The region surrounding Atoka, Oklahoma encompasses diverse camping environments including state parks, developed campgrounds and dispersed options. McGee Creek State Park stands as a prominent destination with tent, RV, and cabin accommodations alongside water recreation opportunities. Boggy Depot State Park offers over 100 camping sites nestled under old oak trees with historical significance as a former Confederate outpost and Chickasaw and Choctaw depot. Blue River Camp provides a more primitive experience for those seeking a less developed setting. The area supports multiple camping styles from full hookup RV sites to secluded primitive spots. Atoka's campgrounds offer excellent options for both weekend campers and those planning extended stays in southeastern Oklahoma.

Campers should note that several sites require fishing licenses even if not fishing. Blue River Campground, for instance, requires Oklahoma fishing licenses for all campers regardless of fishing activity. Summer temperatures can rise significantly, making water access highly desirable during warmer months. Most developed campgrounds maintain year-round operation, though amenities may be limited during winter. Road conditions to some areas may require careful navigation, particularly after rain. Cell service varies considerably throughout the region. A visitor remarked of McGee Creek State Park: "Cannot say enough positives about this park. Absolutely beautiful. The hiking was gorgeous and amateur to moderate so I had no problem. The rocks, trees, trails are all beautiful."

Water access represents a significant draw for campers in the Atoka area. Lake of the Arbuckles, McGee Creek Reservoir, and Blue River provide fishing, swimming, and boating opportunities. Campgrounds with water views tend to fill quickly during peak seasons. Many campsites at McGee Creek State Park offer direct lake views and easy water access. The Blue River stands out as a unique natural feature, with one camper noting it is "the only natural aquifer left in Oklahoma." For those seeking quieter experiences, camping areas farther from lakes may offer more solitude. Historical sites add another dimension to camping in the region, particularly at Boggy Depot with its Civil War-era connections and cemetery. Bathhouse and shower facilities receive generally positive reviews at the more developed campgrounds.

      COE Hugo Lake Kiamichi Park

Kiamichi Park, Juniper Loop nice place

We camped at J 9 and 10 which are on the water. Concrete pads very level. Can walk down the hill from J9 to get to the shore. Shore is limestone, full of fossils. Very clean and mowed. Bath house is quite a way away from these sites but in good shape. The corp is working to bring the rest of the park back after they allowed another co. To run the park for a few years. (They did not upkeep the park very well.

      Whispering Woods of Texas

      Glamping it in Nature

We are not much into camping but love the outdoors.  We loved the Whispering Woods vibe as it gave us the comforts of home (bathroom, kitchen, shower, comfy bed) yet in an outdoor setting.  Lots of options to stay from a Boho tent, Airstream and other types of tents making it a perfect place for a family reunion or several families to stay.  We appreciated the details of coffee in our Airstream and sitting on the patio early morning listening to the birds chirping.  The air is fresher there and the stars, wow, I forgot how many there actually are.  Fire pit was great for conversation, relaxing and peaceful.  We highly recommend this place to get recharged and only 90 min from our home in Frisco, TX.

Cold Springs Campground — Chickasaw National Recreation Area

Would be very crowded in season

I'm the only camper here and it's february and it's perfect for me. I can't imagine what it must be during the high season. The campsites are close, not necessarily flat, not necessarily private. There's trash and picnic tables and a bathroom, but no showers. No electricity anywhere either. This is meant for tent campers or very small campers. Not much else could get in and get around the corners. Last it is the center of everything, so all that you want to see is close to it and pretty much within walking distance.

      Caney Creek

      Nice park

The campground host was very nice. Checked on me, made sure I had everything I needed. I happened to be here in the winter and because of a deep freeze coming. They just shut the water off to the park. There are two sides, the a side which is electric and the b side which is primitive. Both have great views of the lake and services.

      Boggy Depot State Park Campground

This place has a lot packed in to a small space

I would bet it is nuts in the summer if it was full but I am the only one here right now. They have a spot for everyone from tent to rv to full hookups and the price is very reasonable. See the videos for more.

      Clayton Lake State Park Campground

      Very sweet little park

Stopped by to see it. There are two camping areas. RV sites in area 2 are much better. Very nice but unless you fish, not much else to do but relax I suppose.

      Eisenhower State Park Campground

Nice park overall. Clean and secure.

I’ve been here several times over the last few years (latest oct 2025). I like the hiking trails and the amazing beauty of the outdoors. The lake is pretty and probably fun to fish or boat on. I didn’t do this while I was there. There is a small onsite store. The roads are maintained and paved and the campsites are very nice sized with long parking spots for campers. Some tent sites have power and some even have large screen shelters. The park is monitored by state police throughout the day and night and that is good to keep the trouble away.
