What to do
Creek exploration: French Creek State Park Campground offers extensive water recreation beyond standard camping. "There are two lakes, Scotts Run Lake and Hopewell Lake that you can fish, kayak, canoe or just relax by. There are several warm water fish in the lakes including northern pike, chain pickerel, bass, walleye, muskellunge and several types of panfish," notes one visitor.
Boulder climbing: Blue Rocks Family Campground features a one-of-a-kind boulder field where campers can scramble over ancient rock formations. "Our children loved to climb all over the rocks, that is where they spent most of the time. Primitive but fun!" shares Terri S., highlighting this distinctive geological feature.
Frisbee golf: Hickory Run State Park Campground maintains a challenging disc golf course through wooded terrain. "This area is so beautiful. A ton to explore and a huge frisbee golf course," reports Sarah L., adding that the course provides a free activity for campers of all skill levels.
What campers like
Diverse accommodation options: Multiple campgrounds offer alternatives to traditional tenting. "We have stayed in the yurts for annual glamping trip. We reserved 3 of 4 yurts for first weekend in June...non peak season. Yurts have 2 sets of bunk beds with one set having full size mattress on bottom," explains Mandy F. about Tuscarora State Park Campground.
Spacious, level sites: Campers consistently mention the well-designed camping areas. "All sites have a paved level area which made set up a breeze. Sites were not on top of each other. Bathrooms were very nice and clean with large showers," reports Jen R. about French Creek State Park Campground.
Dedicated pet areas: Dog owners appreciate designated pet-friendly camping zones. "French Creek State Park Campground is located in Elverson, Pennsylvania and sits adjacent to Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site. There are 200 individual sites in four loops, some with full hookups for RVs, some with electric only but mostly primitive sites...We stayed in Loop C, which is the only dog friendly loop in the campground," notes Ellen C.
What you should know
Seasonal operation differences: Most glamping options near Port Clinton operate on limited schedules. "Mountain Springs Camping Resort and Blue Rocks Family Campground operate from April through October," with specific opening dates varying by property.
Bathroom facilities vary widely: Quality and type of restrooms differ significantly between campgrounds. "Showers and bathrooms were great! If you're traveling through, there are many places to eat nearby...The honor system of payment at the office makes it really easy to come in late and leave early," shares Galit P. about winter camping at French Creek State Park Campground.
Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies by location and can be nonexistent in more remote areas. "I absolutely love camping here! If you want to be disconnected, literally because there is no cell service, then this is the place for you. Best of all it is free! You just have to get a pass from the office," explains Jen R. about primitive camping at Tuscarora.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Many campgrounds feature dedicated play areas for children. "There is a huge open field in the loop we camped in with a swing set on it. This was nice for families with children," notes one visitor to Hickory Run State Park Campground.
Kid-friendly water options: Jim Thorpe Camping Resort offers creek access for safe water play. "The mauch chunk stream runs through the back of the campground. The D&L trail also runs at the back of the campground, giving great bike access to mauch chunk lake," explains Jessica W.
Affordable family activities: On-site entertainment keeps costs down during family trips. "There is a playground, arcade, and office store. We mainly come out to use the outdoor shooting range nearby. There's plenty of places to check out in town," shares Melissa K. about Jim Thorpe Camping Resort.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: Stonybrook RV Resort offers well-designed spaces for larger rigs. "Nice campground, very very level site. But beyond the pool there wasn't much to do," explains Tori, highlighting the importance of finding properly graded sites.
RV site privacy: Campground layouts affect the camping experience significantly. "We had a large, fairly shaded, not too horribly out of level site. A lot of seasonal campers that were very nice people. Very nice camp store. There was just no wow factor," Jim C. notes about Mountain Springs Camping Resort.
Hook-up availability: Full service sites are limited at most campgrounds. "For this trip, my husband and I camped alongside our friends, which included three other couples and their children, so we took up two electric sites for the tent campers and two full hook up sites for our friends with RVs," shared Ellen C., indicating the need to book well in advance for premium RV sites.
