Seasonal considerations shape the camping experience near Ravenna. Many campgrounds operate from April through October, though West Branch State Park remains open year-round. Most established sites require advance reservations, especially for summer weekends and holiday periods when waterfront locations fill quickly. The region experiences typical Midwest seasonal patterns with humid summers and cold winters. Cell service varies throughout the area, with some campgrounds reporting limited connectivity. Water activities represent a significant draw for many visitors, with several campgrounds providing direct access to lakes and reservoirs. As one camper noted, "Many lakefront sites. Quiet, woodsy and very well-maintained state park campground. Great showerhouses and very nice playground."

Campers consistently praise the water recreation opportunities available at campgrounds surrounding Ravenna. West Branch State Park receives particularly high ratings for its lake views, beach access, and boat launch facilities. Several visitors mention the family-friendly atmosphere and well-maintained facilities as highlights. The proximity to Cuyahoga Valley National Park, approximately 25 miles northwest, provides additional recreational opportunities for day trips. While most developed campgrounds feature basic amenities like restrooms and drinking water, the level of privacy between sites varies significantly. A reviewer described West Branch as "a true gem" noting that "the campground is relatively new" with "nicely spaced" sites that include full hookups on level concrete pads. Some campgrounds near Ravenna also provide laundry facilities, camp stores, and playgrounds, making them suitable for extended stays.

      Punderson State Park Campground

      Quiet and Lush

Our site was level, although I observed many that are not. It was fairly quiet, although the sites are pretty small. Ours was described as 'waterfront', but it was so overgrown between the site and the shoreline that there was no access and the lake wasn't visible. Bathrooms were very clean and the shower worked great.

      Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

      Relaxing and peaceful

Mosquito Lake gets a bad rap because of its name. We had such a great time launching our kayak from our campsite! I’ve attached a highlighted map marked with the sights on or very close to the water to launch a kayak. Additional kayak launch sites available around the park if you can’t get one of these. It’s great campground if you have kids or a dog. Plenty of great playgrounds and a dog park/dog beach. The camp host was very nice and welcoming. The wash house has laundry and showers. Everything was clean.

      Perry Township Park

      Great view of Lake Erie!

Gated and private campground. You can come and go as you please 24/7 with a gate card. Secure and clean bathrooms. Laundry room. Camp store and more. Wi-Fi is available. But the view on being right on lake Erie is the best. It's a must campground, at least once.

      Perry Township Park

      Perry Township Park and Campground

Another pleasant stay at this campground! We had made our reservations online prior to our stay and the process was super easy. And as always, the campground host was very friendly and helpful. Unlike a lot of city parks I've been to, this one is behind a gate and the showers/restrooms have codes you're provided with during check-in, so that helps keep things safe, quiet, and clean. I still haven't used the showers here, but the separate restrooms were spotless. The park itself is nice and was busy with families enjoying outdoor activities. Everyone was also respectful during quiet hours.

      Silver Springs Campground

      Nice local park

Nice place to stay for the weekend. Inexpensive. No water hookups at the individual sites but potable water is available in the park. The downsides are the sights can get muddy if there is rain. Only portapotties nearby.

We had big storms roll through when we were there. Unfortunately a large branch broke off of a nearby tree and hit the engine hood of our RV and dented it in several places. It could have been much worse though and not the park’s fault. Could happen anywhere there are trees.

      Shenango Recreation Area Campground

      Great clean place

Came tent camping here. Stayed on new duck loop, which from the looks of all the other sites, this one seemed more open, less R. V. Campers. Plenty of open spots even for the weekend. Place is clean, well kept, bathrooms are clean which is a plus. All the sites around have decent space between them. Close access to a lake. You can bring your boat

      Headwaters Park

      Campsite A

Had a nice stay at the Camp Site A tent site, which they label as their ADA Accessible site.

Overall me and the kids had a really nice time hanging atbthe site and exploring around the lake. Lots of friendly people too.

