Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Erie, CO

St. Vrain State Park Campground accommodates pets throughout its sites with strict leash requirements. Visitors find multiple pet-friendly options including Boulder County Fairgrounds and Golden Gate Canyon State Park, both offering designated areas where dogs can exercise while remaining on leash. The fairgrounds particularly appeals to RV campers with pets due to its central location and clean facilities. Many campers appreciate the safety provided by regular police patrols through the Boulder County site. Pet owners should note that while most campgrounds allow pets, they must be supervised at all times and waste must be properly disposed of.

Gordon Gulch Dispersed Area and Dream Canyon provide more primitive camping options for those traveling with pets who prefer less structured environments. These areas lack traditional amenities like running water or waste stations, so pet owners need to pack sufficient water and waste bags. The trails surrounding these dispersed camping areas welcome leashed pets, though wildlife encounters are possible and owners should maintain control of their animals. Veterinary services are available in nearby Longmont and Boulder for emergency situations. Several reviewers noted that the Boulder County Fairgrounds facility, while primarily designed for RVs, provides an excellent central location for accessing numerous dog-friendly hiking trails throughout the region while offering a secure base camp.

    Spruce Lake RV Park

    Great location for RMNL

The selling point of this campground is location. It’s as close to Rocky Mountain National Park as you can get without actually camping on NPS property. You are completely surrounded by the mountains and the views are amazing. There’s a beautiful river flowing nearby. Easy access to Estes Park. I biked into downtown and back easily. Close to a great little market and several restaurants. Sites are very tight with no privacy unless you are along the edges of the park. Nice laundry facilities, mini golf, and a small pond. There’s a small dog park but I’d recommend taking your dog to the city’s dog park about 10 minutes away. It’s worth the drive and your dog can go swimming on a beach.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

Popular and large campground near the lake

As it is very close to the city, the temperature stays consistent with Denver temps. So in the summer, it will not be as cool as some mountain spots. That being said, it is very easy to get to and you’ll have the lake right there to cool off!

Entrance into the state park is about $7/day. There is a dog park within the state park that allows off leash and has some ponds the dogs can swim in. Entrance to the dog park is $2.

    Riverview RV Park & Campground

    Riverside Camping

We had a great time at this campground. We spent 4 days in a spot right next to the river. Close to Rocky Mountain National Park. Really enjoyed the river, dog park, live music on sat. night and laundry.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

A piece of nature tucked into the city.

Located in the city, but once you’re in the park you don’t feel like you’re in the city at all!!! The RV spots have full hookups and are nice and spacious, as are the neighbors. We were able to set up a tent too! Great place to stroll and relax. Beautiful sunsets. Clean bathrooms and laundry facilities with a little vending machine.

A great place for camping (RV and tent spots), fishing, wildlife/nature viewing, hiking, boating (all water activities), has a swim beach, marina, off leash dog park, shooting range, horse stables that you can do a beautiful hour horseback ride.

FEES: Campsites $41 full hookup, basic campsite $28, daily park pass is $11, annual park pass $83, daily dog park pass $3, annual dog park pass $25, and group camping is available too.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

    City Camping at it's Best

Great campground here at this state park. We have always stayed in the Arapahoe Group Loop for holiday weekends. Arapahoe Group Loop has a great pavillion with outdoor kitchen and bathroom. Overall Camper amenities are great and very clean. Many well shaded individual sites are available. Campsites are far from other park amenities like Dog Park, Shooting Range, Marina. Swim beach is a 10 minute walk-able distance from campground. Recommend driving to get around the park.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

Super busy but great for dogs

This is a location that you only camp if you literally don't have any worries about being around people. It is ALWAYS packed due to the tons of hiking trails, huge dog park, and water access.

I taught kayaking to little ones here and it was always a fight to get into the park, get to the water, and not get run over by boats and unexperienced (or entitled) people.

The campground is well maintained but it sit really worth being able to be basically in a metropolitan city? For me I'll go somewhere more nature friendly and less crowded.

BUT it is excellent for dogs. We love taking out dogs here because they can play in water, run their hearts out, and hang out with other dogs. It is pricey to get into the park though. $80 for a year pass to the state parks and another $25 for the dog park fees.

