Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Black Hawk, CO

Denver West-Central City KOA accommodates pets across all camping options including tent sites, RV spaces with full hookups, and cabin rentals at 8,890 feet elevation. Dogs receive a dedicated exercise area with artificial turf where they can play off-leash after the drive up the mountain. The campground enforces standard pet policies including leash requirements in common areas and proper waste disposal. Campers frequently note the staff's pet-friendly attitude and clean facilities that make traveling with dogs comfortable. Full hookup sites feature concrete pads, fire rings, and outdoor seating areas where pets can relax with their owners.

Hiking trails accessible from Gordon Gulch Dispersed Area and West Magnolia Campground provide excellent exercise options for dogs needing activity after settling in. Both locations permit pets in dispersed camping environments with fewer restrictions than established campgrounds. Wildlife encounters remain a consideration when camping with pets in the mountain terrain surrounding Black Hawk. Temperatures at higher elevations can drop significantly at night, even reaching freezing in spring and fall, requiring appropriate gear for pets staying outdoors. Central City's proximity offers emergency veterinary options within reasonable driving distance. The campground store stocks essential pet supplies for campers who forget items, though prices reflect the remote mountain location.

Columbine Campground - Outside of Denver

    Last Minute Getaway to Columbine

Great campground ! Easy to access from Black Hawk/Central City. Tons of forests to explore nearby. It was very busy- sign said campground full but after a drive around all the sites we found one that was open! A little noisy with many off-road dunebuggys driving around. It was a great time though, would definitely visit again because of the easy access from Denver.

Cold Springs - Arapaho Roosevelt Nf (CO)

Base Camp for Blackhawk, Central City, and Golden Gate Canyon State Park

This campground is a great central location to Golden Gate Canyon State Park and Black Hawk/Central City area. The sites are super secluded and you really feel like you are in the forest.  The only downside is the highway noise.  Try to pick a site as far away from the highway as possible.

    Spruce Lake RV Park

    Great location for RMNL

The selling point of this campground is location. It’s as close to Rocky Mountain National Park as you can get without actually camping on NPS property. You are completely surrounded by the mountains and the views are amazing. There’s a beautiful river flowing nearby. Easy access to Estes Park. I biked into downtown and back easily. Close to a great little market and several restaurants. Sites are very tight with no privacy unless you are along the edges of the park. Nice laundry facilities, mini golf, and a small pond. There’s a small dog park but I’d recommend taking your dog to the city’s dog park about 10 minutes away. It’s worth the drive and your dog can go swimming on a beach.

    Nice campground near Nederland

We have camped here twice. Both before the pine beetle-killed trees were felled by Forest Service. However, it is great if you want to be up in the mountains with proximity to Nederland and Black Hawk as well as phenomenal hiking in the National Forests and easy day trips to Boulder, Estes Park, Georgetown, etc.

Columbine Campground - Outside of Denver

Bumpy roads but well worth the drive

Gorgeous views up here! The drive up is super bumpy but we made it here in a class A just fine. Close to Central City/Black Hawk if you need a quick trip to the grocery store. Quiet most of the time, though there are quite a few ATVs flying past and a shooting range nearby. Campsites are relatively close together but the trees offer decent privacy. The sites are mostly level, which is to be expected when you’re parked on dirt. Love it here and will likely be back!

    Chatfield State Park Campground

Popular and large campground near the lake

As it is very close to the city, the temperature stays consistent with Denver temps. So in the summer, it will not be as cool as some mountain spots. That being said, it is very easy to get to and you’ll have the lake right there to cool off!

Entrance into the state park is about $7/day. There is a dog park within the state park that allows off leash and has some ponds the dogs can swim in. Entrance to the dog park is $2.

Columbine Campground - Outside of Denver

Ghosts, Graveyards and Gold Mines oh my!

This campground is kind of a hidden gem. The proximity to Central City/ Black Hawk is crazy ( less than 2-3 miles) but the proximity to i70 is what makes it a hidden gem. Not many people travel up highway 119 because they think the only thing back here is the casinos- they are wrong.

This area is full of history, hiking and a healthy dose of camping! Columbine campground is the perfect spot for someone exploring this area.

Be aware this campground is very popular with the 4WD crowd but they were all very friendly.

There are some amazing old, and historical graveyards on your way into the campground along the dirt roads. Definitely worth exploring. The grave sites vary from the civil war to the early 1900s gold miners!

Moraine Park Campground — Rocky Mountain National Park

    Great stay

Took the kids camping in Colorado for the first time and we had a blast. It rained on us a lot but it didn't stop us. Took a great hike up deer mountain....stunning views. Can't wait to go back.

Guide to Black Hawk

Camping options near Black Hawk range from developed sites at 8,890 feet elevation to dispersed areas in the nearby national forest. The region contains pine forests interspersed with aspen groves, creating diverse camping environments across steep mountain terrain. Winter temperatures can drop below freezing even in late spring, with summer daytime averages reaching 70-85°F and nighttime lows dipping to 40-50°F.

What to do

Mountain biking on established trails: Golden Gate Canyon State Park offers extensive trail networks suitable for various skill levels. "The park is enormous. The options for trails are endless. Great for mountain biking or hiking enthusiasts," notes one visitor to Reverend's Ridge Campground.

Fishing at high elevation lakes: Chinns Lake provides fishing opportunities at higher elevations, requiring moderate vehicle capability to access. A camper reports, "We got to hike, fish, paddle board, and just enjoy time away from the city. Its a great place and not a very far drive from Denver," making Chinns Lake Dispersed Camping a good option for anglers.

Hiking to viewpoints: Panorama Point in Golden Gate Canyon offers views of the Continental Divide. "Golden Gate Canyon SP is absolutely gorgeous! We loved the experience at the park, the trails are great and the views are wonderful," according to a visitor, highlighting the natural attractions beyond established campsites.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Some campgrounds provide better separation between camping areas. At Kelly Dahl, "Campground is very clean. Loop E (electric hookups) is very spacious and well laid out. Every campsite is a pull thru allowing you situate anywhere along the paved area to best suit your needs."

Night sky viewing: The higher elevation and distance from city lights creates excellent stargazing conditions. At Columbine Campground, campers appreciate the clear night skies: "Beautiful, one of the best camping spots in the area!" according to one review.

Proximity to gambling towns: Some visitors appreciate being close to Black Hawk and Central City. "You are super confidently located near black hawk and Central City while also being near i70. Don't gamble with your camping experience this is a great campground!" notes a camper about Denver West-Central City KOA.

What you should know

Road conditions to dispersed sites: Many dispersed camping areas require vehicles with higher clearance. At West Magnolia Campground, "Road is not too rough, would recommend 4wd if raining or snowing. There are some deep holes when coming in if raining. We did air down due to the rain and snow while we were there."

Seasonal availability: Most established campgrounds in the area operate only from May through September, with higher sites often inaccessible until June due to snow. Several dispersed camping areas may have lingering snow: "Still impossible to get to by off-roading. Snow drifts towards the top still too deep for vehicles. You can hike to the lakes still."

Fire restrictions: Fire bans are common during dry periods and strictly enforced. At some campgrounds, "Ole Johnny Green Jeans and Johnny law love to patrol the area multiple times a day, so do not violate the fire bans. The ticket is a million dollars($510)."
