Camping near Pat Mayse Lake

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Pat Mayse Lake in northeastern Texas provides multiple Corps of Engineers (COE) managed campgrounds with a range of tent and RV accommodations. Sanders Cove Recreation Area and Pat Mayse West represent the primary developed camping options, both offering electric hookups, potable water, and toilets. The campgrounds feature waterfront sites, picnic tables, and fire rings, with spacious areas for both tent camping and RVs up to large sizes at certain locations.

The campgrounds remain open year-round with peak visitation occurring during summer months when fishing tournaments and water recreation are most popular. Most sites require advance reservations, particularly for weekend stays during warmer seasons. Water and electric hookups are available at most developed sites, though not all locations offer showers or sewer connections. Vault toilets are common at both Pat Mayse East and West campgrounds, while Sanders Cove provides shower facilities in certain areas. According to one visitor, "The sites run the spectrum from packed close together to being well spread out depending on the area and loop camped in. Most are well shaded sites, trees abound at the campground."

Campers consistently rate waterfront sites among the most desirable options at Pat Mayse Lake, with many reviewers highlighting the quality fishing opportunities and peaceful atmosphere. Sanders Cove receives particularly positive feedback for its boat ramps, swimming areas, and hiking trails. Shaded sites offer respite during hot summer months, though several visitors note that site leveling can be an issue at some locations. Several campgrounds feature separate loops with varying levels of amenities, allowing visitors to choose between more developed or more rustic camping experiences. Wildlife viewing, boating access, and stargazing are frequently mentioned as highlights of the camping experience. The surrounding forests provide natural boundaries between many sites, enhancing privacy for campers seeking a more secluded outdoor experience.

    Pine Creek Cove

    Nice campground with lake view

Camped here in mid-November, 2025. Paid $11 with my senior pass; payment was made online. Loop O was the only loop open during our stay. After dispersed and primitive camping for some days, I camped here primarily to replenish my water supply and power, and take a hot shower. The loop, which has 10 sites, all with lake views, was clean, well maintained and quiet. There was only one other site occupied during my stay. There was some road noise from vehicles crossing the nearby dam, but it wasn't bad. I liked how my site (#1) was on a paved patio-like pad, a little elevated, providing a nice view of the lake. The paved site was level, and had power and water - all in operation.  The site has a picnic table, metal fire ring, grill, fish cleaning table and lantern pole. Picnic tables at a few of the other sites were covered. I don't recall seeing tent pads on this loop. The vault toilet on this loop was clean and supplied. The shower house at the main campground entrance was open. It too was clean and supplied. The shower had hot water. Fishing and boating appeared to be the main activities at the time of my visit. There were no hiking trails, but walking around in the campground loops and day use area was nice. Not much shade here, so Starlink connectivity is possible. Had AT&T and T-Mobile data service. Even though I normally don't camp in established, full service campgrounds, I really enjoyed my stay here. Relaxing and peaceful.

Buggy Whip Equestrian Campground — Cooper Lake State Park South Sulphur Unit

    A horse lover's campground

We camped for 2 weeks in this campground, site 111, and with the exception of Labor Day weekend, we had the entire campground mostly to ourselves! Shady, large sites with electric and water. Large area in the middle of the campground with lovely trees and a few picnic tables. Nice equestrian/pedestrian trails. Clean and well-maintained restroom/shower facility as you come into this campground. The rangers made their rounds at least twice a day.

Bright Star Campground — Cooper Lake State Park South Sulphur Unit

Nice, very quiet, heavily wooded CG

We have a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site 25 for 1 night in early September. The CG is clean, well maintained. The CG roads are paved, as are the sites. The site pads themselves are concrete and most looked to be fairly level, but a few had a bit of slope. Most of the sites were fairly well spaced. The CG, at least on Sunday evening, was very quiet and peaceful. There were only 2 other campers while we were there, one of them the Park Host. Our site, 25, was a pull-through, but the center of it had about 4 inches of mud from a recent rain, otherwise it would just be 4 inches of dirt. A few of the back-in sites had similar situations at the junction with the road.

AT&T coverage was pitiful, with only 1 bar of LTE service and speeds up to 0.1 MB/s. We had a clear view to the N from the side of the site, so Starlink was fine with speeds up to 16 MB/s.

    Hidden Grove RV Resort

    Beautiful quiet oasis

You can tell this is a good place to stay as soon as you pull in the drive. Great roads, very large sites, your choice pull in paved or gravel, back in or lake side. All spots have a paved patio. The owners are so nice and make you feel at home. We stayed an extra night.

    Little River Park

    Beautiful and quiet

We had spot A15, full hookup with a 38ft 5th wheel for 1 night. There is a board when you pull in to tell whats available. Had the whole place to ourselves. The camphost was awesome. We pulled in around 10pm and he came out to greet us, super nice gentlemen. Highly recommend

    Lane RV Park

    Very clean and maintained!!

Lane RV is a very clean and quiet RV and Tiny Home Park.  Conveniently located between McGee Creek State Park and Reba’s in Downtown Atoka!  McGee Creek is a beautiful state park with boating, fishing, hiking, etc.  Downtown Atoka is an up and coming little town that has been revitalized by Reba McEntire’s restaurant and bar.  It’s a great getaway, come check it out!!

