## Overview

Dry Wolf Cabin is located about 20 miles southwest of Stanford, Montana, in the Little Belt Mountains. The rustic cabin is conveniently located along Dry Wolf Creek, providing a pleasant setting for anglers, wildlife watchers and hikers.   
  
When snow arrives, access on the graveled county road is by four-wheel-drive only. 

## Recreation

Anglers seek brook and rainbow trout in Dry Wolf Creek. A variety of horseback riding and hiking trails originate within a few miles of the cabin. Trails for mountain bikers and off-road vehicle riders are also in the area. Cross country skiing is popular in winter months. 

## Facilities

The cabin is a one-room structure that sleeps five. Amenities include a propane cook stove, propane lights and a wood stove for heat. Firewood is provided and is located in the storage shed near the cabin. **DO NOT USE THE SUPPLIED FIREWOOD FOR OUTSIDE FIRES**. Dishes, pots, pans and utensils are available, and a vault toilet is located year-round outside.   
  
  
  
No water or electricity is included. Guests are expected to bring plenty of water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning purposes. other items to bring: cleaning supplies, bedding, towels, matches food, water, garbage bags, a cooler, flashlights, toilet paper and personal necessities. Guest must claen the cabin/toilet completely, pack out all food and trash upon dearture.  **Pets are not allowed in the cabin,** but can be kept outside.

## Natural Features

The cabin is nestled along Dry Wolf Creek at an elevation of 5,600 feet. Dry Wolf Creek is a tributary of the Judith River and flows north for about 40 miles in the Little Belt Mountains. Surrounding peaks include Gibson Peak and Butcherknife Mountain. 

## Nearby Attractions

Groceries and fuel may be found in Stanford, approximately 20 miles from the cabin. Bandbox Mountain, about an hour's drive, is a good place to hunt for marine fossils that are more than 100 million years old.

## Overview

Fourmile Cabin is open year-round and offers guests a rustic mountain retreat surrounded by majestic scenery. The cabin offers an electric cooking stove, lights, and a refrigerator. Guests will need to bring most of their own gear and supplies to ensure a comfortable stay.  
  
  
  
The cabin is accessible by vehicle during warmer months, along a gravel county road. Late-season ice may require guests to snowshoe, hike or snowmobile up to 3.5 miles to the cabin. Guests arriving in winter should be prepared to snowmobile, ski or snowshoe up to 11 miles along the access road to the cabin. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety.

## Recreation

Equestian and hiking trails are accessible from the cabin and head west into the Absaroka Mountains, branching out through the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. The winter landscape is ideal for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.  
  
Anglers can fish for Yellowstone cutthroat or rainbow trout in Fourmile Creek or the Boulder River. Hunting is a popular fall activity.

## Facilities

The two-room cabin has an electric stove, lights and refrigerator. A wood-burning stove is provided for heat. **Firewood is not available from June 1st through September 30th. Please bring firewood or gather from the forest during the summer season. Do no burn provided firewood for outdoor fires ever, as it is extremely difficult to replace.** Firewood is available during winter months as long as supplies last.  
  
The cabin can sleep up to four people on provided twin beds with mattresses. Other amenities include basic cookware and utensils, some cleaning supplies, a table with chairs, axe, maul, bucket and shovel.   
  
There is a campfire ring and a vault toilet outside.   
  
Water is not available at the cabin. Guests need to bring their own water supply or be prepared to treat water taken from an outside source. Garbage bags are needed to pack out trash, and guests are expected to clean the cabin before leaving.   
  
Guests should also bring their own flashlight, bedding, cookware, dishes, utensils, newspaper, matches, toilet paper and first aid kit, among other necessities. 

## Natural Features

The cabin sits at an elevation of 6,186 feet on the Boulder River, near Fourmile Creek. The Boulder River carves out a canyon between the peaks of The Needles, Carbonate Mountain and Hawley Mountain in the Absaroka Range. The cabin is nestled in the canyon in an open, grassy area surrounded by mixed forest.  
  
The location provides habitat for a variety of wildlife, including bear, moose, antelope, elk and deer. Many species of birds also inhabit the area. 

## Nearby Attractions

The Boulder River is just to the east of the cabin and Fourmile Creek is to the south. The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness is on either side of the road and begins right behind the cabin. Trails into the Wilderness begin adjacent to the cabin.

Fourmile Cabin

## Overview

Ibex Cabin was constructed in 1939 as a shelter for Forest Service rangers working within the Shields Ranger District of the Gallatin National Forest of south-central Montana. It is available for summer and winter recreational use, and provides a peaceful, remote mountain retreat.   
  
