitled) people.

The campground is well maintained but it sit really worth being able to be basically in a metropolitan city? For me I'll go somewhere more nature friendly and less crowded.

BUT it is excellent for dogs. We love taking out dogs here because they can play in water, run their hearts out, and hang out with other dogs. It is pricey to get into the park though. $80 for a year pass to the state parks and another $25 for the dog park fees.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

    So much to do!

Chatfield is such a great park; I’ve spent so much time biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, spending time with family; picnics areas are even great to have lunch. The dog park is by far the best. Off leash- so much room; well taken care of and big lake for the dogs to swim. And it’s close to Denver - so we go here weekly!

Guide to Lakewood

Situated at an elevation of 5,500 feet, Lakewood offers camping options between the urban amenities of Denver and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The area experiences 300 days of sunshine annually with temperatures ranging from 20°F in winter to mid-90s in summer. Most pet-friendly campgrounds near Lakewood operate seasonally from May through September, though some remain open year-round.

What to do

Hiking with dogs: Access multiple trail systems from Clear Creek RV Park in Golden where "There is so much to do at this location; aside from the sectioned off RV area, there are lots of paths and locals parks to adventure around." Dogs can enjoy the designated trails along the creek where "Tubing & swimming in the creek is wonderful especially in summertime."

Water recreation: Standley Lake Regional Park offers water activities from May to September. "Rent a floatation device or bring your own and enjoy the warmth on the lake." The park provides canoes, paddle bikes, and paddle boards for rental, making it convenient for campers without equipment.

Wildlife viewing: Bird watching opportunities abound at Standley Lake where visitors can observe "a huge lake that bald eagles nest beside. With a rookery, this is the spot for bird enthusiasts!" The visitor center features a live "Eagle Cam" TV with footage of endangered Bald eagles nesting.

What campers like

Proximity to nature and city: Chief Hosa Campground offers a balance between accessibility and natural surroundings. Located "right off Interstate 70" with sites that are "easy to get into," this campground provides "nice small trails in area for easy walking" while being just minutes from urban amenities.

Clean facilities: Many campers appreciate the well-maintained restrooms at Cherry Creek State Park Campground where "bathrooms were very clean" and showers, though requiring payment ($1.50 for five minutes), are modern. "The bathrooms are clean and park rangers monitored the area often" at many facilities in the area.

Mountain views: The elevated location of campgrounds provides scenic vistas. At Denver West-Central City KOA, "the sites all have great views" and campers note being "perched up in between the most beautiful outlooks." One reviewer mentioned they "stayed on the upper level of the park to have the views" for the best perspective.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Book sites well in advance, especially during peak summer months. At Golden Gate Canyon State Park, "Campground is very clean. Loop E (electric hookups) is very spacious and well laid out," but these premium sites fill quickly.

Cost considerations: Most campgrounds charge daily entrance fees in addition to camping fees. Cherry Creek requires "an $11 day pass fee not included in your camping stay" while other parks have similar separate entrance charges that can add $9-12 per day to your total.

Site spacing: Density varies significantly between campgrounds. At some locations, "the campsites are very close" and you might feel "very close to your neighbors," while others offer "Plenty of space between sites, electricity. Wooded and scenic."

Pet policies: Most campgrounds require dogs to remain on leashes no longer than 6 feet. Some locations have added restrictions; one camper noted "Portable dog pens are not allowed. Tethering is not allowed" and that they "can only be on a 6 ft leash attached to a human."

Tips for camping with families

Look for kid-friendly amenities: Several campgrounds offer dedicated facilities for children. Reverend's Ridge Campground is noted as "Great for families with little ones" with "many multiuse trails" where families can enjoy outdoor activities together.

Choose sites away from noise: Position tents away from highways or late-night venues. Some campers report that "the highway is busy and noisy" and "the bars across the road are noisy with loud music." Request sites furthest from main roads when making reservations.

Plan for weather changes: Colorado weather can shift rapidly. Pack layers and rain gear even in summer. Temperatures at higher elevation campgrounds can drop to "freezing at night" even during warm months, requiring additional preparation for family comfort.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Full service connections vary between parks. At Chatfield State Park, expect "Full hookup RV sites" with "water, electric, and sewer connections" while other locations may offer only "electric-only (full hook up spots for extended stays were already taken)."

Road access considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging approach roads. RVers should note that access may be "a bit breathtaking" with mountain roads that can be "tricky to get to" for larger vehicles. Check road grades and turning radii before booking.

Leveling requirements: Prepare for uneven terrain at many sites. One camper warned, "The site doesn't have even a hint of a levelable spot" while others mentioned "Most sites are not necessarily level" requiring "blocks" to stabilize RVs properly.
