The 18 canyons serve as great places to spot waterfalls after a rain and families love ending the day with s’mores around the bonfire at the nearby Starved Rock State Park campsites. 


Those looking to learn about the state’s heritage while camping in Illinois may head farther south to Lincoln Trail Homestead State Park & Memorial. This 162-acre park is 12 miles southwest of Decatur near Harristown, IL, and features the land where Abraham Lincoln first resided in the state. If you visit be sure to check out the memorials commemorating this important president.


People who want to mountain bike in this Midwestern state will enjoy heading to Palos Park, a forest preserve known for its excellent biking, hiking and equestrian trails that cover over 50 miles of terrain. Frakers Grove farm has been in my family since the 1980’s but the history of Frakers Grove dates back to 1828 when Michael Fraker arrived to this area and negotiated a peaceful settlement with the Indians and became the first settler in the North Eastern Knox County. His grave is located on the property, and it is estimated that there are 26 other graves of relatives and friends in the area.

Camping on a 250 acre farm located in Western Illinois. There is a 1.5 Acre stocked lake and a small creek running through the property. There are some trails running through the property. Wildlife found on the property include: Deer, American River Otters, Beavers, Geese, Wood Ducks, Racoons, etc.

1 Walk-in Camp Sites & 1 Drive-In Site by the pond available, each with a fire ring and picnic table. We are testing out RV Camping as well, feed back is appreciated! Overall this is primitive wooded camping behind and around pond, the RV site is next to the polebarn. Guest WiFi is available near the buildings.

We can aid in getting your tent and supplies to and from the campsite on check-in and check-out days with a side by side if requested.

Effective 5/31/2023 we now have a Porta Potty available for our guests to use located up by the Pole Barn.

NOTE: This is an active farm; during the spring and fall there is more activity with heavy machinery. We also have Chickens and Pigs. In 2023 we are building a pasture to start our herd of cows, cow's should arrive in 2024.

Kishauwau Cabins offers getaway cabins for short term rentals all year round. Our beautifully constructed cabins offer a blend of country charm equipped with modern conveniences. It's strictly cabin rentals here, no tent set ups or RV's.

Cell reception on our property is spotty & there is no way to know until you get here. We offer free guest wifi in our office to use for something quick (ie. check e-mail or look for things to do in the area but we do not allow people to sit in our office all day on the internet). We also do not allow kids to sit in here on it. We understand that some people need it for work or school and that's fine.

Our property is host to 17 cabins in varying sizes. Spacious and well equipped, these Illinois cabins are spread throughout 65 acres of beautiful wooded landscape on a bluff above the Vermilion River. Catering to large family reunions or a quiet, romantic getaway for 2, we are one of Illinois’ premier cabin rental destinations. Whether you’re putting together a family reunion, needing a family vacation cabin or just a romantic weekend getaway for two, Kishauwau Cabins has what you are looking for.

Each cabin rental comes equipped with basic pots, pans, cooking utensils, and dishes in the kitchen, a covered porch (most with porch swings), a personal outdoor fire pit, an indoor wood stove or gas fireplace (for wintertime use only; contact us for details), and much more.

What would a vacation be without everyone’s favorite family member? We welcome your dog with our four dog-friendly cabins on property.

We simply ask you read our pet policies listed under each dog friendly cabin in the “Cabins” tab or contact us prior to your trip.

Each dog will add an additional $20 plus tax per night to your reservation. Simply list 1 or 2 dogs in the pet field when booking on-line and the system will add the fee for you. I do ask that you notify me in e-mail that you have read and are fine with the policies as we are firm with those.

Camping along the Hennepin Canal towpath is PROHIBITED – camping is only allowed in the designated campsites. Fires are only allowed in the state designated fire pits at the campgrounds. Camping is not permitted in the main complex area (the area around the visitor center).

Currently, the ONLY DRINKING WATER available on the ENTIRE canal is located at the main parking lot in front of the visitor center at the large shelter. There is also a faucet on the side of the visitor center, just to the left of the main entrance. There are no operable drinking water fountains along the rest of the canal so bring your own water for your hike or camping trip.

Equestrian camping is restricted to the south side of the Lock 21 area. Equestrian campers are asked to bring a shovel to clear their own horse droppings, which may be pushed off to the side of the trail. There is no tethering to trees.

If you are not familiar with the canal it may be confusing trying to find the campsites. Stop by the Hennepin Canal Visitor Center to pick up a detailed map of the canal, which shows all of the country crossroads. You can also call the visitor center and ask to be mailed a copy: 815-454-2328. I
