    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

The wooded landscapes surrounding Wellington, Ohio feature several established campgrounds within a 30-minute drive, with Findley State Park Campground serving as the centerpiece of local camping options. This year-round state park offers a mix of tent sites, RV hookups, and cabins arranged along cul-de-sac "arms" that provide a sense of privacy despite relatively close spacing. American Wilderness Campground in nearby Grafton and Rustic Lakes Campground in Sullivan complement the state park with similar amenities but operate seasonally from spring through mid-October. Claremar Twin Lakes Camping Resort, located directly in Wellington, provides a more intimate setting with only five designated sites but maintains standard amenities including electric hookups, shower facilities, and dump stations for RVs.

Most campgrounds in the Wellington area require advance reservations, particularly during summer weekends when facilities reach capacity. The camping season peaks from May through October, with many private campgrounds closing entirely during winter months. Findley State Park remains accessible year-round but offers reduced services during colder seasons. As one camper noted, "If you're looking for a quiet place to hang your pole for a weekend, this near-city escape is for you! Less than an hour from downtown Cleveland, and minutes from historic downtowns Wellington and Oberlin, Ohio, is a quiet, wooded retreat with all the amenities." Poison oak appears in some wooded areas, particularly at Findley State Park, requiring awareness when exploring off-site.

Campers consistently mention the wooded settings and lake access as highlights of the Wellington area camping experience. Findley Lake offers fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and a small public beach with boat rentals available at the state park. Sites at most campgrounds include standard fire rings and picnic tables, with firewood typically available for purchase on-site. While privacy between sites is limited at most locations, the mature tree canopy helps create a more secluded atmosphere. Families appreciate the playgrounds and recreational facilities, with Findley State Park featuring an extensive disc golf course among its trails. Proximity to historic downtown Wellington and Oberlin provides convenient access to additional services and attractions when supplies are needed.

      East Harbor State Park Campground

      Clean, adequate state park

We came when there had been a lot of rain, the original site we had reserved had a lot of standing water and mud and a big drop off the paved area, so we asked if we could switch. For a $6 change fee we were able to move. They do have some full hookup sites, but those are hard to come by. It is a huge campgeound and the sites are all very close to one another. The bathrooms were clean, I didn't use the showers, but they looked clean. They had a small, simple laundry facility that worked as needed. The hiking in the park wasn't too exciting. There is a disk golf course wr checked out, but it was pretty rainy off and on during our stay so we didn't play. Biking within the Park was good, with some well laid out paths. Overall nothing too exciting, but very adequate for what we needed to explore a little of what Lake Erie has to offer.

      Camp Sandusky

Bed bug infested! Poorly managed. This place has gone down hill!

We had to leave in the middle of the night due to a bed bug infestation. We let staff know we were putting our belongings out side and would come back in the morning. When we came back in the morning the owner would not issue a refund and instead insulted us. The whole situation was so unbelievably weird. I wish I would've read through all the reviews before booking. This seems to be an ongoing issue with them and the owner couldnt be less bothered. People like him are the reason Ohio bed bug issue will remain a problem! What we thought was going to be relaxed getaway turned out to be a very expensive nightmare. The craziest part of it all is this happend Friday evening/ Saturday morning and as of Monday he is already trying to rent that same cabin out to another family on camping sites. Don't go to Camp Sandusky. Its not worth it. I hope this helps someone!

      Gotta Getaway RV Park

      NOT A FAMILY CAMPGROUND

Not a safe environment for children. The little man at the desk is ok with it too, he claims he kicked us all out but my video I took when confronting him on the situation differs. He also keeps deleting reviews and replying back with blatant lies. If you read through the negative reviews you can see he can’t admit when he’s wrong, it’s always everyone else who’s wrong. I don’t want money back from this joke of a campground and I don’t care what the owner has to say. What I want is to save everyone else from wasting a perfectly good camping trip on a trashy place. It was so bad we DECIDED on our own to leave and camp elsewhere. Aside from the sketchy seasonal campers, the amenities also are trash. The pond is all muck, sites are water and electric only with dirt pads. I have never seen such a hillbilly set up. The pool is ok. Dump station was probably my favorite amenity, dumping our tanks to leave that place! But even that is set up at the entrance so when dumping you can block the incoming campers. I will never be back to this place, let me verify with the video I took, WE WERE NOT KICKED OUT. We left on our own because our CHILDREN DID NOT FEEL SAFE!

South Bass Island State Park Campground

      Well run state park

Some sites have full hookup. Some have just electric. Some are for tents only. Several bath houses that are dated but surprisingly clean. There are not trash receptacles everywhere but rather one area with several dumpsters. Sites are blacktop paved with various degrees of levelness. The whole campground is shaded so can get muddy after rain and smokey from campfires. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Park staff are helpful and camp hosts do a great job. All in all a good for a state park.

      Malabar Farm State Park Campground

      Peaceful and Primitive

Second time here. Quiet, except for the birds chirping.

Only 3 other campsites in use on an August weekend.

      Water and pit toilet.

Enough At&t cell service to connect, but it's not great.