Guests can drive to the cabin from June until the snow flies. The cabin is closed April and May due to road and wildlife protection. High clearance, four-wheel drive vehicles are strongly recommended. The access road to the cabin may get muddy in the rain, so guests may want to call ahead for road conditions. In the winter, the cabin is only accessible by a 5.5-mile ski, snowshoe or snowmobile trip. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety.   
  
This cabin offers very rustic accommodations with limited amenities, so guests should be  
prepared to bring most of their own supplies and gear to make their stay an enjoyable experience.

## Recreation

There are a number of trails in the area for hikers, equestrians and snowmobilers. Tresspass Trail and Cottonwood Lake Trail are good trails in the area to explore. Trails in the area may cross private property,so guests MUST stay on the trail.   
  
Winter recreation includes snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Big game hunting is also a popular activity in this area.

The cabin has bunk beds with mattresses to accommodate up to four people. Other amenities include a wood stove for heat, a propane lantern ( bring propane cannisters), table, chairs, axe, splitting maul, bucket, broom, mop and shovel. An outhouse with vault toilet is located outside. FIREWOOD IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 1ST THROUGH SEPTEMBER 30TH. PLEASE BRING FIREWOOD OR GATHER FROM FOREST DURING SUMMER. DO NOT BURN PROVIDED FIREWOOD FOR OUTDOOR FIRES, EVER, AS IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO REPLACE. Firewood is available during winter months as long as supplies last. A campfire ring is located outside, (collect wood in forest nearby or bring firewood for outside fires). Electricity and water are not available. Guests must bring their own water supply, as well as cooking gear, propane canisters for the lantern, bedding, matches, newspaper, first aid kit, dishes and utensils, toilet paper and other necessities. The cabin will need to be cleaned and all trash carried out, prior to leaving.

## Natural Features

The rustic cabin is nestled at the edge of a meadow in the foothills of the Crazy Mountains, at an elevation of 6,600 feet. A forest of Lodgepole pine grows behind the cabin, and views from the front reveal the 7,354-foot peak of Ibex Mountain. The surrounding meadow bursts with color from wildflowers in the summer. Mule deer, porcupine and elk may be spotted around the cabin. Several bird species that inhabit this area include bald eagles, owls, jays, western meadowlarks and mountain bluebirds.

Grandview Campground

## Overview

McCart Lookout is a historic tower located on McCart Peak, east of Sula. It has been restored to reflect a lookout of the 1940s, including the stove, furniture, dishes and other small touches. It offers a unique chance for visitors to camp on a mountain peak, on the border of the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness, in a rustic, old-time setting. The tower provides spectacular views of the surrounding western Montana wilderness. 

## Recreation

The trail to reach the tower continues south and joins the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, which extends 3,100 miles across the United States, from the borders of Mexico to Canada. While it might take about six months to complete, a variety of day hikes and points of exploration are available within the area of the lookout tower. Trails can be enjoyed on foot or on horseback. Backpackers also enjoy the terrain. Aside from hiking and horseback riding, the area is replete with wildlife and offers scenic views. A lookout journal is kept inside, providing instructions of what to do in case of emergency or a storm. Danger from lightning is largely abated due to a lightning rod implanted at the structure.

## Facilities

McCart Lookout is a historic "L4" lookout located on Mccart Peak east of the Bitterroot Valley. The lookout is a one room cabin with a bed platform suitable for two people. Bedding is not provided. The lookout can accommodate up to four. Others are welcome to tent camp in the area. The lookout measures 14ft.X14ft. with a 30 inch catwalk around the outside. There is a wood stove for heat. You may have to saw your own wood from dead and down material found nearby. A bow saw and ax are provided. A two burner propane camp stove and lanterns are provided. Propane is not provided, you will need to **bring your own propane canisters**. Utensils for cooking and eating are provided. There is no water available near the lookout so please **bring your own water**. An outdoor toilet serves the lookout. You will need to **provide your own toilet paper**. There is a small corral for two or three head of stock.

  
The lookout is built on a 10 foot tall tower, with narrow steps and catwalk. This may pose a hazard for children and pets. Guests are responsible for their own safety.  