      Pros:

      • Tent site was generally good with a picnic table and fire pit on-site
      • Pull in parking right next to the campsite (which seems to be true for all tents and leantos)
      • Great walkable area with lots to explore with the kids
      • A few nice things just a 10min drive away like the Eagle Park splash park and playground and the cute Burton town square.
      • Tons of birds for all my bird watchers
      • Right at the entrance to the tent site area and right next to the restrooms
      • Sometimes people bring horses down there for a walk
      • Can't see other campers tent from your site (which i like because Im out here to get away from people)

      Cons:

      • Being right next the restrooms and tent area entrance is a higher traffic area. Didn't bother us much but could get annoying if woken up by a late night driver or door slam
      • The stump on the tent site has a snake in it. Didn't bother us at all, only saw it once as it was slithering away, but thought other might like to know.
      • Toilet was out of hand sanitizer

      FAQ:

      • No electic
      • No plumbing or showers (it is basically an outhouse)

      Clay's Resort Jellystone Park

NO communication and severely lacking customer service skills

I won’t rate the other categories yet but I’ve been upset the whole process trying to plan my trip and the people have made it impossible. I’m constantly unable to get ahold of the park. I keep getting put on the“call back list” when trying to modify a reservation only for NO ONE to ever call back. I finally get ahold of someone after a MONTH… only to have zero customer service skills… they just said“oh we don’t even have a call list” so I ask for another form of communication I can have with me since my trip is in a month and I’ve had these issues for a month… they offer ZERO solutions and are not empathetic either. Another issue was last year I was hospitalized for several months due to an early twin birth so I had to push my trip to the following year… when I FINALLY got ahold of the park last year the women I spoke with trying to manage the rescheduling…was ZERO help surprise surprise… on top of that it took 13 calls and weeks before a manager got back to me…making the window to reschedule or get refunds closer to closing adding stress that you might not get to make your next move how you’d like… anyway…I simply asked for dates that matched the costs that we already paid for the trip so I didn’t have to pay more… I simply asked for it to be within the summer days since my previous reservation was during the summer time with all the extra water park and amenities that close at the end of August. I booked when my kid could use all amenities and there were no hour restrictions either due to still being in season. However the lady couldn’t accommodate or recommend any alternate dates to suite my trip that weren’t several hundred dollars more… now we started out with a trip all paid for last year with all amenities no hour restrictions to a weekend we had to pay more and are restricted hours wise on the summer amenities. As the person doing reservations you should be able to recommend dates and help me plan the trip accordingly to the money spent and not sit on the other end of the phone demanding I just give you dates…. After our trip we will never plan or schedule anything at this park again. Regardless of the amenities… for families traveling far distances you couldn’t make it anymore inconvenient, difficult, and time consuming for simply planning questions or just getting ahold of you in general. No sorrys…. Just a whole lot of…”hmm that’s weird well oh well, next” kind of attitude. Zero solutions just excuses. So that being first impressions not too excited to find out what we are in for when we arrive. Especially reading other reviews about deflated balls so you can’t use the hoops, broken a/c units that the property won’t even handle that their own employees have to give up their own personal comfort cause management won’t?… concession stands trash everywhere… broken hot tubs, WiFi not working in cabins for night time with children is tough…sad that my family’s first camping trip ever hasnt even happened yet and it’s been nothing but a headache to plan because of the staff. Yall make money to make the experience smooth for your consumers but somebody missed the memo.

    Guide to Ravenna

Campgrounds surrounding Ravenna, Ohio sit within the glaciated Allegheny Plateau, characterized by rolling hills and numerous lakes formed during the last ice age. Winter temperatures often drop below 20°F from December through February, while summer camping season brings humidity levels frequently exceeding 70%. Most tent campsite areas near Ravenna, Ohio require advance planning during peak season when weekend occupancy rates reach 90-100% at popular parks.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: Nearly year-round fishing at West Branch State Park Campground where visitors can access 2,650 acres of lake water. "We can launch our kayaks right from our campsite. The park office loans games and sports equipment to campers. There are many inlets to explore or fish," shares one camper who visits annually.