    Lost Rapids!

We found this on a whim but were pleasantly surprised. Great little campground. Picnic tables and fire rings are dated at best but functional. The view was phenomenal!

Acorn Campground — Beavers Bend State Park

    Riverside heaven

Really enjoyed the Acorn campground - south end of park. There are many to choose from in this large state park, but I would return here. Site was level with the usual amenities all in working order and not too close to neighbors. The river ran directly behind the site and I was entertained by an otter family and ducks daily. There is a water release siren that sounds occasionally and it is loud, but it doesn't happen frequently, or at night, at least not during my stay.

Enjoyed the hiking in this park. Lots of great cleared trails. Often times I was the only hiker. A real gem is the COE access road that runs along the river past the spillway. If you walk far enough down you can view the real "wild" river with the islands of cypress trees and boulders creating eddies and the relaxing sounds of the river spilling over and around. 10 out of 10 stars

No Verizon service except at the nature center (definitely worth a visit especially if you have kiddos, and the ranger here is fantastic!!). You can jump on their wifi, or if I walked to the pavilion behind the store I could get one bar on my phone. Note off season store hours in photo. Not much in the store. The BBQ at the Lookout restaurant is the draw.

Guide to Pat Mayse Lake

Pat Mayse Lake camping features a network of Corps of Engineers managed recreation areas across 5,993 acres of water surface with 62 miles of shoreline in northeast Texas. Located about 12 miles north of Paris, Texas, the lake serves as both a flood control project and recreational destination. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, typically rising in spring and decreasing during summer drought periods, affecting campsite accessibility during extreme conditions.

What to do

Kayaking access points: At Pat Mayse Sanders Cove Recreations area, kayakers enjoy calm waters with minimal boat traffic. "This lake doesn't have a marina so there is not too much boat traffic. There are boat ramps and docks. I plan on taking my kayak next time. It looks great for kayaking," notes Melanie W.

Geocaching adventures: Sanders Cove offers family-friendly geocaching opportunities within walking distance of campsites. "Boating, grilling, yard games, geocaching and more!" reports Natalie S., highlighting the variety of land-based activities available.

Hiking trails: Several short trail networks connect camping areas to lakeshores. "The hiking trails are great!" says Angela H. about Sanders Cove, where maintained paths provide access to wooded areas and lake views without requiring significant hiking experience.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Pat Mayse West offers generous spacing between camping areas. "This is a large campground, lots of room between sites! Good place to go for a family camping spot! Shade and level sites!" reports Tammie L., highlighting the extra space not found at all campgrounds.

Secluded atmosphere: The lake's multiple camping areas provide options for those seeking quiet. "Very secluded and quiet when we visited in early August," notes Elizabeth B. about Pat Mayse West, emphasizing the peaceful environment during weekday stays.

Wildlife viewing: Morning and evening hours bring deer, birds, and small mammals to lakeshores. "We loved our short stop over here. The bathrooms were nice, you have a choice of campground space with the three loops, nicely spaced spots and the lake. It even has a short trail if you hike!" shares Tom K. about Sanders Cove.

What you should know

Vault toilet locations: Not all camping areas offer full shower facilities. "Loop A does not have a shower but the main restroom and shower is within walking distance," explains Melanie W. about Sanders Cove, providing important logistics information for tent campers.

Site leveling challenges: Bring leveling blocks for RV camping at certain areas. "The spot was unleveled but that's no big deal if you have leveling blocks," advises Elizabeth B. about her experience at Pat Mayse West.

Water access variability: Pat Mayse West Campground has inconsistent water spigot placement. "Water access is sometimes very far from the campsite and sometimes right on each site there is no consistency, so an extra hose is advisable," warns B H., suggesting campers bring extension hoses.

Discount availability: Active military and veterans qualify for reduced camping rates. "The lady at the desk was so helpful and informed us about discounts my husband was missing because of his service (National Guard Vet) which has been so greatly appreciated!" shares Elizabeth B.

Tips for camping with families

Group camping options: COE Pat Mayse Lake Pat Mayse Park East provides dedicated group areas ideal for multi-family trips. "B loop has a nice group camp section that is set back just off the main B loop, which would be great for families," recommends Gari-Ann L.

Beach access: Sanders Cove features a designated swimming area with gradual entry points suitable for children. "Our family had such an amazing time tent camping on the water!" reports Kristen S., highlighting the lake access benefits.

Playground proximity: Select campsites near playground facilities for convenient child entertainment. "The Camp host Kathie has put so much appreciated work into improving this place! Looks great!!" notes Kristie H. about Pat Mayse East's recreational facilities.

Tips from RVers

Extra-long sites: West Lake Crockett provides sites suitable for maintaining trailer hookups. "We were in spot J14, it is long enough to stay hooked up to our 34' TT. Level concrete pads, electric and water with water views," shares Jim B.

Electrical capacity: For larger RVs requiring substantial power, check amperage availability before booking. "This is an awesome lake, the campground would score 5 stars but they don't have full hookup's!" notes Tammie L. about Pat Mayse West.

Solar options: Several lakeshore sites receive adequate sunlight for solar power systems. "We kept the solar batteries fully charged all week. Sites on the outer side have great hammock trees," reports Izzy T., noting the solar potential for self-contained units.