      East Harbor State Park Campground

Great spot for a quick stop

Stopped off for the night en route to the UP of Michigan. As other user mention the sites on the D loop are great for a small van. Kind of a busy campground but fairly quiet midweek. Went for a walk at sunset and saw a bunch of deer and rabbits. Would definitely return if I'm in the area again.

      Silver Springs Campground

      Nice local park

Nice place to stay for the weekend. Inexpensive. No water hookups at the individual sites but potable water is available in the park. The downsides are the sights can get muddy if there is rain. Only portapotties nearby.

We had big storms roll through when we were there. Unfortunately a large branch broke off of a nearby tree and hit the engine hood of our RV and dented it in several places. It could have been much worse though and not the park’s fault. Could happen anywhere there are trees.

      Tall Timbers Campground

      Compact, bathhouses underwhelming

Campground is well labeled and maintained. Sites are very very close together but this was expected. The bathhouses were extremely disappointing considering there are no full hookups and the price to stay here at a “resort.” They were both full of spider webs, had very dingy fixtures, and did not live up to the rest of the camp.

    Guide to Wellington

Camping spots near Wellington, Ohio feature a mix of state park and private facilities located in the gently rolling landscapes of Lorain County. The area receives about 38 inches of annual rainfall, creating lush wooded environments around several small lakes and reservoirs. Most campgrounds sit at elevations between 800-900 feet above sea level, providing moderate temperatures that range from summer highs around 82°F to winter lows near 20°F.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Sunset Lake Campground, campers can access multiple fishing lakes with various species. "My wife and I visited in early May 2023, they were just starting to open things up after drying out. The camp hosts were super friendly about helping get us arranged and everything we needed," notes a reviewer.

Disc golf course: Findley State Park Campground offers an extensive trail system with a disc golf course that winds through wooded areas. "Wonderful state park with lots of trails and a lake. Took the kayaks out on the lake and had a great time," reports Linda R.

Kayaking and water activities: Multiple campgrounds offer water recreation. "We loved the beach and the fun we have had this is our favorite place to camp," mentions one visitor to American Wilderness Campground, which features a swimming beach and kayak rentals.

    What campers like

Clean shower facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained bathroom facilities. "The grounds and bathrooms were super clean and staff very friendly and helpful," notes a reviewer at Camp Hiyo. Another camper at Findley State Park commented, "Oddly, the high point was the shower house. Either new or remodeled recently, it was clean and comfortable (not always a given!)."

Spacious wooded sites: Sunset Lake Campground receives praise for site layout: "The grounds are clean and the sites are very well spaced." Schaun Acres Campgrounds also offers good spacing between campsites according to reviews.

Swimming options: Pier-Lon Park features a designated swimming lake. "A nice lake for swimming & catch/release fishing," notes one reviewer. Similar water recreation options exist at multiple Wellington area campgrounds, with American Wilderness Campground offering a "beautiful clean serene park with absolutely stunning beach views at sunset."

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds require advance booking, especially during summer months. "Only downfall is trying to find an open spot for reservations. Place is booked most of the time. If you're planning a holiday weekend you need to book 6 months in advance," advises Jeffrey L. about Findley State Park.

Seasonal operations: Many private campgrounds close entirely during winter months. Rustic Lakes Campground operates from May 1 to October 15, while Schaun Acres Campgrounds runs from May 1 to October 1. "This is a very quiet and relaxing campground," notes a Sunset Lake visitor.

Site variations: Campsite quality and size can vary significantly within the same facility. At Findley State Park, one camper advised: "I would recommend doing some research on campsites as they range from small to large for the same price. The original site I booked was a tent site too small for 2 tents however I was able to switch to another sight which was larger."

    Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Cleveland/Sandusky Jellystone Park offers extensive children's programming. "Large campground with a nice mix of seasonal and overnighters. Clean common areas. Nice pool, camp store on site with a nice selection of camp gear. Snack bar with pizza, ice cream etc. Tons of planned activities for the kids," reports one family.

Swimming safety: Supervised swimming areas vary by campground. At Pier-Lon Park, "No alcohol, lake to swim or fish" creates a family-friendly atmosphere according to Daniel S.

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds feature dedicated play areas. Schaun Acres receives strong family reviews: "This is a great place to camp with family. They have a swimming pool which my grandkids had a blast in the pool and they also have daily activities for kids and adults very clean. The grandkids keep asking to go back."

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Electric service varies between campgrounds, with some offering both 30-amp and 50-amp connections. "There are only so many sites available with electric but if you do not require electricity, you can get spaces away from the people and have a nice bit of privacy," notes a reviewer at Findley State Park.

Site conditions: Terrain and surface conditions merit consideration. At Sunset Lake Campground, "Many of the sites are grassy and I could see the potential to get stuck if you ended up in heavy rains. Mobile service was decent in most parts of the park although our spot F30 was on the fringe for usable video."

Length restrictions: Some campgrounds have limitations for larger rigs. While most accommodate standard-sized RVs, verify length restrictions before booking, especially at the smaller private campgrounds around Wellington.