Remember, guests will need to bring their own water for drinking, cooking and cleaning purposes, as well as propane fuel canisters for cooking and lighting. **Guests are also responsible for their own bedding, towels, soap, toilet paper and garbage bags**. The facility does not provide trash receptacles; all garbage must be carried out, and the tower must be cleaned by guests prior to leaving. Do not leave anything you bring, even if you think it will benefit other renters   
  
The tower is accessed by a moderate, 1.5-mile hike from the parking area. Snowmobiles and other off-road vehicles are not allowed on the trail, however, horses and other livestock are welcome. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

## Natural Features

The tower is situated east of the Bitterroot Valley, at an elevation of 7,115 feet. It was named for William McCart, who settled the area but failed to complete his homestead entry to patent. It is poised on the edge of the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness and offers beautiful views of the Pintler Mountains to the east and the Bitterroot Mountains to the west.   
  
The Bitterroot forest is home to many species of wildlife, from mule deer, whitetail deer, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, black bear, mountain lions, and moose, to many varieties of smaller animals and birds. 

## Nearby Attractions

A variety of natural hot springs exist in the area, including the the Lost Trail Hot Springs, which is located about 13 miles northwest of the tower. It provides swimming and additional amenities, including a general store and lodging.

Mccart Lookout

## Overview

Spanish Creek Cabin was constructed in 1934 and retains much of its rustic character from that time. The cabin is available year-round and offers an excellent base camp for a variety of summer and winter recreation opportunities. It is adjacent to a popular trailhead and a campground. Guests may drive to the cabin during summer months. During the winter (December 2nd through May 15th) the access road is gated 3.5 miles from the cabin and guest should be prepared to hike, bike, ski or snowshoe to the cabin. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

## Recreation

A nearby trailhead provides access to a network of trails that head south into the Lee Metcalf Wilderness and west into non-wilderness areas.The trails can be used by hikers, equestrians, snowshoers and cross-country skiers. Trails also lead to Little Hell Roaring Creek, the north end of the Madison Range and the South Fork of Spanish Creek. This area also offers opportunities for fishing and hunting.

## Facilities

The two-story cabin has bunk beds and beds with mattresses to sleep up to four people. A wood cook stove is provided. In a kitchen area cleaning equipment is available. A campfire ring is located in front of the cabin. An outhouse is equipped with a vault toilet. Electricity and water are not provided. Guests need to bring their own drinking water, bedding, food, lanterns or flashlights, extra toilet paper, dish soap, garbage bags and first aid supplies, among other necessities. The cabin will need to be cleaned and all trash removed before leaving.

## Natural Features

The cabin sits at the base of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness, in a large meadow, at an elevation of 6,200 feet. Wildflowers add bursts of color around the cabin each summer. South Fork Spanish Creek flows nearby. The densely-forested peaks of the Madison Range surround the cabin. This area is home to grizzly bears, moose, elk, deer and bighorn sheep, as well as a variety of bird species.

**Downstream Campground** is located just below Fort Peck Dam on the Missouri River in northeastern Montana. Recreation enthusiasts and sportsmen enjoy the beauty of Fort Peck Lake's 1,500 miles of shoreline. A variety of high quality outdoor activities are available, including camping, boating, fishing, hunting, sightseeing and wildlife viewing. 

**Fort Peck Dam** , which impounds Fort Peck Lake is the first dam built in the upper Missouri River Basin. The area surrounding Fort Peck was first charted by Lewis and Clark in 1804, and the pristine natural condition of the river and surrounding area awed the renowned explorers. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the Fort Peck project in 1933, thousands of people from all over the country migrated to Montana during the midst of the Great Depression in hopes of earning a living. Today, Fort Peck Lake is a sportsman's paradise with excellent fishing, wildlife viewing and other countless outdoor recreation opportunities.

## Recreation

The vast size of Fort Peck Lake and its remoteness from major population centers provide a variety of high quality outdoor experiences. Popular recreation activities include camping, boating, fishing, hunting, sight-seeing, picnicking, biking, hiking, photography, watching wildlife and just relaxing. 

**Fort Peck Lake:** Fifteen hundred miles of pristine shoreline serve as a haven for those wishing to get away from the stresses of modern life. There are 27 recreation areas located around the reservoir. The areas near and around the dam offer paved roads, electricity, showers and playgrounds while facilities around the rest of the lake are more primitive with gravel roads, picnic tables and vault toilets. Access roads to many of the remote areas may be impassable in inclement weather. 

**Fishing:** Fort Peck Lake enjoys nationwide recognition as a hot spot for walleye fishing. Fort Peck Lake provides excellent boating and fishing opportunities. The lake also offers excellent fishing for sauger, smallmouth bass, lake trout, chinook salmon and northern pike. The introduction of cisco as a forage fish in 1983 proved successful and has increased both the size and number of game fish. 

