The Sussex area of northern New Jersey sits at elevations ranging from 400 to 1,800 feet, creating varied terrain for campers. The region's hardwood forests provide natural shade for summer camping when temperatures typically range from 60-85°F. Fall camping offers colorful foliage displays along with cooler nighttime temperatures that often drop to the 40s.
What to do
Hiking trails exploration: High Point State Park Campground offers access to over 50 miles of trails with varying difficulty levels. "I spent two nights camping with my niece and this campground was perfect. The site was maybe a 50-yard walk-in and we barely heard anyone around us and had a real wilderness feel. We fit in a hike up to the Appalachian Trail from our campsite," notes Justin P.
Fishing opportunities: Swartswood State Park features multiple fishing spots throughout the area. "Sussex county is beautiful. Stokes is such a peaceful campground! We stay in the cabins. It's great to have the small kitchen when camping with the family. A must see campground," says Amy B. at Stokes State Forest.
Wildlife observation: The natural setting offers chances to spot local wildlife. "We had our first bear encounter which was exciting. Three black bears strolled by the campsite next to ours in the early morning — gave us more of an energy boost after a sleepless night than our coffee!" shares Kaitlyn S.
Water recreation: Many campsites provide lake access for various activities. "We went to Stokes for a one nighter to test out my new truck tent. We stayed at site 11 on Lake Ocquittunk. It was a fair sized site with room for a couple large tents. Site was located on a small hill next to the lake with the road directly in front and water about 50 yards away," reports Josh S.
What campers like
Secluded camping spots: High Point State Park Campground offers more private sites away from crowds. "Stayed 2 nights and it was really nice. Camping for summer is pretty limited to Sawmill Lake, as the other locations are for groups or winter camping. Camps are secluded from each other and most if not all have an elevated space to put tents or chairs," reports Damia F.
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain good hygiene standards. "The bathroom and shower area was very clean," notes Kaitlyn S. about her stay at Swartswood State Park, despite having other concerns about her experience.
Diverse accommodation options: Beyond traditional camping, glamping near Sussex, New Jersey provides alternative lodging. "We stayed at the campsite at Lake Ocquittunk Area. Campsite was very spacious and had a platform where we were able to fit two tents. There was plenty of space on the site for more tents," shares E.M.V.
Group-friendly sites: Kittatinny Campground caters well to larger gatherings. "My college friends go here each year to meet up and we have so much fun. The group sites are great and perfect for our 30-50 people. Definitely go for the rafting/tubing package, it was the best part of the trip!" says Maggie K.
What you should know
Site selection matters: Research specific sites before booking. "I chose this campsite, 031, based on the photos on the reservation website and boy was I disappointed. We wanted to setup our large tent on the flat gravel driveway and our hammocks and relaxation area on the platform. The photos did not convey the actual steepness of this site!" warns Dwight D. about Swartswood State Park Campground.
Seasonal operation: Most Sussex area camping locations operate seasonally. "Upon arrival we had a bit of a mix up. Someone was planted in our assigned spot. After a phone call, all was ok. The farm has goats, a donkey, and a pony within the campground. Very cool. Weekend was busy as usual but during the week it seems to be seasonal that stay," reports Faith D.
Varying noise levels: Some campgrounds are quieter than others. "When making reservations it said almost all sites were full but upon arrival the vast majority of sites were empty which made for a quiet/relaxing night," shares Josh S. about his experience at Stokes State Forest.
Wildlife awareness: Campers should prepare for local wildlife. "Remember, this is bear country so proper food storage is a must. Bear lockers are not provided. The area also has ticks and rattlesnakes," notes one reviewer about camping in the region.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Great Divide Campground offers numerous options for children. "Kids had lots of fun on the free kayaks and pool. Staff was friendly and helpful. Campgrounds have lots of hills so be prepared to hike up and down," advises Jojo P.
Animal encounters: Some sites feature farms or animal areas. "The farm has goats, a donkey, and a pony within the campground. Very cool," shares Faith D. about her family's stay at Kymers Camping Resort, a popular glamping destination near Sussex.
Pool facilities: Swimming options are available at several locations. "The pool was probably the nicest thing about the site. It had plenty of umbrella seating area and a large mushroom shower thing," notes Ethan K. about Harmony Ridge Farm & Campgrounds.
Platform tent sites: Many camping areas offer raised platforms. "Most sites are level. Some areas are a little steeper then I would like to set up on, but that's me. Nice small lake with boats to use. Nice small beach. Lots of weekend activities," reports Scott N.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation provides essential services for RVers. "Very clean and quiet. Website lists water hook ups at long distances but they have hose reels to help with that. Our site (15) said 75' however the 50' hose reel made it to our rv connection. Trash dumpster is an easy walk and the dump station has a flush hose point," shares an RV camper.
Site leveling considerations: Check campground terrain before arrival. "You can drive to High Point monument that is 1803 feet above sea level and you get a spectacular panorama view. There are hiking trails and fresh water for kayaking. The campsite are ok, a little small and there is a pit toilet on site, but flush toilet and hot showers are 5 min drive," explains Yolanda T.
Seasonal planning: RV sites have different availability windows. "This is a great place to get away and bring your family and dogs. They offer several planned activities for kids and they have nice facilities like a great swimming pool and ping pong," notes Ethan K. about Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort.
