Crystal Lake Campground offers rustic tent sites 22 miles north of Mount Horeb in the Lodi Valley. The campground sits at approximately 900 feet elevation and experiences typical Wisconsin seasonal variations with summer highs around 80°F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Winter camping isn't available as the campground operates from mid-April through mid-October.
What to do
Kayaking on Mirror Lake: Paddle through calm waters at Mirror Lake State Park where steep sandstone cliffs create unique scenery. "The lake is great for kayaking. Lots of sandstone cliffs. We only did 2 hiking trails but they were well maintained," notes Julia B.
Tubing on Sugar River: Float down the river at Sweet Minnihaha Campground where tubing is a popular summer activity. "Easy access to on and off the river for tubing. I'd say it's more of an adult atmosphere," according to Steve S., who mentions weekend live music events.
Hiking diverse trails: Explore wooded areas and open prairies around Lake Kegonsa. "There are multiple trails scattered throughout the park. Everything from a quick half mile trek to loops that allow you to put on a couple of miles," explains Lisa S.
What campers like
Spacious group sites: Governor Dodge State Park features excellent group camping areas. "Stayed here last year with a group of friends! Had 2 different group sites and both were awesome! A lot of space and not close to other group sites," shares Amanda J.
Family-friendly activities: Smokey Hollow Campground provides numerous amenities for kids. "A great place for multiple families to camp! Went camping here as a kid all the time and they always have more than just your average campground," writes Allison K.
Water recreation options: Sites near lakes offer cooling relief during hot summer days. "Love this campground! Great facilities and a dumping station. No hookups but the area cannot be beat. This is our favorite boondock spot. The lake is perfect for paddling," reports Abby W.
What you should know
Train noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience nighttime train disturbances. "The first train only blew its horn a few short times. The second train acted like someone was laying on the tracks and was a little excessive for 3 am," warns Lisa S.
Seasonal popularity: Summer weekends require advance planning. "Peak season reservations are a definite (weeks to months in advance for weekends)," advises Jen L.
Wildlife awareness: Several campgrounds report active wildlife. "Beware of raccoons at this campground they are BOLD!" cautions Jen L. about Governor Dodge State Park, while another camper notes, "The raccoons were brutal. They broke into our crates twice. Smart enough to figure out the clip mechanism."
Tips for camping with families
Dog-friendly options: Crazy Horse Campground welcomes pets with amenities. "Camped here past prime season so some activities shut down for season. Lots for kids to do during summer season with basketball court, large jumping pillow, mini putt," explains Kathie M.
Water play structures: Many campgrounds feature water recreation beyond swimming. "The man-made lake with a beach for swimming and bigger kids to enjoy the large inflatable slides and swim platforms," notes Kim L.
Glamping in Mount Horeb area: For those seeking upscale outdoor accommodations, Merry Mac's Campground offers yurts and park model rentals. "My family and I love the yurts and the giant pool/pond. The park model rentals are nice now that my grandma is getting older," shares Cherie J.
Tips from RVers
Site selection guidance: Choose sites based on rig size and shade preferences. "Campsites are nice and neat with bathrooms close by!" notes David Q. about Lake Kegonsa State Park.
Hookup availability: Some campgrounds offer partial hookups while others provide full-service sites. "We stayed at full hookups site 803. Being right in front of the jumping pillow people didn't walk around. They would cut thru our site," reports Juliana R.
Low clearance warnings: Watch for hazards when navigating certain parks. "There is also a low hanging overpass and it took the roofs off TWO fifth wheels while we were staying there. Major damage on roof and internally - the RV had to be totaled and replaced," cautions Kathy L.
Access challenges: Some sites present difficulty for larger rigs. "Great campground for everything but big 5th wheelers and motorhomes," shares Paul C., noting that while Governor Dodge has good lakes for recreation, not all sites accommodate large rigs comfortably.
