Schnecksville sits in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley region, with many campgrounds nestled in the rolling hills that range from 400 to 900 feet in elevation. The area features a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons, making late spring through early fall the prime camping period when temperatures average 70-85°F during summer days. Several campgrounds offer glamping accommodations beyond those mentioned in other resources.
What to do
Hiking Appalachian Trail sections: From Hickory Run State Park Campground, access multiple trail systems with varying difficulties. "There is a huge frisbee golf course. The inner loops have nice bathrooms. We were in the outer loop far from the rest of the campground and they only had ports potties and hand sanitizer," notes Sarah L., who recommends the waterfall hike.
Fishing in stocked waters: The lakes at Mauch Chunk Lake Park offer clear, clean water for fishing and other water activities. "You can get sites right on the water that are nice size. If you go during the week, it's quite calm. You are in beautiful Jim Thorpe that has white water rafting in town," says Lisa S., who enjoys launching her paddleboard directly from her site.
Visit historic districts: Jim Thorpe's historic district is accessible from several campgrounds and features distinctive 19th-century architecture. "We spent Saturday afternoon fishing but not catching anything at Scott's Run. It's a beautiful location and it was still a fun way to spend the day with the kids away from the site," shares Ellen C. about day trips from French Creek State Park.
What campers like
Spacious sites with privacy: Blue Rocks Family Campground offers sites that provide substantial space between neighbors. "Our campsite had a great view of the glacier rock field and the corn field. Upon arrival we realized that our camper was not going to fit on the site we reserved. The office was very easy to work with and we easily traded sites," explains Jen R.
Clean, modern facilities: Campers appreciate well-maintained shower houses and bathrooms. "This campground is cozy, friendly, and has a sweet sounding creek that you camp near. It has many kid friendly amenities as well as being very relaxing. Restaurants and stores less than 10 min away," notes Becky M. about Allentown KOA.
Boulder fields exploration: The unique geological features attract many visitors. "Blue rocks is the best family campground within 5 hours of philadelphia. Hands down. They have everything you need from primitive sites to cabins to rent," says Nick M., who especially enjoys the distinctive rock formations that give the campground its name.
What you should know
Site selection matters: Consider specific needs when booking. "Very small campground. Can be tight getting around with a bigger camper if not experienced. 2 different playgrounds and a pool that could use some updating. Staff was very helpful and accommodating," warns Brandon W. about Allentown KOA.
Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds operate from April through October. "The tent spots are pretty much on top of each other, not much privacy. It's next to a farm so the sunrise is pretty nice. They deliver firewood to your site, and the staff is friendly," explains Addam C. about Quakerwoods Campground.
Pet policies vary: Not all glamping close to Schnecksville, Pennsylvania allows pets. "Pets are NOT allowed," Blythe A. warns about Mauch Chunk Lake Park, contradicting some listings. Check pet rules before booking, as many luxury glamping options restrict pets to protect furnishings.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Jim Thorpe Camping Resort offers multiple play areas. "Very family friendly and the staff are so nice. Very nice grounds and a lot to do for families. Highly Recommend this location!!" shares Jared M. about the facilities available for children.
Water activities for kids: Several sites offer swimming and water recreation. "Loved being right next to the stream. No fish in sight though. Sites were huge! Hiking trail was about a mile up and back but cool. Lots of pull through sites. Bathrooms very clean and stocked with stuff you might need," Kelly J. reports about Allentown KOA.
Boulder climbing adventures: Children particularly enjoy the unique rock formations. "Our children loved to climb all over the rocks, that is where they spent most of the time. Primitive but fun!" shares Terri S. about Blue Rocks, highlighting a natural play feature kids can explore for hours.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: Stonybrook RV Resort offers level sites, which many appreciate. "The site was nice and level side to side. Their pool looked very nice although we did not use it. Same with their patio set up around the store," Jonathan F. notes, appreciating not having to struggle with leveling equipment.
Full hookup availability: Many glamping spots near Schnecksville offer complete services. "We spent four nights at Stonybrook RV Resort for a quiet wedding anniversary getaway. We paid $150 per night total for a FHU 50 Amp Premium Back-in site (#F20)," shares Matt S., who found the concrete pad and amenities worth the price.
Access considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging entrances. "Just one thing—the entrance made for a challenging entry up a steep grade, narrow roadway, and sharp turn in. I made it without problems, but it wasn't easy in a 45' motorhome towing a Jeep," warns Matt S. about navigating larger rigs into certain facilities.
