French Creek State Park offers access to over 35 miles of trails through Pennsylvania woodlands, with designated horse-friendly paths that connect to Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site. Located about 15 miles southeast of Reading in Chester and Berks counties, this 7,526-acre state park sits at elevations ranging from 600 to 850 feet. Equestrian trails are open year-round but can become muddy during spring thaws and after heavy rainfall.
What to do
Hiking and nature trails: French Creek State Park provides numerous family-friendly trails with varying difficulty levels. "We loved our stay at this park, and plan to return. We tented in loop D... There is lots of hiking, the lake is beautiful, at least two playgrounds (perfect for our kids), the bathrooms were well maintained," shares Katie M. from French Creek State Park Campground.
Fishing at multiple lakes: The park offers year-round fishing opportunities at Hopewell Lake and Scotts Run Lake. "There are two lakes, Scotts Run Lake and Hopewell Lake that you can fish at, kayak, canoe or just relax by. There are several warm water fish in the lakes including northern pike, chain pickerel, bass, walleye, muskellunge and several types of panfish," notes Jen R. in her review.
Horseback riding on designated trails: While there are no horse campgrounds near Port Clinton, Pennsylvania with overnight facilities, Starlite Camping Resort offers a central location to access nearby equestrian trails. "Starlite offers a wide variety of amenities... Staff was very friendly! Loved the cleanliness and atmosphere as well!" says Brie A., making it a potential base camp for day riders.
What campers like
Private, spacious sites: Many campgrounds in the Port Clinton area offer well-spaced sites. "All sites have a paved level area which made set up a breeze. Sites were not on top of each other. Bathrooms were very nice and clean with large showers," reports Jen R. about French Creek State Park.
Clean facilities: Hibernia County Park receives praise for its maintenance. "We loved the lake campground. My kids are age 3-12. There's running water available, porta potties are very clean and don't smell and are lit with a street lamp," reports Anna, highlighting the park's commitment to cleanliness.
Quiet, natural settings: The region offers peaceful camping experiences. "Quiet. Occasional planned activities. Rented pavilions for reunions, birthdays, seasonal gatherings, etc.," notes Erin S. about Hibernia County Park, which features hiking trails and fishing at Chambers Lake.
What you should know
Limited availability of horse camping facilities: While equestrian trails exist near Port Clinton, dedicated horse camping with corrals is scarce. When planning a trip to ride horses in this region, prepare for day use only or arrange overnight accommodations at nearby private facilities.
Seasonal considerations: Weather impacts camping conditions significantly. "We have been having a crazy amount of rain here in Pennsylvania so due to weather related issues we haven't been able to get out there until now," explains Jen R. about Tuscarora State Park Campground. Spring and fall can bring unexpected precipitation.
Variable cell service: Connectivity varies widely by location. "This is a great place to stay if you want to be disconnected, literally because there is no cell service," notes Jen R. about Tuscarora. At other parks, service may be available but unreliable.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Multiple parks offer recreational facilities for children. "The park's extensive trail system connects to Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, providing additional riding opportunities. Very nice playground area and clean," confirms Jen R. about French Creek State Park.
Kid-friendly fishing spots: Tuscarora State Park Campground provides accessible fishing opportunities. "I absolutely love camping here! If you want to be disconnected, literally because there is no cell service, then this is the place for you. We love going here because of the creek. You can fish, swim and just relax!" shares Jen R.
Alternate accommodations: For families seeking more comfort than tent camping, consider unique options. "My girlfriends and I just stayed in the yurts for annual glamping trip. Yurts have 2 sets of bunk beds with one set having full size mattress on bottom. Yurts have heat and fans. Full size refrigerator, stove and microwave," explains Mandy F. about Tuscarora State Park.
Tips from RVers
Leveling requirements: Be prepared for uneven terrain at some campgrounds. "Stayed here 2 nights without a reservation. We were in the D loop which is rustic with no hookups. Quiet, very few people mid-week. Spacious sites," reports Cheryl K. about French Creek State Park Campground.
Hook-up availability: Check specific campground amenities before arrival. "We had two electric sites for the tent campers and two full hook up sites for our friends with RVs. We stayed in Loop C, which is the only dog friendly loop in the campground," explains Ellen C., providing useful information about French Creek's facilities.
Access considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging approaches. "If you're hauling a big camper you'll need power for the hills," advises Chris G. about Starlite Camping Resort, noting the significant elevation changes that can challenge larger rigs.
