Best Campgrounds in Montana

This location is much more of a campsite than typical free camps, with toilets and food storage. Pretty full for a summer weekday, but was still able to get a spot in the afternoon. There are abundant options further down this road with more privacy and better views, but this location is great if you don’t have high clearance or would like more basic comforts.

I’m in a camper van and had no issues accessing the site. Dirt road, but very passable leading here. Large 30+’ motorhomes here, too. Bathroom onsite, too. Have a site that backed right up to the river.

It was last minute I read about this spot on Dyrt and was pretty relieved to find something with great reviews and relatively close to home in Bozeman. We are literally the only people up here off this FS road. Strange to see so many dead elk carcasses all around but it’s Montana so not surprised. Epic views, peaceful atmosphere and lots of open space. I definitely will come back again to enjoy another night or two. Bring along wood and water. It is best country but I’m not in any fear whatsoever.

Buddy and I stayed here for three days and enjoyed every bit of it. Site is about 3 miles past the end of the pavement. I made it in my Kia Soul, so anyone should be good haha! Had some wildlife come and visit us at night and walked the river easily for about 2 miles. Only consistent cars to pass on the road at night time were logging trucks and honda crvs. Definitely check out! PIT TOILETS WOOO! Only 3 (maybe 4) designated sites unless you park in the lot and walk to a wooded part.

Got up to this spot after picking my buddy up from the airport and we stayed here for two days. Had a fire ring, but no other amenities. Could hear some of the louder vehicles traveling through the valley at night time, but otherwise super quiet. Awesome view of the Northern Lights too!

Perfect spot for me and my Kia Soul on a forest service road outside west glacier. Saw some trailers and vans on my way up. Sizable turnout spot at the end of the FSR. Quite busy, but spacious enough to feel private.

Absolutely beautiful place with good facilities. Unfortunately it seems this is a day use area only now. Not sure if this changes seasonally. We were here 22 April 2024.

Excellent little camp spot. Sites are close together, so no very private but the beach access for everyone is great. This campground is technically closed so there is no charge to stay here between the end of September and May 2nd. There is one pit toilet open but it’s not maintained so bring your own TP if you visit off season.

Well maintained campground with clean bathrooms. There may be an issue with parking with a boat trailer at the launch, space is limited. All in all, a very nice place

Pulled into a spot less than an 1/8 of a mile before the marker, positioned on a hill with a clear view of the mountain range. Looks like plenty of spots in this area and pretty easy drive in. Unfortunately staying for a few hours for some rest since there is a winter storm coming in. Trees aren’t tall enough for shade. Pretty good spot for April camping if it wasn’t for the incoming storm

Glen Campground is a great place to stop when passing through Montana on the 15. It’s not far from town or the freeway, but remote enough to enjoy a few nights of camping. It is bear country so be mindful of that when planning your visit.

We stayed one night on our way back to Spokane and it was cold but beautiful. Lit a fire and enjoyed the beautiful April 2025 Full Moon.

You must pack in/pack out all of your belongings & trash.

Minimal road noise but not too far off the road, unfrequented part of the road, able to turn around and back up a teardrop without problems. Creek is dried up, but has a few different sites with rock fire pits. People who must have stayed the night before us (4/9, Waters) left trash and a lot of cigarette butts (plus a little Caesar’s box with their name and date on it), but we got most of it cleaned back up and back to it beautiful nature

I have stayed at the off base park, "Gateway Famcamp", located just outside the main gate, every year for the past 6 years.  I was assigned to MAFB and lived in Great Falls for over 20 years.  I return every year to visit family.  The concrete pads are mostly level...nothing is absolutely level.  Water, sewer and electric are provided.  There is a great walking trail just on the edge of the camp.  A laundry and men and women's shower house is at the entrance.

The MAFB "Annex Campground" is located in a corner on base.  This is the original campground and has not been updated in over 30 years.  The gravel spaces are close together, mostly back in, and small.  Showers are available at the base gym across the road and laundry is at the off base campground.

The base doesn't have an active runway so planes are not taking off at all hours but you will hear lots of helicopters.

Great Falls is the windiest city in America so be prepared for that.  There is a lot of water nearby to enjoy on the Missouri river.

You have to “walk down” a steep drop to access the river. When it’s high don’t try or say goodbye. Train runs often across the river and will disrupt your night unless you live in Montana then you’re already used to it. The toilets are stocked but not cleaned regularly. There was a you g lonely moose crossing the river and sleeping in the camp at night during my stay. If you’re not from Montana expect those that are to be unfriendly, that’s a thing here. Fire pits are a joke and burn band are common