Guide to Erie

St. Vrain State Park stands at approximately 5,000 feet elevation on Colorado's Front Range, offering camping opportunities within 15 miles of Erie. The park contains multiple fishing ponds and provides mountain views, particularly of Longs Peak to the west. Weather conditions vary considerably by season, with summer highs often reaching the 90s and winter nights frequently dropping below freezing.

What to do

Paddle sports on Standley Lake: Visitors can rent kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards at Standley Lake Regional Park. "I paddle with my friend and large smiles in the calm waters, heading toward Bird Island- you can hear the ruckus of Cormorants, Grebes, Heron, and others birds all marking their space," reports Nancy B.

Fishing at multiple locations: Several campgrounds offer stocked fishing ponds. "There are several water bodies one even had a nest of eagles. Close enough to Walmart for groceries, etc," mentions Michele W. about St. Vrain State Park Campground.

Hiking near Nederland: The mountains west of Boulder provide numerous trail options. Gordon Gulch Dispersed Area offers access to forested trails. "This dispersed site is pretty and is close to the highway, the road seemed a little sketchy in the snow but my RAV4 AWD made it just fine to most of the sites," notes Catalina H.

Winter activities: Some parks remain open year-round. "They allow ice fishing as long as the ice is safe," Frank O. mentions about Boyd Lake State Park.

What campers like

Mountain views: The Front Range offers scenic vistas from many campgrounds. At Cottonwood Campground, "Clean, relatively quiet. During week not crowded. Look for a spot with a tree to park in shade. Nice path along lake," according to Michael.

Wildlife watching: Many campgrounds support diverse bird populations. "There is a huge lake that bald eagles nest beside. With a rookery, this is the spot for bird enthusiasts!" says Blair S. about Standley Lake Regional Park.

Stream access: Some campgrounds feature running water. At LaVern M. Johnson Park, "There is a river that runs right behind it and it's so pleasant to listen to and fun for the kids to play near. It was fast flowing though so we didn't let them in," shares Lindsay R.

Quiet weekday camping: Many campgrounds near Erie get busy on weekends but remain quiet mid-week. "During week not crowded," notes Michael about Boyd Lake.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Many state parks require advance booking. "January of 2019 the park, like many in the state moved to a reservation only system. I was unaware of this when pulling up to the park," reports Crystal C. about Boyd Lake State Park.

Road conditions: Access to dispersed camping often requires careful driving. At Dream Canyon, "The ditch getting into the parking lot is bruuutal so 4WD is necessary," warns Mattie C.

Seasonal limitations: Some facilities close during winter. "Closed in winter but a cool place to camp with water and electric hook ups in the summer time," notes Brian R. about Boulder County Fairgrounds.

Traffic noise: Campgrounds near highways may experience road noise. "The interstate is so close as I type this I can hear in my travel trailer every truck, motorcycle, and car," mentions Paul Z. about St. Vrain State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas. Deer Creek Campground "has a nice little store and playground," according to Pam B.

Water features for kids: Some campgrounds offer water recreation. LaVern M. Johnson Park has "picnic tables. The sites are cleared and make it really easy for putting up a tent, and there are tables at each site," reports Lindsay R.

Dog-friendly trails: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Erie provide access to pet-friendly hiking paths. "The trails surrounding these dispersed camping areas welcome leashed pets, though wildlife encounters are possible," notes Ronda C.

Family-friendly timing: Consider camping on weekdays for quieter experiences. "Very quiet, not so private. Kind of tricky to get to big overall nice. Good, clean bathrooms Ruth showers," mentions Chloe M. about Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

Tips from RVers

Level sites: Look for campgrounds with concrete pads. "The pads are level concrete with either electric or full hook ups," notes Paul Z.

Fairgrounds convenience: For RVers seeking central locations with amenities, "We needed a place to sleep while a parent was in the hospital. We were in the middle of a roadtrip so we had a big camper plus a trailer. We didn't need amenities so it was only $15/ night," shares Cindy L. about Boulder County Fairgrounds.

RV site selection: Choose locations away from highways when possible. "Check the map of the campground and choose a spot far from the Interstate highway, it's closer than you think!" advises Ronda C.

Hookup availability: Many campgrounds offer varying levels of connections. "Easily accessible, cozy smallish campsites. The bathroom facilities are spectacular. Super clean, flushable toilets," says Nathan P. about Boyd Lake State Park.
