Best Equestrian Camping near Atoka, OK

Platter Flats Campground near Lake Texoma offers specialized equestrian camping with 35 equestrian sites with hookups and 3 equestrian tent sites without hookups. The campground features water and electric connections at most equestrian sites, picnic tables, and fire rings. The equestrian area provides ample shade from mature trees, making it comfortable for both horses and campers during hot weather. Facilities include both flush and pit toilets, with newer shower facilities recently added to the equestrian section. The campground operates on a reservation-only basis through Recreation.gov. Well-maintained grounds offer rolling hills and lake views with spectacular sunsets visible from many campsites. Traffic can become heavy during weekends, creating dusty conditions on the dirt and gravel roads throughout the equestrian area.

A well-marked equestrian trail connects Platter Flats to Lakeside Park across the lake, offering multiple secluded spots for swimming along the route. The trail system is suitable for both horseback riding and hiking, with large map signs at trail endpoints and clear markers throughout. Campground gates close at 10 PM, though the adjacent Platter Flats Recreation Area remains open with no closing time, allowing extended access. Trailer parking is spacious enough for large rigs. The campground operates seasonally from April 1 through September 30. Horse owners particularly enjoy the rolling terrain and mature tree coverage in the equestrian camping section. While weekend traffic can be considerable, weekday visits typically offer a more peaceful experience for riders seeking quieter trail conditions.

    COE Lake Texoma Platter Flats

Weekend traffic but the hosts are great.

The park hosts and volunteers are very friendly, responsive, and work hard with the resources available to them. They deserve 5 stars This 2 star review is on the park only.

This campground is one part regular campground, one part equestrian campground. Having horses is not a requirement to camp in the equestrian area and that is hany when the "regular" area is filled. The sites are pretty close together and the entire park feels packed together when it comes to camping space.

The facilities are extremely outdated but there are new bath/shower combos coming online very shortly in the equestrian section. In the meantime there are 2 shower stalls available for men and 2 for women in the entire camp. There are pit toilets in the equestrian area and only 1 flush toilet for men located in the "regular" area until the new ones come up in the equestrian area. Possibly only 2 for women available.

The worst thing was the traffic. People would drive to swim, fish, use the restroom, visit others in adjacent campsites or just cruise around with no aim from 8 AM to 10PM Thursday thru Sunday afternoon. The outer gates close at 10 PM but some drove around inside the park after that anyway. The equestrian camp area has dirt/gravel road and all the traffic creates a dusty environment. The Main road to the entrance which runs along the south side of the equestrian area also leads to the Platter Flats Recreation area which has no gates nor closing time so there is activity on the road all day and night.

There is a long equestrian trail that goes over to Lakeside Park across the lake that can also be hiked pretty easily that has a couple secluded spots to swim along the way. The trail is well marked and easy to follow. There are large map signs on each end of the trail and markers along the way.

I would not recommend visiting this park on a weekend unless traffic doesn't bother you. It should be noted there is a rail freight line and siding not far from the camp and once the vehicle traffic slows down, the trains seem to start. The train horns at crossings may be a bother to some.

    Platter Flats

    Love! So fun for kids!

Half of the campground is an equestrian camp. There are great hiking trails and beautiful views. Good shady spots.

We had two kids with us and we loved walking around the campground and seeing all the horses! But remember it will also smell like them so camp on that side at your own risk.

Also there was no attendant and we switched sites for the weekend with no issue 🤷‍♀️🤫

    Coffee Mill Lake Recreation Area

Grasslands lake camping in North Texas.

We stayed here by happenstance. This campground isn't really near anything and is a 30 minute drive from even the smallest town so come prepared for all your needs. There is a vault toilet and the grounds weren't in terrible shape. This would be my choice for a campground in the National Grasslands. There is lake access here and you could tell that this is a equestrian meet up area. The camps pots weren't leveled and you just throw your tent wherever you want. We didn't have any neighbors so it was quiet. The spot we got had a fire ring and a table. This is basic no frills car camping here if you are interested. We didn't have time to research so we don't know if there are any trails or anything in this area as we couldn't find any.