**Wildlife Viewing/Hunting:** The Fort Peck Lake Area and the [Charles M. Russell Wildlife Refuge](https://www.fws.gov/refuge/charles_m_russell/) provide superb hunting of deer, elk, big horn sheep, and prong horn. The Missouri River Breaks are known for producing large elk and other game animals.  
 **Trails:** Three miles of paved nature trails wind along the Missouri River and through the surrounding wooded area. This trail area is a popular birding and wildlife viewing area.

**Disc Golf Course:** A disc golf course "The Fortress" was installed in summer of 2021. Discs are available to check out at the gate house. 

**Interpretive Center & Museum: **The Fort Peck Dam Interpretive Center and Museum offers displays of wildlife dioramas, aquariums, dinosaur fossils and dam construction history. Open Friday through Monday 9am to 4pm.

## Facilities

Downstream Campground offers 86 family campsites, 71 of which have electrical hookups; 16 sites are tent-only. One large group campsite is available with electrical hookups. Five day-use picnic shelters are available for reservations, all with electrical hookups as well as two overnight group use areas with shelters.  
  
The campground offers flush and vault toilets, showers, playgrounds, a basketball court and horseshoe pits. A dump station and fish cleaning station are located on-site. 

## Natural Features

A shady grove of cottonwoods covers the grassy campground, making Downstream a pleasant place during the heat of the summer. In autumn, the leaves turn a beautiful golden yellow. Three fishing ponds, including scenic Winter Harbor, dot the landscape below the dam.

Downstream (mt)

The Many Glacier Campground is located on the east side of Glacier National Park, at an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet. The campground is located about 22 miles from the town of St. Mary and the east entrance to Glacier National Park. The St. Mary Entrance allows access to the spectacular 50 mile-long Going-to-the-Sun Road, and traverses the high point at Logan Pass with an elevation of 6,646 feet. Babb, Montana, is the closest community to the Many Glacier Campground and is located approximately 12 miles east of the campground. Babb has a general store, gas station, several restaurants and an U.S. Post Office. Cell phone coverage is not available in the campground. However, limited coverage is available in Babb. Recreation Many Glacier Campground is located on the east side of the Continental Divide, and has excellent trails available for day hiking and overnight backpacking. Trailheads start at a higher elevation than those on the west side of the park, resulting in a shorter ascent to reach scenic vistas. Trails traverse areas frequented by grizzly and black bears, so take these safety precautions -- hike in groups, make lots of noise to avoid surprise encounters and carry bear pepper spray (know how to use it). Facilities Potable water at shared spigots is available throughout the campground. Restroom facilities provide flush toilets and sinks with cold running water. Camper utility sinks are available to dispose of gray water. Each campsite has a picnic table. The campground is located in a forested area so most campsites have some shade. Some sites are "generator free" for a more quiet camping experience. Other sites have limited hours for generator use. Within walking distance of the campground is the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, a concession facility with a restaurant, camp store, gift shop, limited groceries, and coin operated showers. Please read the individual site descriptions carefully to ensure your vehicle and camping equipment (including RVs) will be accommodated in the campsite. Most campsites and driveways are very small and will not accommodate towed units over 21 feet. A limited number of sites can accommodate towed units 26 to 30 feet. Many campsites will not accommodate camper "slide-outs". If you must use slide-outs, please make a reservation at St. Mary Campground, located 22 miles from Many Glacier and 1/2 mile along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Natural Features Many Glacier Campground is situated in a mature Douglas fir, lodgepole pine and quaking aspen forest. Vegetation is dense and provides partial shade for almost all campsites. Occasional strong wind gusts occur, however, with tree cover, most sites have some protection from the weather. Nearby natural features include Swiftcurrent Creek and Lake, and mountain views of Altyn, Henkel, Wilber, Grinnell Point, Allen and Wynn. Nearby Attractions If you have the time and a current passport, be sure to visit Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada. Waterton Lakes National Park is a sister park to Glacier and both are known collectively as "Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park" -- the first international peace park in the world and designated in 1932. Waterton Lakes National Park offers fantastic hiking, scenic boat cruises and several short drives to view wildlife and access numerous hiking trails. Waterton Lakes National Park is located approximately 45 miles north of the town of Babb, Montana. Take Montana highway # 89 north to the intersection of Highway#17 or the Chief Mountain International Peace Park Highway.
