Sellersville sits within the rolling hills of Bucks County, Pennsylvania at an elevation of 486 feet above sea level. The area experiences four distinct seasons with winter temperatures typically reaching 20°F and summer highs averaging 85°F. Many campgrounds in this region are nestled among deciduous forests, creating vibrant fall foliage displays from mid-October through early November when overnight temperatures drop to around 40°F.
What to do
Disc golf adventures: At Boulder Woods Campground, campers can enjoy a challenging disc golf course integrated into the natural landscape. "They do allow golf carts we saw gas and powered. Nice and quite. We had a great time and it's on our list as a successful tent camping location for us. The owners are AWESOME!" writes Karralee B. The course attracts tournaments throughout the season, with discs available at the camp store.
Rock music-making: Visit Ringing Rocks Family Campground for easy access to the unique natural phenomenon at nearby Ringing Rocks County Park. "We went on Halloween weekend and they had so much for the kids to do! Friendly staff and clean sites!" notes Shannon C. Bring a hammer to tap the boulders and hear their metallic ringing sound—a rare geological formation that makes music when struck.
Fishing expeditions: Multiple stocked lakes dot the region, offering various fishing opportunities. "The campground itself is average, seems a little outdated but overall in good condition. I personally didn't use the bathhouse so I cannot comment. Price for full hookup campsites are very reasonable," says Harry L. about Tohickon Family Campground. For more dedicated fishing, check out the 10-acre fishing pond at Quakerwoods Campground.
What campers like
Secluded tent sites: Many campers appreciate the privacy offered by tent-specific areas. "As a tent camper, I was impressed by how Quakerwoods segregates mi tent pitchin' bredren from the rest of the folks who bring their homes with them on wheels, placing tent sites across the other side of a small creek on the southwestern periphery near the fishing pond," notes Stuart K. This separation creates a more traditional camping experience away from RVs.
Family-friendly activities: Colonial Woods Family Resort stands out for its organized events. "The campground is in the mountains of PA close enough to the Delaware River that we took a trip down using bucks County river tub company. We didn't have to go tubing because there was so much to do," says Nicole S. She adds, "They did a few activities the one we did go to was the casino night where they had separate play areas for kids and adults. All the money made is donated to Shriners Children's Hospital."
Clean, modern facilities: Bathroom and shower quality varies across campgrounds. "Bathrooms were very nice and clean with large showers. Nice area to wash dishes. Very nice playground area and clean," reports Jen R. about French Creek State Park Campground.
What you should know
Campsite surfaces vary widely: Many campgrounds in the area have gravel or stone sites rather than dirt or grass. "It was a little to close to each other and not enough privacy, and unfortunately we also had issues with the noise unless it was just the week we went," notes Jonathan R. about some cramped sites.
Weather considerations: Spring camping can be muddy in this region. "We had a great Halloween weekend but we were down by creek so it was very muddy. Everything else about this campground was great!" explains Shannon C. Sites near water features are particularly prone to becoming waterlogged after rain.
Reservation requirements: During peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), securing spots in advance is essential. "I would say bring your kids bikes... it's a nice relaxing, wooded area. loved it and everyone was so nice.... definitely gonna go back!" recommends Melissa S., highlighting the popularity of Lake Towhee County Park for family outings.
Tips for camping with families
Playground proximity: Request sites near play areas if traveling with young children. "They have a playground, lake where you could fish, cornhole, and minigolf. They did a few activities the one we did go to was the casino night where they had separate play areas for kids and adults," explains Nicole S. about Colonial Woods Family Resort.
Splash zones for hot days: Several campgrounds offer water features for cooling off. "The pooL and splash pool for toddlers was clean with a lifeguard on duty at all times," notes Nicole S. These supervised water areas provide safe recreation during hot summer months.
Organized activities: Look for campgrounds with scheduled events. "We were able to shower with my infant daughter and had no issues with trying to maneuver around while holding her. There is a very nice playground situated conveniently between the loops of the campground. It had some slides, a bridge, lots of monkey bars, ladders to climb on and the best feature was the zip line," reports Jen R. about French Creek State Park.
Tips from RVers
Site selection considerations: RVers should research site dimensions carefully. "If you have a large camper or 5th wheel you may need to double check what sites can accommodate your RV to ensure you have enough room. It was nice to just be able to back up our camper and have it mostly level already," advises Jen R.
Navigational challenges: Some campgrounds have narrow access roads. "Ok so let me start off by saying. If we still had our smaller travel trailer this review would've been at least 4 stars. However this place is not the place for you if you have a fifth wheel. The roads are very narrow, pretty sizable boulders on both sides, trees are very low and need to be trimmed (almost took my ac out with a huge limb)," cautions Brian C.
Full hookup availability: Not all campgrounds offer complete hookups. "The tent spots are pretty much on top of each other, not much privacy. It's next to a farm so the sunrise is pretty nice. The deliver firewood to your site, and the staff is friendly," shares Addam C. about Quakerwoods Campground, highlighting the additional services that compensate for cramped conditions.