    COE Hugo Lake Kiamichi Park

    Had a blast

Every so often my family and I will venture into Oklahoma to do some camping and hiking. About 5 years ago we came to Kiamichi Park and enjoyed our time there. There is a lot of grass area which was nice because we love to play KOOB and throw the freesbie for our dog. There is also a lake nearby called Hugo Lake which was amazing because we went to the lake to cool off, and our dog enjoyed swimming. People were fishing in the lake as well, and kayaking too. The kayaking looked like a blast. We looked for places nearby to rent, but couldnt find any. If you have your own I would recommend bringing one because the lake is gorgeous. We also enjoyed biking on the trail, running, and hiking. There is a boat ramp next to the lake as well. We also saw people horseback riding on the trails. There honestly was so much stuff do it! We loved it and stayed super busy.

    Coffee Mill Lake Recreation Area

    Coffee Mill Lake

I am always pleasantly surprised with 'national' organizations' campgrounds. Whether a national forest or like this one, national grasslands, they are always pretty good, and this one is no exception. The campground is small, maybe 12 sites, vault toilets decently cleaned, and multiple water spigots. There was only one other camper, but there is access to the lake at this site with a few cars in the parking lot when we arrived, so you will see people even though it is secluded on the whole. We also saw a lot of horse riders. The sites have picnic tables, fire pits and are well spaced. You basically have your pick of sites so you can choose wooded areas or open without trees.

    Coffee Mill Lake Recreation Area

    Nice Lake Front Campground

This is a nice campground on the shore of a small man made lake. The lake has a boat ramp and fishing pier. Some of the sites need minor repairs and the some disgusting person made a mess of the men's pit toilet but the a crew cleaned it in the morning.  The campground has decent views of the stars especially looking north. The site I chose was close to the lake and relatively level.

Guide to Atoka

Platter Flats Campground on Lake Texoma features specialized camping areas with over 60 sites, including regular family campsites and a dedicated equestrian section. The campground operates seasonally from April through September, with all sites available by reservation only through Recreation.gov. Weekday visits typically offer a more peaceful environment than busy weekends, when significant traffic creates dusty conditions on the dirt and gravel roads.

What campers like

Peaceful weekday atmosphere: Weekdays offer significantly quieter conditions for both riders and non-riders seeking tranquility. "Platter Flats is usually quiet. It's been our favorite campsite for years because of this. We've always been able to find an open spot with a nice view," writes Jessica S.

Horse observation opportunities: Even visitors without horses enjoy the equestrian atmosphere. "We had two kids with us and we loved walking around the campground and seeing all the horses! But remember it will also smell like them so camp on that side at your own risk," advises Rachael H.

Lake views and sunsets: Multiple sites at Hugo Lake Kiamichi Park offer direct water views. "Level concrete pads, electric and water with water views," notes Jim B., highlighting the practical and scenic benefits of the campground.

What you should know

Campground layout: The equestrian section provides better shade coverage than other areas. "Great shade especially in the equestrian area. Well maintained. Wonderful lake views with amazing sunsets," reports N.I.

Traffic patterns: Coffee Mill Lake Recreation Area offers a quieter alternative to busier Lake Texoma campgrounds. "The Campground is secluded in The Grassland National Forest. Great bass fishing. Very Quiet," shares Janet J.

Activity planning: Families can combine horseback riding, swimming, and hiking in single outings. "Amazing and Great for trail riding," confirms N.I., with sites specifically designed for both equestrian and regular camping.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for horse trailers: Equestrian sites accommodate larger rigs with horse trailers. "Numerous sites to choose from, some pull thru, some back in. Water, tables, and fire pits at every site," reports Izzy T.

Hookup availability: Most equestrian sites include water and electrical connections. "Level concrete pads, electric and water with water views," confirms Jim B. about camping options.

Shade considerations: Position RVs strategically for maximum shade during summer months. "Heavily shaded. Not sure how effective solar charging would be during summer months," notes Izzy T. when discussing site conditions.
