Best Campgrounds near Mount Horeb, WI

First off, I hate seeing reviews of parks and not stating which site someone stayed at. Because as tent campers, it's hard to see how the site is and if it will fit a tent. 

I had found a video of a gentleman doing a walkthrough of the campsite on youtube and i'm glad I found it! We had originally booked site 95 and on the video, he said it was quite the slope and it didn't look big enough for our campsite. I then switched our site to number 62. Wow, it is in a perfect spot! Walkways to the bathrooms and showers (yes they are pretty close) and the driveway was long enough for our car and our 12x12 canopy. It even had a grass area for our tent. Our tent is quite large, and it actually fit. The tent was slightly on the gravel but that's better than having no grassy area. 

The bathrooms were nice for what I saw of them. I just wish the bathrooms were warmer as they were not much warmer than outside.

You could also hear the highway from our campsite but honestly, to us, that wasn't a deal breaker. Being the first time out in the wilderness, it was white noise for me so I could fall asleep. 

I wish it was nicer out when we went because it was such a peaceful and beautiful campground. We ended up cutting our trip short because we weren't prepared for the weather and rain (we had a 4 month old and it was our first ever camping trip). We will be back again for sure!

Site 269, genuinely a perfect distance from the road with a reserved parking spot big enough for potentially 2 cars, nice trees for hammock hanging, decently level ground. We stayed for a week and the bathrooms showers and sites were some of the most clean I’ve been too, not to mention the landscape and variety of trails (especially Stephens’ Falls) is very beautiful and well cared for. All employees/volunteers we encountered were always so helpful and nice - yes bundles of wood are $7 (for a larger bundle, $5 for smaller) all funds go back into the park and seeing how well they try to care for it, we gladly pay the cost. PSA (obvi) keep your food and garbage locked up and away from your site. The raccoons here and insanely bold, we had one frequently visit our site and get VERY close to us and in the evening ended up ripping thru the roof of our tent (luckily in the separated front section and not in our sleeping area) and had to rip his way out of the tent because we had the zippers secured. Very frustrating night and hated every second of dealing with that coon. For any new campers, DONOT FEED THE RACCOONS

I called to reserve two sites months ago for Memorial Day weekend, asking specifically for adjoining sites since it didn't appear there was any way to do this online and we're camping with friends. The person answering the phone and taking my payment for the sites booked sites 77& 78 in my name. Today I called to confirm the reservation and find out the site numbers and it turns out we are clear across the park from each other at sites 16 and 78 and there are no other adjoining sites available. I guess we'll make the best of it since we already paid and really have no other options, however I'm incredibly disappointed that they couldn't follow through on a simple request when an accepting our payment. The customer service here sucks. I won't be back. I'm assuming our friends and their family won't either, and I’ll be sure to share my experience far and wide. Why on earth would I call to reserve two sites on the opposite ends of the park 10 months in advance? What if these were minor children staying in one of the sites? Ridiculous!

Devil's Lake is one of my all time favorite state parks, and holds many fond memories for me. I have led youth camping trips here, gone on group trips with friends, and my now husband proposed to me here. I love love love Devil's Lake!

As far as tent camping, I don't love the campsites. There is very little privacy between sites, it is always packed, and there is lots of noise. The first night I stayed here, the group across from us kept us up until 2 am!

However, Devil's Lake is truly a fantastic place - we stayed for several days and had a blast in spite of the poor sleep.

We had a great time in this hidden gem.  It is run by the county and was much more than we expected from a county run facility.  We had a very nice cam site that allowed us to pull through with our pop up.  There are very tall trees around the entire campground giving you some respite from the sun and the heat.  The bath house is easily within walking distance from anywhere in the campground.  Many people that we met have been coming back for years (this was our first time there).  They have fire rings and picnic tables and firewood for sale at the entrance.  They allow dogs and the ranger is frequently visible throughout the day.  You are a short distance from the river and the surroundings are wonderful.  You are 20 minutes away from stores and restaurants if you happen to need them and also a short drive to Wisconsin.