Hiking trails: Varied terrain within 30 miles ranging from flat lakeside paths to more challenging rocky formations. "This area is filled magnificent trails that you wouldn't believe are so close to a highly populated city. This is actually under the bridge that you take to enter the City of Akron. Lovely place to fish, hike, camp, paddle, or just relax for the day," notes a visitor to Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Water activities: Multiple swimming options including natural lakes and pool facilities. A camper at Berlin Lake reports: "Very nice and clean campground with many access point to the the lake. Our camp site was in close proximity to the restroom facilities. We were fourtante that our spot was right beside the lake and we could keep the boat docked their during our stay."

    What campers like

Site privacy levels: Wooded seclusion at certain parks with natural buffers between campsites. At Silver Springs Campground, "The sites are nice and large. The main problem was very hard to level and soft grass they don't have a well compacted area for your tt/rv. Would be nice to have bathroom built on the campground. Have to walk to the baseball field to use the bathrooms."

Budget-friendly options: Affordable alternatives to state parks with comparable amenities. "Low cost for staying ($18 for a waterside, spacious site for up to 8 people, 2 tents at no additional costs). Numerous fishing and open swimming opportunities (basically anywhere you want along the water)," reports a visitor to Mill Creek Camping.

Unique camping experiences: Non-traditional sites for those seeking something different. "It seems like the sites are good sized but some are on slopes even the pads so make sure to bring stuff to level. Bathrooms were clean separate showers verizon works well here," notes a recent visitor to West Branch State Park.

    What you should know

Unlevel sites: Prepare for sloping terrain at many campgrounds across the region. At Punderson State Park Campground, one camper warns: "The camp grounds for RV's is not the best. Very few full hookups. Rest of the sites only have 15-20 amp service. The lots are not even close the level. You will need a lot of blocks to get close to level. Saw one RV with auto levelers with his tire about foot off the ground."

Bathroom facilities vary significantly: Some parks offer modern facilities while others provide basic options. "The bathrooms are portojons and there are no showers, however there is THE best dog park I have ever seen in this area. So my dogs loved this campground more than me and that was worth it," explains a visitor to Silver Springs Campground.

Water quality concerns: Some campgrounds experience water issues. "The water fill is on an incline so when our tank was 'full' pulling away from fill station it was really only 2/3 full. This was okay for a short weekend but not good planning from who ever designed the park," reports a West Branch camper.

    Tips for camping with families

Dog-friendly locations: Accommodations for four-legged family members at several parks with dedicated pet areas. A visitor to Countryside Campground shares: "Clean campground, lots to do! Dog friendly! Lake Accessible. We stayed a few nights on Tent site 4 and had a blast! Stop at Duma Meats to grill something delicious!"

Planned activities: Scheduled events for children during peak season. "We went to this nice little spot with 4 kids, the hound and my wife. The 9 tent sites are very large and spacious. It is mostly an established Rv Park. The community was very kind. Showers were clean and spacious," reports a Countryside Campground visitor.

Playground access: Multiple options for young visitors ranging from simple to elaborate. At Streetsboro KOA, a visitor notes: "We had a nice time with our kids, friends and dogs. The dog park was a bonus... we camped right next to it. perfect! playground, big open area and a nice pool!"

    Tips from RVers

Hookup limitations: Electrical capacity challenges at several area campgrounds. "I stayed at site #4, was much more level and full shade. There is also a wooded walking trail network on the east and North sides of the campground," shares a Silver Springs visitor regarding site selection.

Site access considerations: Prepare for tight turns at some facilities. A visitor to Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA advises: "Only an overnight stop during a bigger trip but it seemed nice. They were accommodating to our late arrival and left a map and gate key at the office for the late arrivers. The site was level and easy to hook up to."

Seasonal availability: Limited options during winter months with restricted facilities. "Clean and efficient. Campsites close together, but quiet. Can be muddy when you get a lot of rain - if you can afford it, get the pull through site," recommends a visitor about their stay experience.
