Cowans Gap State Park offers camping in south-central Pennsylvania's mountainous terrain at an elevation of 1,000 feet. The campground provides both tent and RV sites with pet-friendly options in Loop A. During summer, daytime temperatures typically range from 75-85°F, while nighttime temperatures can drop to 55-65°F, making campfires practical even in warmer months.
What to do
Balanced Rock trail: Visitors to Trough Creek State Park Campground can explore the unique geological formation. "It has a nice hike up above a creek with a huge rock that appears ready to fall over the cliff with a simple touch. Very neat," notes Nick S., who rated the park 4 stars.
Lake swimming: The sand beach at Cowans Gap State Park Campground provides designated swimming areas with summer lifeguards on duty. "Awesome beach, nice sights, and a quiet area what more could you want," shares Danielle W. The beach area includes changing facilities and a concession stand open during peak season.
Mountain biking: Seven Points offers access to the Allegrippis Trail system with 36 miles of purpose-built single track. "The mtb trails begin just above the upper camp loops and provide a full day of fast flowing singletrack," reports Travis S., who frequents the area for biking.
What campers like
Water access: Seven Points (PA) provides direct lakefront sites for boating and fishing. "There was a path through much of it but that path didn't seem to go all the way to our loop. There was obviously boat noise at times but you're at the lake. In fact, several sites allowed for boat tie ups right at your site," explains Laure D.
Clean facilities: Bathhouses at campgrounds receive regular maintenance across the region. "The bathhouse with showers was located at the other end of the loop; a little bit of a walk. It had three regular showers and one large handicap accessible shower," says Sarah N. about Cowans Gap facilities.
Technology breaks: Limited connectivity allows for genuine outdoor experiences. "Our first time at Cowans Gap and we loved it. 5 nights, 6 days with no cell or wifi to stress us out," shares Tom R., who stayed at site 14. Some campgrounds have zero cellular reception, particularly in valley areas.
What you should know
Reservation timing: Waterfront sites fill quickly at Susquehannock, often booking months in advance. "There aren't many waterfront sites, so book early. Some sites not listed as waterfront can be used for boats (with a permit from the campground office)," advises Deanna B.
Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds feature sloped terrain requiring additional equipment. "Most of the campsites are on a slight slope but they're still bearable. Also a lot of them are waterfront sites which is convenient for swimming in the summer," notes Madelyn D. about Susquehannock.
Generator noise: Some areas experience mechanical noise pollution. "The major negative was generator noise coming from the facility just beyond the dam. Droning generator noise was on/off at all hours of the day and went on until 10pm in the evening," reports Brian C. about his Cowans Gap stay.
Tips for camping with families
Playground options: Lake Raystown Resort offers multiple recreational areas for children. "There's a few different areas of the campground. Large marina, prepared food is expensive though. Tackle shop and craft days, playground, overall great place," says Elgin S.
Campsite selection: Consider proximity to bathrooms for families with young children. "We went to Cowans gap last full for a Halloween weekend and the children loved it. We even won the campsite decorating contest," shares Danielle W., who found the park family-friendly.
Water safety: Boat traffic creates wakes on Raystown Lake throughout daylight hours. "Be prepared to be woken by bass boats and subsequent wake at sunrise," warns Ian W. about Susquehannock waterfront camping. Life jackets are required for children under 12 near water.
Tips from RVers
Dump station amenities: Point Campground offers efficient waste disposal options. "From the time we arrived and filled up the fresh water tank at the ultra-cool 4 lane dump station, I knew we were in for a great weekend. The signage was very well marked and the fresh water spigot was more like a little tank, super-solid, clean and modern," reports Tim J.
Dog friendly campgrounds near Waterfall: Consider designated pet areas when selecting sites. "Pet friendly spaces 1-30, Campground A," confirms Staci R. about Cowans Gap. Leash requirements apply throughout all dog-friendly campgrounds near Waterfall, Pennsylvania.
Site leveling: Many campgrounds feature gravel or uneven pads requiring blocks. "One backup attempt into the site and (according to our LevelMatePRO app) it was perfectly level...that was definitely a first for us," notes Tim J. about his experience at Ridge Camp in Seven Points.
