Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Waco Lake

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Speegleville Park campsites feature covered picnic tables and large, level sites that accommodate pets and RVs near Waco Lake. All pet-friendly campgrounds in the area provide fire rings and grills, with most sites offering water and electric hookups. Pets must remain leashed throughout the camping areas, with no off-leash zones identified at the lakeside facilities. Airport Park offers sheltered cabin camping with pets permitted, placing campers a stone's throw from the water. Bathrooms and facilities vary in cleanliness and maintenance across the campgrounds, with Speegleville Park noted for clean facilities. Most campsites have minimal shade, making summer visits potentially uncomfortable for pets without adequate cooling options.

The network of trails around Speegleville Park provides moderate pet exercise opportunities, though dense underbrush limits lake visibility from many camping locations. Reynolds Creek includes a one-mile shaded, flat trail suitable for dog walking and bird watching, plus a 20-mile equestrian/hiking trail around Lacey Point for more ambitious outings. Abundant wildlife including deer, armadillos, raccoons, and waterbirds frequent the camping areas, requiring vigilant pet supervision. Lake Waco itself offers excellent fishing opportunities but limited swimming access for dogs, with Twin Bridges Park (about 5 miles away) providing better swimming options. No designated dog beaches exist, and campers should pack sufficient pet supplies as the nearest stores are generally 4-8 miles away, with Dollar General being the closest option to most campgrounds.

    Speegleville Park

    Very clean facility

Right on Waco lake, the picnic tables were set on concrete pads with solid shelter covers. Many trails to ride and walk on. There is a marina with food facilities nearby, however was closed for the season.

    Blue Sky I-35 RV Park

    Safe overnight

We are headed south. I look for spots close to interstate. The park is clean, well kept and no appearance of lost long timers. The attendant put us in spot 59 across the street from the dog park. But more importantly a big open field with a walking path around it. Made our fur babies happy. I get in a hurry when we are moving again so we did not try the breakfast. I'm sure it was great. Definitely, a place to stop along Texas I-35 south of Dallas.

    Belton RV Park

    Just off the highway...

It’s a place to rest your head and wash your clothes. The pool and dog park are excellent additions and I really enjoyed that!

    Magnolia RV Resort

    Well kept RV Park

Well kept RV Park with friendly staff. This park sports an "old side" and "new side". It offers covered sites (extra cost), propane fill station, dumpsters, bath/toilet houses, laundry room, dog park, pool with sun or shaded seating, small storefront, WiFi & cable, free waffle breakfasts on the weekends and a fishing pond. Located just off the highway makes for an easy commute for work or adventures. Some of the sites are quite cramped. It took 20 minutes to get into our spot due to many trees and other campers/ vehicles. Spent one week here and probably would not stay here again due the very loud traffic noises.

We had a great time exploring the nearby hiking trails and taking part in the various activities the park offered. Whitney Rose RV Park provided us with a relaxing getaway, and we look forward to visiting again soon.

    Riverview Campground

    Riverview Campground

Located only 7 miles from Downtown Waco and Magnolia Silos District, Riverview Campground provides all the amenities necessary to camp in any type of RV or travel trailer. There are lots of trees or shade to stay cool in the warmer months and a pool available as well.

There’s a pet area, but it didn’t provide doggie bags, so make sure you bring your own. We felt safe and enjoyed the accessibility to the nearby river. The bathrooms are private but aren’t as clean as we would have liked. Overall we enjoyed our stay because of the close proximity to Magnolia and the surrounding areas.

    Falls on the Brazos Park

    River Water

Be sure to test the water before entering. It's seems harmess and may very well be harmless but it will make you and your pets stinky. Easy access to low current knee high water below the damage and easy and fun to walk/ wade around in but again, will lightly stain your clothes and have you smelling like sulfur beans. Has great potential and is usually quiet. View of river is ideal at dusk. Needs a bit of work.

Guide to Waco Lake

Lake Waco offers diverse camping experiences across numerous Corps of Engineers parks located within 20 minutes of downtown Waco. The 8,400-acre reservoir features multiple camping areas with varying amenities and access points around its 60 miles of shoreline. Water levels can fluctuate seasonally, affecting campsite availability and lake access, particularly during spring when rainfall is highest.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Reynolds Creek provides excellent fishing access with a dedicated dock. "The 1 mile shaded, flat trail suitable for dog walking and bird watching, plus a 20-mile equestrian/hiking trail around Lacey point for more ambitious outings," notes a visitor to Reynolds Creek.

Wildlife viewing: The campgrounds around Waco Lake host abundant wildlife. "We enjoyed the nature at this park. Sunsets on Lake Waco are mesmerizing. The deer wander right out to the road at dusk," reports a camper at Airport Park. Many campsites offer opportunities to observe local species in their natural habitat.

Water recreation: Lake access varies by campground, with some offering better swimming than others. "The sites were pretty far away from the water, but were close to the restrooms and playground area. Good spot for fishing, but not really for swimming," mentions one camper at Midway.

What campers like

Spacious, level sites: Campgrounds around Waco Lake typically offer well-maintained camping spaces. "Sites are level, wide, and even shaded. We arrived around 9pm and departed 10 hours later - so level we didn't even have to unhook," notes a visitor to North Crest RV Park.

Quiet atmosphere: Many campers appreciate the peaceful setting at lakeside campgrounds. "The whole park is very secluded and away from street noise which is so lovely. Perfect place for viewing the stars over the water and listening to nature speak around you," shares a visitor about Reynolds Creek.

Proximity to town: Campers value the convenience of being close to urban amenities while enjoying lakeside camping. "The best part was its proximity to the city of Waco. We were able to go into town to pick up provisions, do a little sightseeing, and then escape to the remoteness of the lake," states a review for Midway.

What you should know

Bathroom facilities vary widely: Campground bathroom conditions can differ significantly. "The bathhouse is exceptionally clean. The camper pads are level," reports a visitor at North Crest RV Park, while others note less maintained facilities at other parks.

Seasonal considerations: Summer heat can be intense with limited shade at some sites. "Not many trees so shade is hard to find. Was a great place to stay and is close to Waco," mentions a camper at Airport Park.

Road conditions: Some access roads require careful navigation. "GPS coordinates were spot on," notes a camper at Tradinghouse Lake Park, while others mention challenging roads with potholes.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Some campgrounds offer better facilities for children. "There is a play ground, but its only near a few sites and quite a distance from most sites. But for older kids with bikes, it's a fun ride," shares a reviewer at Airport Park.

Educational opportunities: The area offers historical sites worth exploring. "Mother Neff has a lot to offer and is just about 30 miles from Waco. The cave is an amazing part of history and is definitely a must-see!" explains a visitor to Mother Neff State Park.

Swimming locations: Families should research swimming areas in advance. "You can not swim in the lake at the campground, however, if you go over the bridge from the campground your pass will get you in to the Day Use area when you can swim," advises a Midway camper.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choosing the right site can enhance your experience. "We started out in the second section of sites however the bathrooms were closed completely for construction so we moved to the first section," advises an RV camper at Airport Park.

Hookup locations: Pay attention to utility placement when setting up. "Sewer connection at rear of parking pad. Bring the looooong stinky slinky!" warns an Airport Park reviewer about their hookup configuration.

Leveling requirements: Some sites require additional equipment for proper leveling. "Sites look level but we needed to reposition a couple times to get everything thing level and maximize the view," mentions a visitor at Speegleville Park.
