    Rocky Creek (Somerville Lake)

    We love COE’s but….

Normally all my CEOs get five stars, but the reason this one only gets four is the bathhouse was pretty dirty. Lots of bugs and spiders and just look like it hadn’t been cleaned for several days. Other than that big thumbs up to this park. Spaces are huge and the one we were in was very level. Probably at least 30 to 40 feet between your neighbors. We got a spot that was overlooking the lake so had a great view. That was spot 60. When we pulled in the thirty amp electric was not working, but the staff at the park was Johnny on the spot and got it fixed shortly. Another big bonus was the hiking trails around this park were fabulous. Saw lots of deer and also was able to walk along the shoreline of the lake for quite a ways. Could easily kayak for miles.

    Colinas RV Park

CHEAP, ALL UTILS INCLUDED, SUPER BIG SITES

Colinas RV Park is a pretty simple place, nothing fancy, but it’s clean and quiet and the sites are very large.

The owners keep it up well. What I like most is that the sites are big with a lot of shade trees, which makes it comfortable in the summer. They’ve got free Wi-Fi that works surprisingly well and a laundry room on-site, which is convenient.

Right now they’re running a special at$500 a month with all bills included, guaranteed for a year, which is hard to beat in this area. It’s not a resort, but it’s a good spot if you’re working around Elgin, Taylor, or even commuting into Austin. Close to HEB and Walmart, and the BBQ nearby is some of the best in Texas.

    Sherwood Forest Faire Campground

    good

Campground reviews? Well, those can be a real mixed bag! Ever tried navigating a website that promises serenity but delivers screaming kids and a questionable outhouse? I remember trying to book a campsite once, promised a breathtaking lake view. Ended up staring at a concrete wall while balancing on uneven ground. It felt like I was playing a real-life Slope Game of campsite roulette.

    Buescher State Park Campground

    Nightmare camping!!!

Do NOT camp here if you want peace and quiet!! after 3 diffrent attempts to enjoy quiet peaceful camping trips here I can confirm quiet hours are NOT inforced and even worse all three times I've stayed here I've had someone intrude onto my campsite to either try and peak into my tent, or use my picnic table or grill when there are plenty of others unused????

doesn't help that front staff are rude every time ive been too. never had these problems at other state parks. guess Beaushner is the party park!

Guide to Elgin

Camping options near Elgin, TX include state parks, county-operated facilities, and RV parks within a 20-30 mile radius. The Colorado River flows south of Elgin, creating recreational opportunities at several campgrounds. Summer temperatures frequently reach 95-100°F, making spring and fall the most comfortable camping seasons with daytime temperatures ranging from 65-85°F.

What to do

River recreation: Lake Bastrop North Shore Park offers multiple water activities during warm months. "We enjoy going for the day to this park it has a huge lake for our canoe and lots of room for he kids to run around. We enjoy the fishing off of the many piers they have," notes Jonathan K.

Historic exploration: Bastrop State Park Campground features several historical attractions and structures. "There are a few different camping areas, one is pretty close to the highway so it might not be the most quiet choice. Sites were wooded and shady, expect bugs," advises Kim B. The park also showcases forest recovery following wildfires.

Swimming: River Forest Haven provides river access for cooling off during hot weather. "We really enjoyed tubing and fishing, but the campfires were the best. The staff will deliver a generous amount of dry fire wood for $15," shares Lisa E.

What campers like

Post-fire recovery: Bastrop State Park Campground shows regrowth from previous wildfires. "We went after the 2nd fire & was able to see the affected trees from the 1st fire that affected Bastrop. Bathrooms were super nice & clean. Tons of hiking/running trails," explains Hayley A.

Campsite privacy: Most campers note the spacing between sites at several area campgrounds. At McKinney Falls State Park, a camper observed, "Sites were plenty big with electric and running water. The great part is the swimming. The water was warm, and it was perfect for new swimmers with floaties and advanced swimmers."

Modern facilities: Lake Bastrop North Shore Park provides updated amenities. "This campground has undergone a number of updates to their facilities so the cabins, bathrooms, picnic area, boat dock and other areas look great," according to Troy W.

What you should know

Seasonal closures: Some facilities limit operations during winter months or have reduced staffing. At River Forest Haven, "There was tubing in the River available but not open when we were there. Seems like it would be a nice family spot in the warmer weather," notes Taylor.

Terrain variations: McKinney Falls State Park features unique geography. "There's an extinct volcano nearby called Pilot Knob. That accounts for the flat rock near the main falls. They are working on restoring the visitor center from after the floods," explains Emily M.

Water safety: Some swimming areas require caution. "Please be careful swimming. If you can't swim, please refrain or wear a life jacket. There have been several drownings here," warns a McKinney Falls visitor.

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds fill quickly during peak seasons. At Austin East KOA, "Easy last minute booking which was nice because we couldn't find many other camping spots nearby for this price," reports a camper.

Tips for camping with families

Water activities: Multiple campgrounds offer swimming for children of various ages. "The water was warm, and it was perfect for new swimmers with floaties and advanced swimmers. There's a place where you can jump off the rocks into the water," shares a visitor to McKinney Falls.

Educational opportunities: Oak Forest RV Park provides access to both nature and cultural sites. "Great location. Has Tiny houses mixed in with RVs. Lots of trees and shade. Great people. We really enjoyed this park," writes Shelly P.

Kid-friendly facilities: Several parks offer specific amenities for children. "They have a children's playground and a nice swimming pool. The trees here are being replanted and restored," notes a Bastrop State Park visitor.

Tips from RVers

Proximity to urban amenities: Pecan Grove RV Park offers unusual city access. "This location absolutely can't be beat if you want to check out downtown Austin. We went on bike rides and runs right from the site and we could easily hop on a scooter and check out so many popular Austin spots," reports Bounding Around.

Site selection: Choose carefully based on shade needs during hot months. "We spent a couple of nights at this park. We loved the water falls and the sites are far apart with trees and shrubs surrounding them," notes a McKinney Falls visitor.

Weather considerations: The Austin area experiences extreme summer heat. "Camped here two nights. The facilities are amazing. Visited during the middle of summer, so it was very hot, sunny, and dry. Bring sun screen and plenty of water!" advises Danielle R.
